Saltwater sandals

I need some flat sandals to wear on holiday, and just for scuffing around in at the weekends in summer when heels/wedges are not an option, e.g., if I'm going shopping, walking for miles etc.

I have some Birkenstocks and find them OK, but not brilliantly comfy. I also have some Fly london sandals with a tiny wedge, but they are nearing the end of their life.

So, I've been looking at Saltwater sandals - I love the colours and they look pretty comfy. Any opinions/experience of wearing them gratefully received.

I bought a pair and on the shop's recommendation sized up as they felt tight. Grrr. Bloody hell, within one wear they were massive, the sales asst obviously didn't know what she was talking about. Get normal size (or even half size smaller). They are lovely though.

JanePurdy · 11/03/2014 19:47

I have a pair. I do rate them but not for walking miles & miles in. My DDs have matching red ones & I was v impressed as my kids are hard on their shoes & the sandals stood up to it.

You can try them at Millymog in Didsbury if you're around that area.

WaitingAndSpinning · 11/03/2014 20:16

Their website recommends you size up but I don't like sandals that have too much space in front of my toe so stayed in my regular size.

BringMeTea · 12/03/2014 10:17

Ordered red! Excited. Have coveted these for a couple of years. Can't wait to try out the seaworthiness.

mrsbirdie · 12/03/2014 10:53

Oh sod it. Will give them a go. Can always send them back if I can't fit my massive feet in them.

Now - red or tan? Tan would go with everything and all, but the red are just so gorgeous!

And what is the general consensus on sizing up/down/ordering your normal size?

Saurus72 · 12/03/2014 10:54

Red definitely!

Sizing - on the SunSan website, there us a chart showing your UK size and how it corresponds to Saltwater sizing.

Gold are lovely too, not too blingy.

BringMeTea · 12/03/2014 11:14

Ordered my usual size. Considered tan for same reasons (versatility) but have the Clarks originals in brown and they are quite similar. And. Red is cute!

BirdyArms · 12/03/2014 17:40

I have them in orange and absolutely love them, lived in them last summer, the orange seems to go with everything (or more like doesn't go with anything but adds a cheerful punch of colour). The advantage of the red is that they have a red sole rather than a white sole like most of the other colours, I have to give mine a wipe each time I've worn them otherwise they look a bit gross but they have stood up well to lots of wiping and scrubbing. Find them true to size for my widish feet. They are a bit like converse type trainers to walk in, ie not loads of cushioning but comfy for short distances. Thinking of getting silver for this summer.

HopefulHamster · 12/03/2014 18:44

I bought them in red - fab!

Then got them gold but they went a bit funny when I went in the sea, which they're not supposed to, but SunSan (I'm uk) replaced them and now I have lime green too!

I can walk for at least 50 mins or so comfortably in them hard walking and it's fine, have worn them all day plenty of times too. But then I can get away with little support.

I hear they are good for people who blister easily and certainly mine have never hurt.

I am a size 4.5 normally and I get the size that is a 5 uk - but if you buy off amazon it's the size that's 5 big kid or 7 woman.

mussyh · 12/03/2014 19:48

I also have delicate narrow feet that blister if you look at them, and here's another suggestion for comfy sandals - the Fitflop Lulu Slide. I bought some recently and wore them constantly on holiday, including on a 4 mile walk, and they still felt great. They don't have the usual flip flop toe post, but two straps across the foot.

John Lewis sell them if you need to try them on, or order them online & have them delivered for free into your local Waitrose if you have one nearby. They also sell the Flare Slide, which fits the same, and is a bit more dressy.

I grew up in America wearing these all Summer, every Summer. I was so happy to find them again in adult sizes! They're indestructible and look nice with shorts or skirts.

Kate341 · 12/03/2014 20:08

I love them, they are so good for on holiday ... i ordered mine from www.kjslaundry.com/sun-san-sandals/

cheaper and free standard shipping. I have them for my daughter too but from www.kidsen.co.uk/salt-water-originals-in-shiny-yellow.html

TheDayOfMyDoctor · 12/03/2014 20:16

I'm quite intrigued by these as I've never come across them before. I hate my ankles though - they went a bit cankle like when I was pregnant (almost 6 years ago) and never really recovered. Worried that because of this, the ankle strap might just look a bit frumpy? Desperate for some comfortable sandals for summer holidays though.

Dappydongle · 12/03/2014 20:52

I've had mine 5 years and they are still going strong.

amumof2 · 12/03/2014 21:43

Are these real comments. These sandals look like they might possibly be comfortable but they look quite ugly to me.

Mygoldfishrocks · 12/03/2014 21:55

They can't be real comments. Gotta be an invasion surely ?

There is NOTHING stylish or beautiful about these hideous things. My mother - aged 66 - wouldn't wear them.

Ugly and frumpy are just two words I'd use. I get they might be comfy but stylish ?? Never!

LivUpNorth · 12/03/2014 22:51

I don't think they are meant to appeal to the over 60s. They are stylish, but as ever it helps to be slim and skippy to carry it off.

HopefulHamster · 12/03/2014 23:20

shrug I just like the colours and I always prefer flat shoes so they work for me - I did have some birkenstocks but they tend to rub on my feet. I am just debating purple or turquoise next... Unless I got navy?

SundaySimmons · 13/03/2014 07:19

Nice for children.

Completely hideous for adults unless you are planning on wearing them with socks and are going as a 1970s RE teacher to a fancy dress party.

Not geek chic, they just look ugly and cheap.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/03/2014 08:06

I like flat sandals and comfort is definitely higher on the list than style for me, but even I would draw the line at these, they are awful.

sarahandmallard · 13/03/2014 08:31

They're actually very trendy and quite popular with hipster mums

I got mine at this little trendy London shop

Treaclesmart · 13/03/2014 09:48

I'm a fan of merrell sandals for support and comfort. I really like the look of the strappy siena ones. Got them last year and lived in them. I am liking the saltwaters though...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/03/2014 10:01

Trendy does not necessarily mean stylish.

impty · 13/03/2014 10:11

They may be trendy but they are not stylish!

As for hipster style, the link you posted was from 2012. So I suspect many a hipster will have moved on. And again 'hipster' is a bit of a look that is easily copied. Hipster's, especially self proclaimed ones, are very rarely stylish! They are good at copying a look though, and end up looking a bit uniform. We are all unique together....

Emperor's new clothes I think...

(Am in a creative field surrounded by Hipster's young and old, but used to work in fashion)
