Debenhams is dire isn't it?

Who buys their shit?

Wandered in today. Totally deserted. Aisles and aisles of polyester shit. And the so called designers........Yet bizarrely there is always a queue for the changing rooms, despite no one being in the shop.

The girlswear is trash, just trash. Ted Baker, Blue Zoo. It's all nasty. Why is it full of such horribleness?

ours is quite good, sells warehouse, topshop miss selfridge, nails in, benefit, phase 8 (for the mumsWink) some home furnishing stuff is okay too.

Stropperella · 02/03/2014 17:01

I agree that most of their stuff is gruesome, but the bras are good.

EugeneKrabs · 02/03/2014 17:03

wildthong - beauty hall or branded underwear?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 02/03/2014 17:05

Yes. So depressing.

There's only that and M&S here ... I want a John Lewis. Sad

The horrible chummy-voiced man who does the in-store adverts makes me want to become homicidal, too. Especially after I spent 20 minutes filling out an application for a store card because they pestered me for so long, and then it came up saying I couldn't have one anyway. Hmm

BumWad · 02/03/2014 17:09

Underwear that's it.

The rest of it is shit. No wonder their sales have taken a hit recently

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/03/2014 17:13

Vouchers - Benefit / Urban Decay / Clarins / Lancome

or kitchenware/bedding?

cocobongo · 02/03/2014 17:20

They went really downhill when they decided to cut down on the franchises and emphasise their own labels as it was more profitable. Since then, whenever I have the misfortune to venture in, there is absolutely nothing I see that I want to buy.

My local store had a makeover to give more room to cosmetics and as part of it, removed loads of tills. So on the few occasions it is busy (ie their 25% off weekends) you have to queue for ages for the privilege of paying them. Luckily doesn't affect me as I don't want to buy anything, but DH gets pulled in by the promotions and buys his suits/ jeans there. Though I have finally persuaded him to stop buying his shoes there as they always fell apart after a few months!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/03/2014 17:22

IMO it has too many departments. Our local one has 4 storeys but you have to go up umpteen escalators to get to the one you want.

I used to go in there loads when my DC were little because they liked the cafe/resturant and the loos were clean.

There are surprises (I got a gorgeous table cover with 8 napkins - it's a nightmare trying to find one to fit our table) really reduced but it was on the top floor in a sales corner that I just happened to be in.

I don't like the clothes there , but got a John Rocha jacket for DS years ago.

Saurus72 · 02/03/2014 17:30

DH likes the John Rocha clothes and I'm so glad and relieved he has finally found somewhere that he can go to buy clothes as he is majorly self-conscious about clothes shopping, he hates it with a passion, and I was starting to think he would have to wear his old clothes forever. He can still only handle the small Debenhams store near us though, the bigger ones are overwhelming to him. He's like a startled fawn when he's shopping for clothes - I have to pretend to ignore him and be totally uninterested, otherwise he gets flustered. In reality, I am actually scanning with laser eyes to see if there's anything he's neglected to find, as he will only really look at a couple of rails before it all gets too much. I found him a John Rocha jacket for £20, reduced by 70% by that method!

So we venture in a couple of times a year in the sale to top up his shirt supply, but that's it.

MillyBlods · 02/03/2014 17:34

I like the underwear section and I used to like the Café but even that has gone downhill the last two years. They used to make their own food but now its ready wrapped and bought in. Awful and the staff turnover is very quick and they don't seem to be trained well at all.

Onlyconnect · 02/03/2014 17:36

Yes it's dire

ginmakesitallok · 02/03/2014 17:38

Our debenhams is lovely, clean, great staff, fabulous makeup section and always find something to wear. Don't know what you're all moaning about. If you don't like it don't go.

GeorginaWorsley · 02/03/2014 17:40

Yes I much prefer John Lewis Grin
Debenhams seems stuck in some 1980s time warp.
I like Phase Eight but never look at it in Debenhams .

MillyBlods · 02/03/2014 17:45

news.sky.com/story/1189312/debenhams-cfo-quits-after-profits-warning

Unfortunately Debs is definitely on the downward turn and most of the stores in the UK are experiencing bad reviews from Customers.

newgirl · 02/03/2014 17:48

The school uniform is good - tights etc and I bought a fab party dress for dd - not seen anything for me though

dottyaboutstripes · 02/03/2014 17:49

I buy my make up and skincare there but that's about it. Although I do find some random gems online - and bargainous lingerie sometimes

They have a nice website. I buy quite a lot of stuff from there for work.

balenciaga · 02/03/2014 17:54

Yeah it's a shithole

I don't know how it stays open tbh

lurkingaround · 02/03/2014 17:56

Agree, depressing.
I've seen the bra women here recommending debenhams own brand for smaller backs but I can't bring myself to go in.

I buy the kids rashies for holiday swimming there. Online tho. And only because so few other places do them.

You'd think their marketing dept would be able to do smthng, it's not like nobody knows the place is shit.

stella69x · 02/03/2014 18:00

Had to time waste in my local city yesterday, must say HoF had a lot better offer but debenhams had on in store watch shop that replaced my battery and gave away free coffee voucher for whilst you wait.

JohnGilpinsWife · 02/03/2014 18:00

I sometimes get a bed linen bargain in Debbos, but never look at the clothes. All that acrylic sets my teeth on edge.

TeaAddict235 · 02/03/2014 18:10

I used to really like Debbos when I graduated and was in my first job without much to spare. Their sales are really good, but yes you have to rifle through the tat to find the gold! Now the town that we live in only has a HOF and their stuff is either too middle aged or too expensive, plus they have a snobby air about them there if you wear casual clothes in the store.

OhTheDrama · 02/03/2014 18:22

We didn't get a Debenhams in our nearest city until the last ten years so it never really occurs to me to look in there and when I do there's nothing I like. DH would get quite a lot of his workwear from there, he's really keen on the place. I like their home section though and we had our wedding list there but clothes wise it's a no for me and the kids.

I find it quite draining trying to sift through all their "designers at debenhams" ranges which are shoved in alongside all the high street concessions. The layout puts me off the most.

aoife24 · 02/03/2014 20:13

I buy some things from time to time, the John Rocha bit in my local shop is pretty good, the undies and tights are ok and the make up section is also good. Not a ringing endorsement I realise, but not shit.
