new mum to be - help with babygrows to choose

Hi all
I'm a first time mum to be and seen many lovely babgrows and sleepsuits. Can I ask all for advice on the best type to buy:

with or without feet or turn over cuffs?
snap fastners down the front or sides?
best material
would you bother buying organic cotton?

I'd love some help as I've never even dressed a newborn so want some advice re easiest to put on/take off as I'm sure I'll be doing a lot of nappy changing. Thanks in advance x

With feet, with built in scratch mitts, organic not really worth the hype IMHO. Studs down the center - and never anything that fastens up the back for a small baby!

Next ones are the best for newborns in my opinion. Softest fabric, built in mitts and sizing is great. They are pricy, but I've just washed, dried and ironed all mine for no 2 and they look as good as new. Worth the investment.

Agree Next have the best sleep suits. Integrated scratch mitts can be used or not (to stop scratching face by accident).

I preferred poppers down front. I had one with side poppers and was always harder to get the arm and leg in on the opposite side to the poppers.

In winter I also used bodysuits underneath sleep suits and just bodysuit or nappy in summer.

Third one for Next! Just be careful if you tumble dry, they can be known to shrink! But they're soft, and perfect for newborns

Sainsburys and Morrisons are good if you're on a budget and they come in some lovely colours and patterns. They don't wear fantastically well but they grow out of them so quickly it doesn't really matter! If you want to spend a bit more Boots do some nice ones (although some have the poppers up the side which is a bit of a pain) or the ones from Mamas and Papas are lovely - look out for them when they're on sale!

I never used scratch mitts as my midwife said the baby should have their hands free to self comfort (as they touch their face \stick thumb in the womb). so I found the built in type annoying as it meant they took longer to dry.

tiny babies the ones with feet are best, when they get older ones with out feet can be nice.

Don't buy the ones that pull over their head and just pop at the crotch. If their nappy leaks you'll pull poo all through their hair when you take it off

Make sure they have pops on both legs. The ones that have poppers down just one leg are hard work. Definitely with feet.

I agree that the next ones are lovely. They are so much softer than any of my others. The fold over scratch mits are best as you can use them if you want but they don't exactly get in the way if you don't. Feet definitely for tiny babies as well. Their little toes feel so cold & no chance of socks or booties staying on! I just ordered (for a friend) a pack of 5 plain white ones from next for £18.

As for ease to put on - do you have a cat? If you can't get the item of clothing on a cat, it's useless for a newborn as well.

Really like Next, with feet but no built in scratch mitts, poppers at the front or bottom, velours is my fav material, difficult to find though. In winter, I add a layer underneath : long sleeves body vest as baby room is at 16C, spring and autumn, short sleeves body vest with cotton sleep suit, if summer is hot, cotton sleep suit only, if very hot, body vest short or longsleeves only.

Mother care, next, and m&s are the best in my opinion. They washed and washed, withstood puke and poo, were stain treated etc and still looked good.

Expensive Jo Jo bebe ones etc not so good. At £20 plus they were a let down, faded and bobbled so quick.

I just bought multipacks that did the job and one special first baby grow that I have kept for each dc.

I know to pull the vest down Hazle but I'm talking the out of the vest all over the gro poo. The sleep suits with the poppers just between the legs are a pain in the arse in that situation.

I found the sizing weird on m&s ones. Very wide. DD never filled them and she was a big baby.

LOL HazleNutt - I have to admit to trying a set of 0-3 months dungerees on one of our Persian cats because I was curious if they would fit - got them on okay and the cat looked hilarious but had to spend half an hour picking cat-hair off of the beautiful dungerees afterwards - oops! (I know I need to get out more!)

I've bought baby grows with feet for night-time and without feet (and some socks, Sock-Ons and booties) for daytime.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Asda yet. The ones I've had from there have been lovely and soft. M&S also nice.

I would steer clear of Tesco - they seem to have bizarrely short legs.

And the ones with poppers on the crotch are fine - just put them on feet first, as Hazle said. I was dubious at first, but tried some and they looked really cute!

If the gro with crotch poppers only gets poo on it, surely it has an envelope neck like a vest and can be pulled down too?

I personally prefer poppers down the front and suits with feet. Sleepsuits with poppers down the sides are a nuisance to get the leg into the side without the poppers. Never bothered with scratch mitts but had the turnover cuffs on some sleep suits and used that function as a glove when it got cold outside.

With feet, studs down centre, nothing that goes on side or at the back for small baby, never.

There's some really pretty ones in boots and next.

Next are ones are very good quality but they were too wide for my LO (I've got a slim baby). Boots ones are slim fit.

Yes to scratch nits but only for first few months and yes to feet as socks never stay on and wtf would you struggle with booties or anything that is not going to make you DC as comfy as possible.

John Lewis 3 packs are the best IMO and look after the clothes by not tumble drying them.
