Style advice - putting together a look

I've recently read a kindle book by Wendy Mak where she has thirty pieces of clothing and makes over 1000 outfits.

She talks a lot about items that are light and dark. One part of the outfit has to be light or dark. eg dark blazer and jeans light top, light skirt dark top and shoes. Does that make sense and are there any other guidelines to follow?

I'm trying to put together a uniform and failing miserably :( How did I get to be 50 and not know these things?

erm, fitted and loose?
eg loose top with skinnies
fitted top with wide legs?

I recently went on a House of Colour colour analysis day, then a style day. You can't do the style day unless you've done the colour day.

The style day has helped me so much. I used to absolutely dread clothes, shopping, style, etc., and since my style day (last week) I've actually managed to feel positive about it.

I don't think you have to have one thing light with one thing dark, tbh. I think it's more useful to have a wardrobe that contains colours which will all work together. If you have 4 tops and 4 bottoms which can all go with each other, then you have 16 outfits. If you also had 4 accessory items, then you could call that '64 outfits'.

If she has 10 tops, 10 bottoms and 10 pairs of shoes, then she has '1000 outfits'.
