What do you wear on a long flight?

Looking for some tips! I have a 15 hour flight to cope with next month. I've done long flights before but always end up uncomfortable and cold and looking like a complete mess by the end of it. For once, I would like to walk through the arrivals gate looking like a respectable human being.

I always take pyjama bottoms. Change into them after take off. On top I wear thin layers but have a hoody for warmth (and so I can hood up if it all gets too much). Also take warm socks. And remove all make up once on plane and moisturise.

Have a 13 and 11 hour flight coming up. The above helped me cope last time.

Decathlon black jazz trousers they are stretchy, cotton and you can get them straight or wide legged. loose long top usually with stretch so it doesnt crease too much and then long line cardigan with cashmere or mixed fibre depending on destination and pashmina. On feet ballet flats, or smart trainers. Big pants and comfy bra. Then if going / coming back from somewhere cold I have one of those down coats that folds into a small bag - its a godsend as not bulky to carry round. Also doubles up as a pillow in delayed airports.
On board flight socks or extra socks, Evian water spray , hand cream, eye gel the elderflower stuff or similar from the body shop .

I travel long haul at least monthly for work. Don't wear something specially just for the plane; it's a waste of hand luggage space. I wear comfy stretch jeans and layers on the top -- long sleeved t-shirt, cardigan and big pashmina that can double as an extra blanket.

Don't wear slip on shoes - wear lace ups. My feet and ankles swell ridiculously on flights and you need shoes that are capable of adjusting. Flight socks (proper ones) are a good idea too.

PiratePanda · 03/03/2014 07:39

Oh, and yes to Rosa's down jacket too.

Rosa · 03/03/2014 15:20

Pirate panda this is where the Evian spray comes in handy .... On the feet that sprayed over flight socks helps with the swelling and with the air being so dry it dries quickly.

PiratePanda · 03/03/2014 20:00

Good tip rosa!

specialsubject · 03/03/2014 21:39

comfy stretchy clothes. Take off makeup, no-one is looking at you!! Keep moisturiser and lip balm handy and slap it on at regular intervals.

about an hour before landing, go and wash face, clean teeth, comb hair. Also quite nice to have a clean t-shirt at this point..

walk around every hour or so. Oh, and take a 2 litre empty bottle through security, fill with water afterwards and drink regularly. They do give out water but in tiny quantities.

Had a long haul recently - wore Hush Vanessa trousers with a stretchy long vest and a fine knit jumper, ballet flats and a big soft scarf for snuggling in. The Vanessa trousers are ace as they have stretchy waistband and are soft and comfy for travelling. Actually the entire outfit was Hush - just buy their stuff and you'll be fine, they specialise in postnatal / overweight / depressed / ill / travelling / hangover / rainy day comfort wear you can still look faintly stylish in IMO Grin

Wouldn't wear skinnies, even my comfiest ones wouldn't be comfy after 10 hours.

And in hindsight socks would be good - I'd wear ballet flats and pack socks in my bag for the flight.

Can I just say something else though, to all of you who spend several minutes in the aeroplane loo washing your face, cleaning your teeth and brushing your hair - that's incredibly unfair on the 3-year-old standing in the endless queue outside desperate to do a wee.

Please be considerate - you can clean your teeth between immigration and baggage claim and still be there before your bag and brush your hair at your seat.

CMOTDibbler · 04/03/2014 09:16

I agree PiratePanda - in fact its unfair on everyone who has woken up desperate for a wee before the seat belt signs go on.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/03/2014 09:18

Me too, I have been reading through this and thinking surely people don't change clothes and do make-up in aeroplane toilets?

charitygirl · 04/03/2014 12:11

Ha I do agree! Airplane loos are for using the loo!

Rosa · 04/03/2014 12:48

Couldn't think of anything worse... Plus airplane loos at the end of a LH. Flight can be dire ( in all classes). I do clean my teeth - usually whilst having a wee though and make up and hair done in seat. When going to Oz I used to do a wash and t shirt / knicker change half way rather than as you say before landing...

MarshaBrady · 04/03/2014 12:50

Yep the loo is the last place I want to spend any time fixing things after 13 hour leg. They are very grim by the end of it.

I go to the airport loo just to do teeth / hair etc before getting luggage.

PiratePanda · 04/03/2014 16:33

Yup. Plane loos at the end of a10+ hour flight are absolutely minging.

StrawberryCheese · 04/03/2014 17:51

I agree about plane loos, I try to avoid using them at all but not possible on a very long flight. I'd rather brush my teeth/change/sort make up in an airport loo.

I'm going to get some flight socks, didn't have them last time and I remember now how puffy my ankles were Shock

Off to to do some online window shopping...

Of course we do whoknows and we all do a wash and blow dry like Nicole scherzinger does! Wink

angeltulips · 05/03/2014 11:01

I so loads of long haul and I will either get changed totally or wear a cashmere tunic over leggings w my liberty print Nike converse-style trainers. If getting changed it will be cotton best, l/s cotton tunic, cashmere cardi and big scarf with cashmere track suit pants and thick socks. Either way, cotton underwear and a yoga bra (or no bra at all if changing on the plane). Loads of face & body moisturiser - I use neal's yard rose facial oil. Lots of water and tomato juice on board, and small regular carb-heavy meals.

In summary, CASHMERE :)

Change undies and bra at the end and put on deodorant, a dab of tinted moisturiser & mascara - this takes no more than 2 mins in the loo so no need to feel guilty about it.

I put my hair in a low plait once I get on board and then brush it out at the end (at my seat not in the loo!). Depending on how static-y I am (!) ill either wear it out or put it up in a topknot.

SUNGLASSES.

florascotia · 05/03/2014 11:23

In a previous thread on this topic there was a reference to a company that sold relaxed, pull-on clothing basics in ranges specially suited to hot or cold conditions. I've lost the reference, unfortunately. Does anyone remember it, please?

sailorsgal · 05/03/2014 11:43

I intend to wear my Hush harem trousers.Grin

missmartha · 05/03/2014 12:27

I hate long haul but have to do then anyway. A hex on people who do make up in the loo, some of us are wetting ourselves.

Also, if you take diazepam, please sit in a window seat, I get freaked when I board next to a window seat, then the person next to me takes a pill and promptly falls asleep.......for hours.

I am human, I will need to have a wee. I sit there wondering if I should risk climbing over, or wake the person up. It's a dilemma, what to do?

I carry small tester pots or sachets of moisturiser for my face but otherwise, just loose trousers, a t-shirt and sweater and soft flat shoes.

Heavy duty make up gets done after touch down.

SinglePringle · 05/03/2014 12:40

Same as PP - casmere trousers, cashmere socks, cashmere jumper, thin long sleeved cotton t-shirt underneath.

Always take make up off when I board and slap on loads of moisturiser & serum (I tend to buy new ones airside) and lip balm. I always use an Evian spray.

Clean teeth, apply deodorant, change top in plane loo before landing (takes seconds) Put make up on & brush hair back in seat. Change socks also.
