Am sick of wearing jeans and plain tops, want something a bit erm prettier ( i think).

It's an adult course but in a college full of teenagers so I don't want to look like i'm trying to be 16 but don't want to look like my gran either (haven't actually got a gran).

Budget is as cheap as poss and especially clothes from DP as my mum has a card

It's full time so need a fair few tops and a few bottoms and advice on whats sort of shoes with what too.

Oh and I know i'm there to learn and it's not a fashion parade LOL

I didn't know you were going to college - sounds great. I'm a big fan of skirts - mediumeweight ones - esp denim - are excellent value cos they can do any season - flip flops or sandals and vest tops in summer, cardi for when it gets septembery and when it gets proper cold, wear with boots and long sleeved tops. also if you're uncertain about patterns and frills etc on your clothes (like me) Accesories are a good way to individualise what you wear

nutcracker · 11/08/2006 10:24

Yep i'm taking the plunge whilst I have the chance as dp is still signed off sick with no return date planned so he will look after Ds, and drop off and pick up Dd's from school, meaning no childcare worries for me. Will be as broke as broke can be but still.

I think for starters I am going to get a couple of pairs of jeans and a few tops and then see if I can find some bracelets etc that go with them. Then i'll ask for clothes vouchers for xmas and buy some more

MrsSpoon I can still fold those paper caps!

If you've got plain tops, trous etc sorted already I'd look for accessories - earrings, necklace, hairband, scarf or bracelet in a colour relevant to the outfit always look great - I have loads of bog-standard 3/4 sleeve v-neck tops I wear with boring plain trousers, and they suddenly look much more interesting with addition of one of the above!
Primark also good for this kind of thing - I suit scarves worn like hairbands and got some v good ones for £1 each

tiredemma · 11/08/2006 10:43

ooooh- its very exciting isnt it nutty????

im so pleased for you, it will give you a new found "freedom" so to speak and do wonders for your confidence.

which uni are you going to apply to in nov?

MarvellouslyMilitantPeachy · 11/08/2006 11:01

Know that problem LOL, from Uni.

I wear lots of stuff; jeans and t-shirts yes, but also I got a lovely long heavy velvet skirt off e-bay; and combats are good too, as are Asda and New Look. matalan varies, but worth a look.

I also have started to jewellery / hair bands, again cheap and mainly Accesorize or Claire's Accesories.

But dor emember that when you go it'll be autumn, so make sure you have plenty of warm things. Indeed, a nice pretty coat and a few glam jumpers or wraps might be better than worying about tops?

MarvellouslyMilitantPeachy · 11/08/2006 11:05

That nursing pic.... not a patch on my old student niurse outfit LOL! Full length narrow black and white stripes, white starched colour, paper hats, black tights white plimsolls. Yuck! The stripes hurt your eyes, we used to use them to test baies eyes at the clinic; any baby could look at them without flinching got extra tests.

And they charged £50 for 2 ugly dresses.

Still.

I got a fab, huge khaki bag from Peacocks last year for under a tenner, lasted fine.

fairyfly · 11/08/2006 11:10

Stripey tights, cut off dungarees with badges all over the straps, one badge must mention the white stripes, one must mention hating things, one must be about weed and one must be about how you love magic or something.

A hat of some sorts, or undercut your hair if you're feeling brave.

Make sure you carry a book around that makes you look like a pretentious arsehole, failing that just a broadsheet or the NME that you will never read.

Oh and you've got to try and shag you're entire class in the students union on the first meet up after drinking 12 pints of snakebite and black through a straw.

Sara wants me to apply to UCE, B'Ham and Wolverhampton Emma. I want to go to UCE I think, get to wear lovely grey, white and red uniform then LOL.

I'm going to go through my wardrobe later (won't take long) and see what stuff I already have that does fit and go from there.

Think I might have a nice coat off my mum for xmas, she;ll buy it me before then if I need it.

tiredemma · 11/08/2006 16:37

Uce uniforms make everyone look as if they have got MASSIVE arses!!!

have you sent off for prospectus's from each uni?

nutcracker · 11/08/2006 18:59

Ooooh no I haven't, shall I do that then ??

God, never in a m illion years did i think i'd ever be going to uni

Other than jeans, you could try skirts, which can be worn with boots in the winter, combat type trousers with trainers, city shorts (again worn with boots when it gets colder), or maybe some linen trousers.
As for tops, there are loads of nice tops around! Wrap type tops are nice, fitted jumpers, patterned stretchy type tops, cardigans worn over a nice vest top or maybe some nice shirts or tunic type tops.

There are still sales in some shops & you can pick up great bargains! Debenhams have up to 70% off a lot of their stuff, as do Jane Norman & French connection. Infact I picked up some black city shorts in French Connection, which were down from £65-£15!

Hope you enjoy your college course.

you can go online to their websites nutty and request a prospectus.

www.bham.ac.uk for birmingham uni

www.uce.ac.uk for UCE.

Both campus's are in edgbaston, UCE is just off Five ways and Bham is by the QE hospital.

UCE has loads of building work and refurbishment done on it, but i fell in love with B.ham uni- only thing is that Bham doesnt offer the childrens nursing as a diploma course- only degree.

go to their websites and go to 'school of health' on each, loads of info.

proudofmyboobs · 12/08/2006 10:04

Hi, I have just finished my first year at Uni too and wanted to say, don't worry about fashion!! Some of the students looked as if they had just got out of bed! others looked as if they were ready for a night out on the tiles!

As for stationary, last year I had a file for each of my 3 modules and it was a bugger, this year I have a different notebook for each of my modules, smaller and keeps everything together instead of file pages falling out all over the place

Oh and I wear jeans, jumpers (not sweatshirts unless it's the uni one) or skirts, all teamed with either my black boots, my flip flops or my purple DMs depending on the weather

nutcracker · 12/08/2006 11:17

Love your name proudofmyboobs LOL

B'Ham uni's no good then emma because I can't afford to do the degree, you don't get as much financial support do you ??

Will go on the websites and have a look now.

Meant to say, I went shopping yesterday and tried on loads of jeans but I seem to be in between sizes at the mo so didn't get any. Got a jacket though
