Please help me find a short hair style - 1960s? 1970s? Definitely not 1980s...

I have my hair dark. It is quite short, but growing out, usually pixie style ish, or asymmetrical. Last time the hair dresser buzz cut the back and I don't like it cut at the back with razors, this time she is leaving it longer!

So. I know what I want sort of but can't describe it well, can't find anything in like similar and so the hairdressers never get it right!

I have quite thin/fine hair, rather than an abundance of gorgeous thick hair. it is very grey/white at the roots and I get it dyed back to my natural colour (mid/dark brown), and no, I don't want to grow old gracefully thank you Grin

So I want something quite full at the front. I don't want wispy fronts, I don't want wispy over the ears - either be cut longer than the ears, or cut it above, none of this sort of in between fluffiness. I like the cut to be clean/crisp, but I also want to be able to wear it messy. I would quite like to avoid lots of layers, or, if layers are better to make it look thicker, I would like it to not look like lots of layers. I don't want 'textured' really.

Sultry looking. Sort of dark smokey eyes, moody face encapsulated with dark bold, messy short hair. (instead of 'just got out of bed and haven't had my coffee yet type of moody hair style') Grin

Do you have any idea what I am even talking about? Can you help me find it?

I think the name of the type of cut you're looking for is a wedge.

PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 22:41

oooh is it? I shall go look at that.

OP posts:
piratecat · 03/02/2014 22:41

i know exactly what you mean.

too long and you have the real bad weller kitkat stuck to the sides of your head. too short and no oomph/impact.

esp difficult with finer hair, as it can end up wispy so easily.

PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 22:43

this is nice

I think you are right, a wedge might find me what I want!

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 22:44

But, the problem with even saying wedge, is that it reminds me firstly of teenage lads with that awful wedge/step haircut, do you remember that anyone?!

OP posts:
piratecat · 03/02/2014 22:44

oh i love this. with the fringe a little shorter, and then split the hair over the ears.

here

PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 22:46

pirate yes, exactly. I had a good haircut once, she actually cut it how I wanted, and then, for some reason, took the sides up to almost the same as the rest of my hair and it looked like an actual basin haircut! I was horrified and had to return for it to be fixed. Had to have it cut short again to fix it, honestly there were no sides left!

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 22:46

Love the front and back, sides need to be shorter.

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 22:48

ok how about this with longer sides? her hair is similar colour and thickness to mine actually. Much prettier than me though Grin

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 22:49

mine is a bit darker than that colour, but not much, less chocolate, more flat brown.

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 22:52

OK. I might have found it.

here but won't be able to have it exact this time around as front not quite long enough, but it's a good base to aim for. I think I love this!

OP posts:
piratecat · 03/02/2014 22:53

her fringe is coming forward from really far back, to get that weight in the front. That was my problem, i have a not very high head iyswim!

blunt is key, you will need to find someone who knows what you are going for, do you have someone in mind?

PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 22:54

My hairdresser. I am trying someone new, at my usual salon mainly as my hairdresser now owns it and charges something like £60 for a cut! Shame as he would get it straight away. But maybe he will be in and I can call him over to give the new person some pointers. She is not new to the salon, but new for me.

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 22:56

i see what you mean. And, the side, that comes from quite far forward, and my hairline is higher than that, especially on that side where my hair naturally parts and is almost completely white and thinner than it used to be (not after tomorrow, my roots are gone Grin

PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 22:57

maybe I will go in with my computer, see what she thinks, if I have doubts, I might just get her to colour and consider him doing my cut if he can't give her some guidance. But, surely that's what he is there for, apart from being lovely to look at Wink

I had someone once cut my hair perfectly. I had walked into Tony and Guy as an off chance as my hair was awful and my own hairdresser was away, couldn't wait any longer and so walked in, she cut it, it was amazing. I went back, she couldn't recall how she did it the first time, even with some prompting of the model hairstyle she used, fucked it up badly. Obviously a fluke.

I never get the hair that I want Sad

piratecat · 03/02/2014 23:00

i'd take the laptop in for sure, they had one in the salon my dd had all her hair cut off at! (had to google Emma Watson pixie hair!)

how exciting. i am so tempted to get mine chopped, but not sure i could pull it off now at ripe old mid forties.

piratecat · 03/02/2014 23:02

that was the only proper haircut dd has ever had, i do it now. pity i am not nearer you, i seem to have the knack lol. (have always cut friends/boyfriends hair!)

PavlovtheCat · 03/02/2014 23:07

oh shame, I need a good hairdresser who can cut, and chat!

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 04/02/2014 15:32

Oh. Dear. When you are told that the 20% off deal is due to time of year not that the hairdresser is shit, don't believe them.

Disaster. I need to complain. Not sure how. I don't want her trying to fix it.

OP posts:
piratecat · 04/02/2014 16:07

oh shit. wasn't Toni and Guy was it?

PavlovtheCat · 04/02/2014 16:18

Not tony and guy! I have had a particular hairdresser for like 15 years. He cut my hair for years and when he moved salons I went too, he as the only one who understood what wanted and got it right. He then opened his own salon, and it has become very Very successful. He now charges 'director' prices, and, with a colour, it's a lot lot more than I can afford. Over the years I have gone elsewhere, from time to time to try and find another stylist as good shim, never really been happy and gone back, using several stylists who have been good. Not as good as him, but good enough. The odd bad cut, but mostly too short and needs to grow or not quite what I asked for, rather than the cut itself being bad. My moat recent stylist has just left, so i tried another one. I was promised that she ws good, just offering a discount due to time of year to encourage new clients. Not true.

Also, there was someone of cat fight, underlying negative atmosphere from some of the women there looks between some of hem, little whispers and the person washing my hair was quite rough, not due to technique but she seemed pissed off, like really pissed off about something. And all in all I felt very upset. I always dread the hairdresser and this time my fears where proved right.

You know I said my fear was luminous roots? The hairdresser didn't even check it's progress as the due was on my hair. I don't think it was left on long enough to cover my white hair, and so it's luminous. Probably not helped by her using an orange based tint. I told her I have flat brown as orange based tints don't cover the roots, they go orange and she encourage me to go warmer, saying she would avoid orange based tint. I told her I had a fear of being that woman who has orange roots and the rest of it black. Well, not quite that dramatic, but it looks like a home kit not a professionally coloured salon hair cut and colour.

I have had lots of tears.

PavlovtheCat · 04/02/2014 16:35

I emailed them. there are two owners, my old hairdresser and his brother who is also excellent, his brother has already emailed back and said he wants to correct it for me and give me some products as an apology. He was also very apologetic, I told him I was not bothered about the freebies. Just wanted a good haircut and colour. Although, I won't. Say no to some freebies obviously Grin I feel bad about complaining as he said he will address this personally as he takes the professionalism of his salon seriously, and I don't want the hairdresser to get into trouble. Although the moody one could do with some training on how not to take issues with colleagues out on the clients Grin

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 04/02/2014 16:36

So, Audrey Hepburn type pixie cut it is then? ! Seeing As I am going to have to go short to get it sorted.

OP posts:
piratecat · 04/02/2014 18:30

so glad you have had a reply back already, thank goodness the owner has standards which he upholds.

i know how upsetting it is to have bad hair.x
