Which counter for good foundation and maybe a small make-up session?

I am planning to treat myself to some new mascara and foundation. I have been using max factor foundation but would like to try one of the brands in one of the department stores, hoping to also get my make up done. Which foundation would you recommend and how do I go about asking for a make up session?

Space NK

It's a whole different experience

How does Space NK compare to Bobbi Brown price-wise and quality-wise?

Kefy - Space NK depends which store you go to.

Some have lots of brands, some have Chantecaille, By Terry, NARS, Shu Uemura etc.

AFAIK/IIRC they're roughly the same maybe slightly more than say Bobbi Brown - By Terry and Chantecaille can be a bit more. Quality is about the same but then some really rate the brands in Space NK.

I'd go to both (dept store) and Space NK - try to get samples. don't commit. If you see something great say you'll be back. It won't sell out.

Good luck!

The only issue with BB is that most dept store's lighting is not great- you really need to see it in daylight.

I am using mainly BB at the moment but I don't think it is especially good value.

I have yet to find a foundation that is right for - stick is very sticky, Skin Foundation has zero coverage unless you apply 2-3 layers, and Moisture Rich is greasy ( and I have normal-dry skin.)

I also have their eye shadows and blusher. Their lippie stings my lips.

I think Clinique is just as good- I had to change because they stopped doing foundations in really pale shades- but their blusher, eye make up and lippies are good if you like the colours.

Having tried most foundations, am a total Mac convert. Nothing else comes close for me. But appreciate it's a very personal thing.

I would second the Bobbi Brown counters. Book an appointment for a full make up session. The SAs are friendly, knowledgeable and didn't try and do a hard sell on me at all.

You really need to test out a few, so be brave and ask to try, then test how they feel on your skin, and look in daylight too.Don't buy on the spot, take a sample if you can and go back once you've given it a proper try as they can be expensive mistakes to make. The service can be pot luck, so if you don't get the help you'd hoped for first time, keep trying - there are some great girls out there who really know their stuff and want to help.

Reporting back! Thanks to all your tips and encouragement I had my foundation, blush etc done at Bobbi Brown. The lady was very professional, knowledgable and friendly. I loved the products. I bought the foundation and was flirting with a luminous powder you can put on top which was gorgeous but at £40 quite pricey. I really wanted to have my eyes done too but Fridays are very busy for them and they can only do one "lesson" at a time.
I then tried the Estée Lauder counter for eye products. The lady there was eager to help and lovely but not as experienced. I got a nice mascara and liked their eye shadows.
So all in all a happy customer!
Thanks for your help!
