Upper age limit on this style of dress?

I have a dress just like this but in slightly bolder colours. I'm worried I might be too old for it.

What do you think is the age limit for it? I think I look good in it, its very flattering but I don't want to look like I'm trying to be 10 years younger than I am.

hem hem "It depends on the colours and pattern. But the fact that you're planning on putting it with black ankle boots and a biker jacket screams mid 40's trying too hard."

I probably wouldn't wear this particular dress because I would be worried that at that price it might look cheap too, but I would wear a bodcon dress with black ankle boots and a biker jacket and I am 57. "pretty" and "demure" are the compliments most often paid to me and I'm sick and tired of the bloody mutton police on here making even people in their 30's feel bad about wearing nice clothes.

Whitecat · 31/01/2014 09:34

Baaaaaaa ignore the mutton police. Wear what you want.

higgle · 31/01/2014 10:39

I do. I just feel very angry that younger women are made to feel insecure about what they can wear when style and beauty has very little to do with age.

Floisme · 31/01/2014 10:43

What is going on with Style and Beauty at the moment? Every time I look there's a new 'am I too old...?' thread and the women asking seem to be getting younger.

Oh and nice put down: 'trying too hard' Hmm So ladies, even taking an interest in how we look isn't allowed.

specialsubject · 31/01/2014 10:44

wow, a time traveller from the fifties...

if you aren't fat, wear it. It's fine!

50ShadesOfMaybe · 31/01/2014 12:23

Well said, Floisme!

If you ask me "trying too hard" is better than "not making an effort"!

duvetheaven · 31/01/2014 12:50

that will suit any age.

FrancesFarmer · 31/01/2014 13:14

This Mutton talk needs to stop - there's been way too much of it on here lately.

That dress would work on any age group. I don't get why people won't wear clothes they like because they've been on this planet longer than others!

bigTillyMint · 31/01/2014 13:47

95? If you have the confidence to look good in it, any age.

WingardiumLeveosaaa · 31/01/2014 14:24

For those of you wondering why I'm asking it's because I'm starting to wear new styles of clothes having lost 5st 2lbs.

Two years ago, before Weight Watchers and the gym I was a size 18, depressed and fat.

I'm just learning about how to dress my body in a flattering way and it's hard to know which styles are OK if you've never previously taken any interest in clothes because nothing fitted anyway.

Congratulations on losing the weight! As someone who also slimmed down a lot - although not as much as you - I'd say go for it.

It will take a while to get used to your new shape and find your new style. When your figure changes so dramatically you are starting all over again and you need to take some risks in order to be able to see your new figure for real rather than through the filter of what it used to be.

You may make a mistake or two along the way but you'll get such a kick out of wearing such different styles that it doesn't matter!

Enjoy!

burnishedsilver · 31/01/2014 15:39

I wonder if some (not all) of the recent 'mutton threads' are just fishing for compliments. Some posters get very narky if the replies are anything other than 'you look fabulous'. They don't actually want opinions.

Floisme · 31/01/2014 16:07

Thanks to Wingard and congratulations on the weight loss! I hope you enjoy your new body and have fun experimenting with new styles. You have no need to explain yourself; the people who should be doing that are the ones who think it is ok to make other women feel uncomfortable just for wearing clothes that they like.

KayHarker1 · 31/01/2014 16:12

I'm 37, size 12 and have a similar dress in aubergine. I was a bit Hmm about it at first, having lost weight too, but I think it's all about confidence. I feel good in it, and DP assures me I look good, so that's quite enough for me.

WingardiumLeveosaaa · 31/01/2014 16:32

Sorry I hadn't realised that it would look like fishing for compliments. TBH I know that it looks good on, it's very flattering it was just whether it was too young in style that I was worried about.
My dress is different from the one I linked to, it's just the closest thing to mine I could find online. Mine is from a little independent store nearby.

Well done, op. Anyone over 30 on here has a difficult time treading that thin line between being judged for being "mummsy" and being "mutton" now we have to avoid trying too hard too ! Wear your new dress with pride, sure you will look great.

Coumarin · 31/01/2014 23:20

Early 30's, size 10. I've got a similar style one from Warehouse. Not Aztec print but shorter. I wear it with biker jacket and black suede ankle boots.

I think I look good, DH thinks I look hot, my Mam liked it.

So...

talktotheface · 31/01/2014 23:37

Good god - go for it! Dress is lovely and would probably suit any age with the righ accessories.. Please don't worry about age appropriateness. If you feel good it's definitely ok!

talktotheface · 31/01/2014 23:38

And early 30's - anything goes!!

teenybash7 · 01/02/2014 08:33

WEAR WHAT YOU WANT! I just think it's terrible to worry about age rules. (31's practically a baby anyway - well it is when your next big birthday starts with a 6!)

The other big plus with a dress like that is that there's no way you'll be tempted to eat anything remotely fattening while you're wearing it! (Well done with the weight loss, that's fantastic!)
