Am thirty five.

Face not quite as perky lately.

Alright, face not in any way perky lately; it's all fairly depressing in the mornings. I am not keen on botox / fillers idea, so it came to me that someone out there is currently marvelling / gloating in the bathroom mirror about their amazing wonder cream or serum or scrub or whatever that's revolutionised their middle aged skincare regime.

HALP

thanks in advance!

no

it wont make any difference

MarianForrester · 04/03/2014 21:51

Eat well, relax, be happy, moisturise, you will look great. All those lotions and potions are just a con.

ggirl · 04/03/2014 21:52

Glycolic acid to get rid of top layer..sounds horrendous but there are loads of different ones and it helps reduce very fine lines or age marks.

One good one is Alpha h- liquid gold .

Other thing is Retin-A , I get mine from friend abroad

AnnabelleDarling · 04/03/2014 21:53

Sleep, sunscreen, lots of protein and good fats like avocado in your diet.
My friend went to a dermatologist who recommended La Roche Posay to her so I've been using it and am happy with the results.

Many swear by Estee Lauders Advanced Night Repair, but i didn't see any difference in my skin with it.

I've read a few recommendations for Charlotte Tilberry's Magic cream and I am seriously tempted.

Standinginline · 04/03/2014 21:54

Drink plenty of fluid ,don't lay on your face and use tons of astral at night (have you seen Joanna Lumley ; she swears by the stuff !!).

The moisturiser and fluid I do ,but can stop sleeping on my front. I literally sleep with my face flat on the pillow ,lol.

Standinginline · 04/03/2014 21:55

"Can't" stop sleeping on face...

I have to agree with others.

Expensive creams are a complete con.

In my opinion it all comes down to whether you smoke and sunbathe and the rest of it is genetics.

I am almost 34 but look in my late twenties and haven't a single wrinkle or blemish.

I have never smoked and stay out of the sun. My diet is pretty good but not amazing. I try to drink lots of water and use only a basic moisturiser. I wear makeup every day and take it off with cheap wipes. I think that carrying a few extra pounds makes your face smoother and less wrinkled as well. The old face or body dilemma.

I know other women my age who look substantially older. I don't think any miracle cream is going to change that.

CandyKate · 04/03/2014 21:59

Please tell me that I'm not middle-aged at 35?!

Technical · 04/03/2014 22:01

No smoking

Stay slim but not skinny

Stay out of the sun

Drink lots of water

Eat well

In that order

ggirl · 04/03/2014 22:02

Not many have wrinkles in their 30's even early 40's..nowt special about that .
I didn't start to get them around eyes until late 40's ..real drooping starts after menopause.

Excpet if you smoke though..then you look like an old trout in your 20's

Can't believe I'm going to offer advcice on this subject... what the hell, this is what I do and find all helpful (I am 46 btw and you are a fresh-faced baby from where I am).

Simple face-wash in morning. Doesn't do much but cleans boatraace.

Clinique repair ware/wear? around craggy tired wrinkly eyes, very helpful! Gets rid of crow-lines rather well. Also allows for concealer/ foundation over the top.

Foundation if wearing that day is Maybelline Dream Fresh BB. VCery nice, smoothing and natural, or another one I like is a boots one Lift and Luminate, I think?

Vaseline for mouth.

I probably look like a terrible old crone to the lovely young mums up the school, but I can tell the difference.

MerylStrop · 04/03/2014 22:08

Sleep

Drink water

Don't smoke

Glycolic facials are good then generally also any facial that involves proper massage also good.

Don't get too thin

TheJumped · 04/03/2014 22:08

Exfoliate - chemically is best so you don't drag your skin around with a facecloth. Glycolic or salycilic acid products are great - I use a glycolic night cream from Bravura - I recommend their products - no frills and cheap but do what they need to.

Moisturise - daytime whatever you like as long as it has SPF, the higher the better. And stop using powder to set foundation unless you really need it - it's very ageing. Nightime you don't need expensive products but face oils are lovely and can't hurt - I currently use Nuxe facial oil which smells divine, and lasts years as you only need a few drops from the good sized bottle and it cost me £15. Then slather on loads of Nivea thick basic cream. I don't bother with eye creams and the like - moisture is moisture, as long as it doesn't clog you up and give you spots / milia.

And drink lots of water, get lots of sleep, lay off the booze.

TawdryTatou · 04/03/2014 22:09

Neal's Yard Frankincense Nourishing Cream.
Drink plenty of water/herbal tea.
Don 't drink too much alcohol.
Plenty of sleep.
Plenty of sex.
Plenty of slap.

lurkingaround · 04/03/2014 22:29

Don't waste your money.
What works: eat well, sleep well, no ciggies, watch sugar intake (and that includes alcohol), use SPF every day. Retin A will help, if you can tolerate it. Glycolic will help the appearance of skin and can stimulate a bit of collagen production.

What doesn't work: prettily packaged, hyped-up, expensively advertised, emulsions of oil and water, with added angels breath, pixie dust and a sprinkling of wishes from that pretty pink castle in the air. Seriously. It's a heap.

So, clean, SPF. Moisturise for comfort. Invest in a fab light reflective foundation and other decent slap.

madmomma · 04/03/2014 22:51

totally agree with all that lurking

For me the most shocking 'ager' is wine. I look so much older the morning after.

lurkingaround · 04/03/2014 23:04
Smile A little light reading to put us off our wine and gorgeous sugar. God it's depressing. Hand me my wine.
lurkingaround · 04/03/2014 23:10

A short abstract, I'm on a roll

lurkingaround · 04/03/2014 23:13

Last one. Anyone fancy a biscuit?

RonaldMcDonald · 05/03/2014 00:44

nothing magic
botox and fillers are the real answer...far better results than anything else i've tried and i'm hugely vain

however
spf
bha
retin a
good serum
peels
sunglasses... all help

think the drinking water thing is balls
think the staying off sugar and booze thing is sadly true but even I am not that vain

noddyholder · 05/03/2014 08:04

Botox and decleor and water. I have said before I took part in trials re water levels in body when I was on dialysis. Skin was incredible when very hydrated. I don't do SPF gives me spots but have always worn foundation even light and a hat or stay out of direct sun. Ultimately inthink genes play a huge role.

Floisme · 05/03/2014 08:12

Don't smoke
Don't sunbathe
Use a sunscreen
Use a moisturiser - it won't make wrinkles go away but it can camouflage them. Personally, I wouldn't bother spending that much.

Ignore the anti aging creams and serums. If they actually made a difference, they would be classified as pharmaceuticals so you wouldn't be able to buy them over the counter anyway.
The beauty industries are taking the piss and getting very rich at our expense.

MyRealNamesBernard · 05/03/2014 11:39

I have looked like an old hag since my first child was born, when I was introduced to the delights of sleepless nights. On the (very rare) occasions I have had compliments about 'looking younger' or 'radiant' I have usually had a full night's sleep (an undisturbed eight hours) have been wearing a colour that really complements my skin tone AND have been wearing a decent foundation.

Also, I have noticed improvements to my skin recently, since I started cleansing properly. I do the double cleansing thing, which has been recommended on S&B. All I use is the cheap-o Boots-own cold cream, but it seems to do the trick as I have genuinely noticed a difference - I look a bit more fresh faced.

Finally - booze! I guess it's best avoided if you want to look younger. However, I love it too much so just make sure I have a glass of water between each glass of wine to dilute the effects.

Having said that, my great auntie looks amazing for her age - she's 80 and looks about 65. But her skin looks like that of a 50-year-old (younger when she puts on her make-up). She was a proper party animal in her day, and can still drink most of us under the table. She tells me her secret is taking all her make-up off at night and good genes..... unhelpfully, I didn't inherit the genes.
