polo necks: fab or frumpy?

Just that, really. Fancy one, but last time I wore one I was tighter of jowl and flatter of boobage. Would you?

They seem quite trendy atm.

I'm quite partial to a necklace over them but not a normal one, a big statement one..

Floisme · 27/02/2014 10:41

I don't look good in a crew neck either or even a mandarin collar.
I think I read somewhere that chokers were coming back - not for me they're not!

TulipOHare · 27/02/2014 10:43

I have small boobs and a nice neck but I am also quite hippy, so look much better in a slash or boat neck.

I think if you look like Audrey Hepburn they can be fab - all flicky eyeliner and sexy 1960s cat-burglar Envy

Pandsbear · 27/02/2014 10:47

I love them and wear them all winter lalalalala. But they are skinny ones and I have a long neck and no boobs (to speak of really). In fact I have one on today - black, under a tweed shift dress.

CaptainHindsight · 27/02/2014 10:49

Ahh polo necks. I love them but they give me superboob.

Sad
ListenToTheLady · 27/02/2014 10:53

No no nooooo they are frumptastic unless you happen to be very willowy, swan-necked and strikingly gorgeous (so that your face draws the eye away from your neck).

I don't look good in any kind of collar, I'm not big-boobed but just generally big, tall and athletic and a deep v or scoop neck is much more flattering. But a polo neck would be the worst.

I think you can get away with it if you are old, male, silvery haired, possibly French, uber-confident and a bit of a fox. Like Jacques Cousteau

EvenBetter · 27/02/2014 10:57

No no no. I really don't like them, frumptastic.
I can't imagine anyone looking good in one, nomatterwhat shape you are!

Namechangeforamo · 27/02/2014 16:50

I think they are excellent for layering, especially under a coat. Olivia Palermo wears one quite a lot example or here
Here alexa chung wears one under a dress. Which I often do to wear a light dress when its cold.
Of course they are just made for under a leather jacket. No one does it better than kate
No definitely not a frumpy item I think its safe to say. Whether or not a particular wearer makes it frumpy is s different matter. (Which you could say for any item of clothing)

WhereIsMyHat · 27/02/2014 17:08

I have small boobs but they look crap on me. I wish they didn't. It's something to do with my neck, it's not short but just not right.

I'm not deterred, I still think they are fantastic.

And so does this dog.

bunnymother · 27/02/2014 21:42

Ha ha ha - woof. I am wearing a cashmere (no scratching) roll neck right now. I love it.

bunnymother · 02/03/2014 09:39

Clearly Kate Moss has been reading this thread, as she is at Paris fashion week wearing a polo neck with a pendant over the top. Do you think she will be naming us her her fashion inspiration? yourehavingalaugh · 02/03/2014 09:45

I had no idea they were in fashion. Not seen anyone in one this winter I'm sure. Anyway no good for me as they make me look huge. If you are tall and skinny and cool with short bobbed hair you could probably wear one.

pinkflaming0 · 02/03/2014 09:49

Another vote for fab. I love and have several but agree boobage quotient is key as is neck length.

I wear mine with 60's style A-line skirts or skinny jeans. Like a poster up thread I have long legs and relatively short body so they re-proportion me nicely.

Have a lovely Zara loose bat wing one I absolutely adore (wish I'd bought more colours). I's light weight and has a snug neck that hides the onset of crepeyness (sp?) beautifully.

MillyBlods · 02/03/2014 09:59

A cowl neck is more flattering, softer and because if the lower drapey neckline it flatters bigger boobs.

charitygirl · 02/03/2014 10:04

If a cowl neck suits then great, but to me they are the epitome of frump.

MillyBlods · 02/03/2014 11:46

Depends upon how you like to style yourself...I like elegant clean lines rather than " fashion".

charitygirl · 02/03/2014 11:51

Well there you go, I do love fashion - so am pleased to see the polo neck return as its not been around for a while. Seem to remember it wasn't a good look for me in years gone by, but will give it a go. I do recall disliking the sensation of wearing a chastity belt for the neck.

MillyBlods · 02/03/2014 11:54

o god yes....that sensation of feeling like I was choking...rhought it was just me.Smile

CointreauVersial · 02/03/2014 15:30

I have a few polonecks stashed away somewhere, but I think they are pretty frumpy on the whole. Particularly if they are too tight, even though I don't have boobage issues. They give me a "pin-head" look.

But I like how Kate Moss has styled hers; black works well. I could do that outfit.....

PenguinDancer · 02/03/2014 16:09

I'm skinny and young and they look good one me except that they widen my already wide shoulders. I don't wear them on 'porky' days cos they don't look as good with any kind of body shape other than wooden board imo
