When did you start going white/grey and what did you do about it?

I'm only just 30 so in my mind a little spring chicken. But in the last 3 days I've found 4 pure white hairs on my head. I've never dyed my hair and am a mid colours brown that has natural highlights so I do t th k its noticeable particularly, and the hairs I found were only very short compared to the rest of my hair, only about a third of the length.mDoes this mean that the new growth will start to come through white? I had thought I'd be very blasé when I started going white, but I'm too young for this damn it! But I also now I'm far too lazy to keep up any kind of dye job.do I just keep plucking at will??!

Anyone getting gray pubic hair, though? Ick, ick!!
I just noticed my first the other day, and plucked it out.
If I get many more, I'm going to switch from trimming to shaving it bald!

Early 20's. I've dyed it ever since and now have to touch roots up every 2 weeks and go to the salon every 6 weeks for full colour and highlights. If I didn't dye it I would be completely white but am not ready for that yet. Am 48.

Destinysdaughter · 09/02/2014 19:17

I used to have dark brown hair. Now in my 40s my hair is so white I've had to go blonde. The regrowth hardly shows so only dye it every 2 months. Started out with highlights but is full cover now

My mum has passed on a rubbish gene which means I started getting white hairs at 15.

I pulled them out for about 15 years, but then started getting noticeable short white hairs.

I dye now. Boring, expensive - but anything rather than be grey! One of my sisters let hers go grey in her late 20s, but after a few people mistook her for her children's grandmother, she hot footed it to the hairdresser.

I think most people get at least a few greys in their 20s. The problem is, so many women dye their hair that we associate grey hair with old age.

I started going grey in my 20s and made the mistake of dyeing for the next 20/30 years. When I turned 50, I made the decision to stop dyeing - it looks great and in many ways makes me look younger because it suits my ageing skin tone.

It's taken over a year to grow out and has been slightly traumatic because it's happened not quite overnight but more suddenly than if I had left it alone. I truly wish I had allowed the grey to come through naturally.

Have a look at the Going Grey Looking Great Facebook page for inspiration on how grey hair can look spectacular on younger (and older) women.

I find silver hair on men attractive.
I wonder why society can't view women the same way.

TeamWill · 09/02/2014 20:00

Im afraid I must politely disagree TheFar - there are endless threads about this and I have never seen a person with grey hair who looks younger Confused
if you cant be bothered with dyeing go ahead but " it looks younger" is a bit of a con IMHO.

It may look more flattering than a dark dye - which is why I go to an expert but younger - no .

hootloop · 09/02/2014 20:04

I am 30 and started getting a few greys last month, I shall just leave them, it doesn't really bother me, its just hair.

NaffOrf · 09/02/2014 20:34

The most flattering look for anyone - man or woman - is confidence.

Dyeing grey hair just seems a bit desperate, some how. A bit futile and sad.

Like wearing black clothing head to toe in the hope it'll make you look slimmer. It really, really doesn't. Any more than your highlights make you look 25.

Nerfmother · 09/02/2014 20:37

Ds is 6 and has a single grey hair!
Mine were at late twenties and I'm now going grey naturally.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/02/2014 20:41

I am 45 and have about half dozen grey hairs.

I will be dyeing when the time comes.

Liara · 09/02/2014 20:42

At 17. I have dyed it since.

schnockles · 09/02/2014 20:43

At 29, although lots more greys have appeared before my 30th birthday! Nothing done yet as I'm blonde but think I might get some highlights done to disguise it a bit.

nessus · 09/02/2014 20:47

First grey strand was spotted by my hairdresser when I was 29. She wanted to pull it out, I wanted (and did) to rush home and show it off to LDH as proof of my growing wisdom!

I can't wait till I am all grey as I think it looks fan and if my hair could take dye I would hurry up the greying process some Smile

nessus · 09/02/2014 20:48

Oops auto corrected fan should read fab!

Floisme · 09/02/2014 22:54

I've been going grey since my early to mid forties - I don't remember exactly because it really doesn't bother me. Admittedly I had fair hair to begin with.

It astonishes and depresses me that people acknowledge that self dying looks awful - and fucks up your hair - but that they still find it preferable to the possibility of looking older.

intheround · 09/02/2014 22:59

started at 16. in my 40s now. stopped dyeing it 3 years ago. Am totally grey but it's a soft warm grey, not steely grey or snowy white. I love it but a great hair cut makes all the difference.
