Where can I find tiny maternity clothes?

Help! I'm a UK size 4-6, 5'1", and usually find a Gap US size 0 fits me perfectly. I also have a few pairs of size 6 Next Petite trousers, which are mostly a bit too big, especially on the waist, but OK if freshly washed.

I'm now nearly three months' pregnant and am dreading having to buy maternity clothes as I have no idea where I'll find any small enough! All my friends who've had babies have told me that I'll have major problems finding anything to fit me - most maternity ranges seem to start at a size 8 (if you're lucky) and few do shorter lengths.

Gap do a range of maternity wear, but it's only available in the US and they don't ship to UK addresses.

I'm not showing yet but I'm already starting to panic that I'll have to walk around in clothes that don't fit me and look like a bag lady in a couple of months time.

There must be other very petite women out there who are/have been pregnant. What did you do? I don't have to be too smart for work but I can't really wear combats/jogging bottoms - also need at least one pair of jeans as I don't think I can survive 6 months without any denim!

Thanks!

www.isabellaoliver.com do small sizes

topshop and dp also might be worth a look

JackieNo · 11/08/2006 16:29

Funmum seem to have a petite range (but not sure just how petite that is). And some more here

AvaLou · 11/08/2006 16:30

I'm far from petite, but have gone through my pregnancies wearing normal clothes.
I hate maternity clothes, even the posher ones are frumpy.
Just buy jersey or stretch cotton skirts and dresses, longline tops, and get one of those belly belt things.

nailpolish · 11/08/2006 16:30

Try Topshop, H&M

PrettyCandles · 11/08/2006 16:35

I can't remember who makes this (Perfectly Happy People?), but there is a product which is basically an extender for ordinary fly-fronted trousers. You button one end to the buttonhole of the trousers, the other end is extendable and buttonholes to the button of the trousers, and in between is an elasticated flap of jersey fabric which tucks inside the open fly of the trousers. If you have a compact bump they apparently work very well, but you need long tops over them.

Stiglet · 11/08/2006 16:46

Have you thought about investing in a belly belt and wearing your normal trousers. I had one when I was pregnant and it was fab! That way you just by slightly longer regular tops to cover it. You should find them if you google belly belt!

tinytitch · 11/08/2006 17:53

hi i had the same problem - all maternity clothes even petite ones were massive. i found that topshop whose sizes are usually really small were massive for maternity clothes. When you mention it to people they just laugh and tell you that you will be the size of house soon, but its not the case! i spent the last few months of my pregnancy pulling up my size 8 petite maternity trousers. Casual clothes were fine just bought combats a size bigger and wore under bump. Word of warning re belly belt only good if you plan to wear long baggy tops as it will show with anyting else.

MercyTung · 11/08/2006 18:02

Currantbun, I found Dorothy Perkins mat. clothes were absolutely fine. I am size 6/8. I bough t some good jeans from there with an adjustable waist (bit long in the leg, but easily rolled up). Dresses may be your best bet.

MercyTung · 11/08/2006 18:49

La redoute also do maternity clothes (size 6/8). Don't know about htere maternity clothes but their usual clothes in that size do come up pretty small (even I find them a bit slim cut sometimes).

Or as Avalou says, normal clothes which have an elasticaed waist will be ok

AvaLou · 11/08/2006 18:53

Ooh also, Topshop do brilliant maternity clothes, in size 6 too, but I think only in the Oxford Street and Manchester branches.

florenceuk · 11/08/2006 19:05

Vertbaudet is not too bad - quite slim-fitting in hips. Formes also small-fitting in hips (where the problem is). Next was always huge. Hennes and DP not bad. Also Benetton have a maternity range, no idea what it fits like though! Go for stretchy styles that have elasticated waists all round rather than more fitted IYKWIM - maybe a nice wrap dress over a pair of leggings for work? Or elasticated waist jersey trousers? I gave up on jeans as too uncomfortable anyway. Also I found that I needed a size up from my normal size from about 7mths on so even if they seem huge at 4mths, by 8mths they may be OK. Alternatively you can sew your own! Harry Dudley make lovely tops and skirts as well.

DIY maternity jeans: here

incy · 13/08/2006 15:49

Never bought any maternity clothes as they were massive on me even at 9m - so just bought regular clothes in a size bigger - lots of wrap dresses/wrap tops/ linen drawstring trousers.

shazronnie · 13/08/2006 15:59

get a belly belt and you can wear your normal trousers.

peachygirl · 13/08/2006 16:03

reet petite
I found this the other day when looking I'm 4'11 but not as slim as you.
I got a couple of good tops in debenhams a while ago, one of them wasthis and it is quite long (the red herring maternity range looks quite good too) I think it's really a question of looking round for slightly longer stuff that still won't swamp us. I'm 13 weeks tomorrow, why don't you join us on the due in feb thread?

Thanks for all the tips and recommendations! I will investigate all the suggestions when the time comes. Might have to look at mail order although am not a fan of this generally as it's always a pain to send things back.

I'm not a skirt/dresses person so will be looking at all the trousers, jeans and combats suggestions. Not sure I can morph into a skirt-wearer for the duration of my pregnancy - it's going to be hard enough adapting to being larger than I've ever been without having to completely redefine my style as well!

I'll have a look around and get a general idea of how big/small various ranges suggested come up. I may well be able to get away with "normal" clothes a size or so bigger for the majority of my pregnancy too.

Will also pop over to the "Due in February 2006" thread!

Thanks!

Do they have Mimi Maternity in the UK? Their sizes run small.

jabberwocky · 14/08/2006 12:06

Oh, and have you looked to see if anyone will ship Gap to the UK on ebay? I got some great maternity clothes a few weeks ago through a couple of ebay sellers.

DarrellRivers · 14/08/2006 14:35

I found Formes really good quality and very stylish(although a little expensive) and I am UK size 6 .

DarrellRivers · 14/08/2006 14:36

You can also get Formes stuff from ebay, obviously for much cheaper
