Frugal Spring Cleaning

Winter is on its last legs - it's time to think about spring clothes, gradually clear out winter items and get ready for the new season.

If you are considering a shopping ban, interested in frugal living, minimalism, downsizing, or just want to reassess for a few days where you are headed, this thread is for you. Continued from here, so you are also welcome to update how things are going!

I'd like to declutter a bit. (Here is an inspiring wardrobe detox link.) Get rid of piles of clothes and books, possibly reorganize my desk and makeup, and do a few other things. Perhaps even cook something nice and healthy.

I also think my mind needs some decluttering Wink. I have a few quieter weeks before life is going to get really hectic, so would love to recharge a bit...

If you want to join, let's do it together!

Mothermirth - was it the Clinique airbrush concealer? I have one that you'd be welcome to if the shade is right (01).

I think that I probably trump you all with pre-historic make up. I am 65 and in my cupboard I know I have some Rimmel block eye liner in dark brown which I bought in my early 20s! I think I last used it about five years ago. Tbh up until a few years ago I had never heard that make up had a shelf life. Shock In my defence I never had any problems with my eyes on the rare occasions when I used it.

Loving your prehistoric Rimmel NUFC Grin

Quite a lot of powder-based products last for ever. (Well, if it smells stale or off, the it's off. My almond oil smells stale, yuk.) On that blog, some readers were still using Dior bronzer from 1970s without problems... Some eyeshadows crumble with age, but often the rubbish applicators are much more fragile than the product itself Wink

I used up an eye cream last week and it felt like a small victory - another is about to be finished and I'm hitting the pan in my claggy Bobbi Brown undereye corrector... My main aim is to reduce the number of different containers littering up my cupboard and drawers. It's not going to be quick Grin

We should set up a makeup swapboard Wink If you need a discontinued product, chances are that one of us is still hoarding it Wink

I admire your patience frugal I just toss the whole darn lot to get it out of the way Blush SO wasteful but I can't bear the guilt from hoarding so I have to chuck it all out and promise to buy less.

You can keep your concealers - I don't have anything to conceal so it looks worse on than if I do nothing!

mothermirth · 14/03/2014 16:25

Thank you for that very kind offer cloutiedumpling, but it isn't the airbrush; it's much older than that! The one that works for me was discontinued long ago Sad. The tube is small, pale Clinique green and the writing rubbed off long ago, so I can't see what shade it is. I've lost the lid, but I keep a small piece of tinfoil on the end to stop it completely drying out. I've been to lots of Clinique counters in search of a replacement, but nothing is the same.

V impressed by your frugal methods Frugal Grin

mothermirth · 14/03/2014 16:27

sewbee I'm not trying to conceal lines and cracks; I wouldn't know where to start. At the ripe old age of ahem quite old, I'm still grappling with spots Shock

FrugalFashionista · 15/03/2014 10:56

The weather is fantastic so I want to go out but I also want to continue organizing and tackle the one remaining room

If you need motivation to get started, I can attest that the decluttered areas on our home feel lovely, so it's very rewarding and our house is also full of spring flowers now...

Also going to do some personal care, sort out my nails, cut DDs' fringes. Already did their nails.

Anyone else in spring cleaning mode today? Wink

Yep!

I feel great about getting rid of three bags of clothes and some old stuff lying around.

One bag - thrown away, old knitted scarves, old skirts and shirts. Things that I loved and coveted so it took ages to remove.

Another - to charity, okayish stuff that is still wearable. Old mac, belts that kind of thing.

Another to a swap shop - good condition stuff with a label I didn't wear much.

Three bags gone, feels great. Crazy to keep it all for so long.
