Ridges on toenails

mrspolkadotty · 01/02/2014 10:14

I noticed last night the my toenails, particularly the big toes have ridges going across them. Not so bad at the moment as my feet are hidden in thick socks and boots but they're going to look awful come summer and sandal weather.

Anyone know what causes them and how to get rid of them?

They are exaggerated versions of what's happening on the fingernails, hence wear and tear. I tend to pedi monthly and buff them vigorously with a 3 way buffing stick. Sometimes I use a light emery action on the big toes....

A friend of mine said that she'd been to a chiropodist who used a mini Dremel. Eeek!

You want a white block buffer these will help rid the ridges

If you have a Sally's or a salon services shop near you the general public can buy from their or try ebay

Ridges that go across the nail are often caused by a injury or medication you are on can cause them as well

Sorry for the messages was double checking my nail manual it also states ridges across the nails should be mentioned to your gp as well x

Thanks for the replies, i do have a buffer so i'll give it a try Smile

I do take lots of medication for my health conditions, i did wonder if that could be the cause. I'll mention it to my GP next time i see him.

Many thanks Thanks

Vertical ridges happen with aging (sorry).
Horizontal ridges can be from an insult to the body, say like a physical injury, (a bang) or an illness (flu or more serious), or indeed medication.

HorsesDogsNails · 01/02/2014 23:23

As a professional Nail Technician horizontal ridges are usually caused by 'trauma' - usually leaving toenails too long so they get pressure from shoes...... Beau's Lines an also be caused by a sudden traumatic illness, like a heart attack, but are usually seen on finger nails. Habit Tic can cause horizontal ridges as well - that is a repetitive behaviour, rubbing at the base of the nail.

Finger nails grow twice as fast as toenails so physical causes will show there first. 'Damage' to toenails tends to be external.
