What is wrong with looking mumsy?

Just that really.

What is mumsy? I associate mumsy with being comfortable. In which case I was mumsy long before I was a mum.

Border - chippy about people who have parents loving nearby?

LordPalmerston · 16/03/2014 13:05

living, even!

I do believe that we're all in agreement, a fleece is an item of clothing that should be reserved for sportswear, if you are climbing a mountain, or put it over running clothes when running in the snow, it's perfectly reasonable item of clothing. For all other times, there is a far more stylish alternatives for a similar price. I can sort of see the temptation if you own a fleece from running in the snow or hill climbing etc you might have a moment when you just put it on without thinking about it, but there are woman who have never climbed a mountain or gone jogging in the snow, yet for some unknown reason, decided to buy a fleece. Why?

What is the thinking behind spending good money on an item of clothing that makes you look bad every time you wear it when the same money would get you an alternative that doesn't?

Is a concious choice when you pick up the fleece that you've decided you aren't the sort of person who wants to be considered attractive anymore?

It seems people are using the word "mumsy" as a proxy for looking like you only have time for your kids and nothing else. I think if you look harried and spend 99% of your time fussing around kids and wiping mouths (which I fully appreciate you may have to) you're going to look like mumsy no matter what you wear. It's more about your daily life than your clothes.

Bunbaker · 16/03/2014 13:40

"but there are woman who have never climbed a mountain or gone jogging in the snow, yet for some unknown reason, decided to buy a fleece. Why?"

Because a) Something that is stylish and practical is often difficult to find and b) Not everyone is as bothered as you are about the way they look.

GhettoFabulous · 16/03/2014 13:41

I'm mystified by "sexless" being a bad thing in a work environment. I do community work and want to look smart but approachable.

noddyholder · 16/03/2014 13:46

I have never owned a fleece ever I don't see them around much Dp has one and its not that bad Shock

LordPalmerston · 16/03/2014 13:53

i have one
plain black slim berghaus one
wear for watching sport

Its ancient now

noddyholder · 16/03/2014 13:55

Thats what dp has dark green its quite nice slim thing with high neck. I am assuming the fleeces referred to here are the big furry things

sassytheFIRST · 16/03/2014 13:58

I have a couple for camping. Also wear in the evening with pj bottoms after an early shower. They are warm, comfy and I look like shit in them.

monicalewinski · 16/03/2014 14:03

LordPalmerston, that's the exact fleece I have- bought years ago and was a zip in/out part of the jacket.

I sometimes wear it if it's a bit nippy and I'm just nipping out, or to watch the kids playing rugby/football.

I'm as mumsy as all the other practically dressed mums & dads on those occasions and funnily enough, couldn't give a toss!

LordPalmerston · 16/03/2014 14:03

you mean SHIT HOT sassoid
One of the things I like about getting older is having the right clothes for the job
walk in a hill - boots
Watching rugby - warm raincoat
etc

its so CONVENIENT

LordPalmerston · 16/03/2014 14:04

oh no. mine is a half zip
like a jumper

LimeLelloLizard · 16/03/2014 14:14

Funny thread.

I think I'll stick to my skinnies / flats for now. OK I might be misjudged and pitied by a few fashion savvy as being a SAHM who has lost her identity in motherhood, or barely noticed by all the normal people in the world as someone who doesn't (and never did) have much interest in fashion.

But better that than look as if I've tried REALLY hard and still look ridiculous.

monicalewinski · 16/03/2014 14:26

Perhaps it is just the full zip that is mumsy then!

LordPalmerston · 16/03/2014 14:44

its the texture and the forgiving nature Grin

Newpencilcase · 16/03/2014 15:42

I'm still at a loss as to how anyone survives walking their children to school throughout the year without a parka.

The leggings & dress thing is mumsy, I admit but I don't think it is a bad look. It stems, I think, from dresses being nice to wear and not such an issue with post birth stomach. The leggings make it practical when constantly picking things up & crawling around after children.

Therefore, as a look, I think it is the 'making an effort' version of a track suit.

Yes, everyone could get their arse to the gym & crunch themselves to death, or make an effort to look presentable despite not having time or money.

So yes it's mumsy, but in a good way.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 16/03/2014 15:57

Parkas are yuck!Easy to survive without.Wool is fine.

I don't think dresses over leggings is mumsy though.Nor is it a look that has been seen 'before' or on older women. It depends what dress you are wearing though and the fit, admittedly. The look is also nothing to do with post baby belly (!!!) or practicality of parenthood.

The point of it was (and still is for most) dresses are pretty but often look overdressed and can be too cold.Leggings dress them down making them wearable and warm the legs.

LordPalmerston · 16/03/2014 16:03

they never make anyone look nice
just a black legged lump of poyester

noddyholder · 16/03/2014 16:04

dresses and leggings? Whats wrong with tights.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 16/03/2014 16:13

Tights are better but not if the dress is short (depends on what you believe/feel as a person though I guess when it comes to dress length).

Dress and leggings can and does look nice on women because, believe it or not,it's no different than wearing a dress with really thick tights-you just have the foot bit missing.

Bunbaker · 16/03/2014 16:16

"Parkas are yuck!Easy to survive without.Wool is fine."

This is just silly. Practicality wins over impractical fashion every time for me. Doesn't it ever rain where you live?

noddyholder · 16/03/2014 16:18

I love my parka!

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 16/03/2014 16:18

See, I have never been able to wear dresses with leggings.

I find that a floral or summer dress with opaque tights looks wrong too.

Am walking around in bare legs today by the way. Anyone else? Are bare legs in March mumsy?

Do you ever see sheep soaked to their skin?.....
