I'm bored of jeans! What to wear as a SAHM

I live in jeans and ugly bobbly jumpers! I need a bit of an overhaul really but practical clothes are a necessity. We live in the country and I spend most of my time with muddy shoes and often find myself walking hills or through woods. I'm a cold person so warm clothes are a must. I'm 5'4 and a size 10 so should be fairly easy to dress but seem to look frumpy alot!

I saw the film Adore recently and loved the clothes Robin Wright wore in it....but then again she is stunning so it may be just her. Anyway, she wore alot of shirts so I thought that could be a look.....

Any thoughts? Smile

Hi OP, have you tried Hush? Their harem pants are to die for.

MsVestibule · 20/02/2014 22:13

The only non-jeans-but-still-casualish outfit I have is a short sleeved jersey skater dress with a long sleeved black top underneath. Worn with thick tights and boots, it's reasonably warm and makes me feel quite good about myself Smile. When DH saw me in it, he did a double take and said it was like having a new wife!!

I generally wear dresses with cardis and leggings, i have different boots that i wear with them.

I only really have one pair of jeans that fit just now, Sad but really like wearing dresses, i found a good shaped one in dps of all places and bought 5 different patterned ones. and have a few knitted ones as well. dresses are good for crawling around the floor with the baby as no bum crack on show from falling down jeans.

sotiredfornow · 20/02/2014 22:33

Anyone like to share links for day dresses suitable for SAHMs?

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 20/02/2014 22:39

dresses

the bardot ones and the twisted sleeve ones are good material for crawling around floors and not blowing up in the wind. might not be for every ones taste but find they suit me

Nothing wrong with jeans and jumpers, IMO. Especially if it's cold/wet and you have to be outdoors etc. Just go for naice jumpers (Cashmere crew necks) over a stripy tee or a liberty print blouse and really good jeans. You could pair with some cool boot socks and tall leather boots (Frye) or Hunters and a fitted anorak/parka or gilet and a luxurious scarf (ie Brora) and possibly a warm bobble hat. Whatever you wear has to fit your lifestyle and feel good on.

Brennan you have described the school run mums uniform of choice around here Grin

Alaska77 I love hareem pants but what do you wear with them in the winter footwear wise?

Hopefully · 21/02/2014 10:46

I do a lot of jumper dresses and thick opaques with boots in the winter. Can't abide leggings on me so I don't go down that road, but have been known to layer thermal tights on top of thermal tights for extra warmth in really cold winters!

I also wear tube skirts and opaques, with basically the same tops I'd wear with jeans.

youmakemydreams · 21/02/2014 11:00

I had the same problem. I loved skirts and dresses but always felt a bit over dressed and uncomfortable but I persevered because I liked them. Now I wear skirts and dresses loads. I have several pairs of fleece lined opaques from primark and wear them with boots, converse and rocket dogs. I am so used to it now and get loads of compliments. I've always had my own style nut did fall into a bit of a jeans rut for easiness. I also love wide legged linen trousers. I know mn hates them but I like them. I do like lots of colour too and can often be seen looking like a rainbow threw up on me.
Like pagwatch said I can wear anything with a pair of boots and a good coat.

Alaska77 · 21/02/2014 13:10

I wear my Hush harems with black ballet flats or slipper-style shoes with plain black socks in the winter for extra warmth. Or sometimes short Uggs! OK the latter isn't the most trend-setting of looks but it's comfy, stretchy and warm and it's not jeans!

BeaandMe · 22/02/2014 18:43

Thank you everyone!! This has given me lots of inspiration! Smile

I made an effort today, I wore grey wide leg trousers, a skinny breton top, a lovely chunky cardi and brogues. I even deep conditioned my hair and put on make up! I felt way better for it. Although it was somewhat ruined by putting a black maternity coat (yes I know I'm no longer pregnant!) on over it!!

I am loving all of the ideas. I will work on wearing dresses, and I saw some tube skirts today and considered them (I can't see something then buy, it makes me panic, I have to go away and come back another day to buy something!). I love dresses on the boden website but have never bought anything from them before, perhaps now is the time to start!

Brennan - You do make jeans and jumpers sound great! My jumpers are years old and were never decent to start with, perhaps that is the problem!

Not a SAHM but work from home a lot. It is very easy to just bung on jeans and a jumper in the morning to be comfy. I have been making more effort and trying to wear jersey dresses with thick tights and cardis and biker boots/brogues. I also have a couple of nice cord short skirts which look nice with slouchy jumpers. When I walk the dog I just bung on my walking boots and waxed jacket - v To the Manor Born.
I definitely feel better and more professional and "in control" if I have made a bit of an effort, even if I am just sitting working on my own at the computer (that said I have had days when I have worked in my jammies!).. I am 50 by the way, and I do shop in H & M!

IamInvisible · 22/02/2014 20:34

I'm a SAHM, well I'm unable to work. I can't wear jeans very often because they hurt me (I have severe back and pelvis issues).

I wear jumper dresses and knitted tights and biker boots.

I love my Hush ruched skirt, and I've just ordered this and this.

I like skater skirts and jumpers. I've got some tartan trousers and some 7/8th trousers that I wear with my brogues.

I'm 43 next week and buy bits and pieces in H&M.

BearPear · 22/02/2014 21:51

I'm the same size as you OP, I got some navy chinos in Next today. They fit like a glove, slightly brushed so warm and only £20. I also got some blue flats reduced in Wallis, there seems to be quite a few sales on the high street at the moment.
