Dressing too young?

MrsFlorrick · 30/01/2014 14:49

Is there such a thing? And am I doing it?

I turned 40 last year and I'm still wearing the same clothes I did at 30.

In some cases quite literally as I've just lost 6 stone after having two DC. Grin

I wear jeans. Mostly skinny either Paige Denim, 7 FAM. I do have a few 7FAM boot cut and skinny bootcut that I wear too.

Biker trousers out of All Saints
My jumper collection is huge. And features relatively clingy cashmere numbers anything from Pringle, Belstaff, Jigsaw, LK Bennett, Max Mara etc.

I have blazer type jackets and I have a leather biker style jacket from Mulberry.

Boots I have various knee high. ATM I mostly wear a mulberry pair, all saints ankle boot, Belstaff boots (bit military looking) and a pair of Uggs you could get a couple of years ago with the fluffy bit at the top which could also be turned over the knee.

I went into central London yesterday for a dental app and as I stood at station several women my age and a bit younger were staring at me.

The were dressed quite different to each other but also to me. Macs, black low heel boots (sort of M&S looking a bit safe looking) one in wide leg jeans other two in boot cut and all with tunic floral type tops.

I am a bit mutton???
I also have my midlife crisis pair of all saints biker leather trousers.

Pic on profile of those.

Sorry long phew. Thanks for reading.
Pls let me know as I suddenly felt perhaps I need to review my wardrobe.

I won't be offended at all so good honest MN type opinions pls. Wink

You have a great figure! I would rather be wearing your clothes than the clothes of the people at the station any day. In fact what you wear sounds very similar to what I wear, and I am 40.

dyslexicdespot · 30/01/2014 14:57

You look amazing!

bleedingheart · 30/01/2014 14:59

You look great! I don't think what you have described sounds inappropriate!

abear · 30/01/2014 15:01

You look great, I think it is those with the flowery tunics who have the problem, they were probably eyeing you with envy. Stick with the clothes that make you feel good

Mrsap · 30/01/2014 15:05

I was just going to say the same. They were probably thinking how good you looked! I do that when I see well dressed people.....just realised how it might come across tho!

Onesleeptillwembley · 30/01/2014 15:11

I don't think so. Tbh boot it are awful and now dated so maybe they were appraising you with a view to copying.

ElizabethBathory · 30/01/2014 15:13

Your wardrobe doesn't sound mutton in any way! Even if they were staring at you disapprovingly (which they prob weren't), would that make you want to go out and buy an M&S-inspired wardrobe?! I think not... I think you can tend to make safer and safer decisions if you shop according to what you think you ought to be wearing, and you end up with a dull dull wardrobe.

ElizabethBathory · 30/01/2014 15:14

Also, 6 stone? Well done!

jimjamspam · 30/01/2014 15:20

I would suggest they were staring in envy !!

MrsFlorrick · 30/01/2014 15:21

GrinGrin
Thanks everyone. I had a moment of fear.

I had gestational diabetes with both pregnancies and gained over 6 stone both times so this is my second go at losing it all again. Hmm

I didn't think I'd manage this time and get back into my old wardrobe.

But I'm so happy I have so I've been wearing everything in it without a thought.

Btw. The leather biker trousers only come out at night for special occasions I don't stand around on train stations in them during the day! Wink

Thanks for reassurance!!

I'm looking for some new dresses. What should I be looking at?

Hoping you can tell me as you dress similar to me.

Also I'm so glad I don't have to go and get my tunic inspired M&S wardrobe. I fear that but I also don't want to be a mutton.

Black low heel boots, bootcut jeans and tunics? Sounds bloody awful. Absolutely no sense of style - that's just clothes.

Your wardrobe sounds amazing.

Ignore them.

impty · 30/01/2014 15:22

Well you and me both then Smile
You look amazing.
FWIW I am about your age and wear clothes not too dissimilar from what you describe. I occasionally look at clothes in certain catalogues which drop through the letterbox and wonder whether I should embrace them now.... then I think I'm not that old yet! I suspect I never will beGrin

And 6 stone!!! Well done!

ElizabethBathory · 30/01/2014 15:24

I'm not sure what the definition of 'mutton' is, but I only ever think people are dressed too 'young' if they're wearing something too small for them, or with too much sparkle and fur (but then maybe that's more crazy than mutton).

burnishedsilver · 30/01/2014 15:27

They were staring because you looked so well.

mouses · 30/01/2014 15:37

hi if it helps, i look at people in the street to get inspiration and ideas. i tend to look without thinking im freaking them out haha! maybe they like what your wearing.

im no style icon so cant give you any advice on that front. just done a similar thread to yours asking for help.

theres so many helful people on here im sure you'll get there.
well done on your weight loss x

MrsFlorrick · 30/01/2014 17:06

Thanks again everyone. ThanksThanks

You've helped me calm down. I have feared I was for the scrap heap. The GD and associated health problems whilst pregnant and the massive weight gain etc. and obv turning 40!

I just started to feel normal again now I've lost the weight (I'm 2 lbs away from my goal weight but that's probably loose skinWink)..
And I was so happy wearing my old wardrobe again.

Phew. I don't have to join the Per Una brigade or the tunic one.

Thanks again for helping.

And if any of you who dress similarly could point me in the direction of dresses then that would be great. I could do with a couple of new ones.

I definitely know whose wardrobe I'd prefer, and it's not the low heeled safe boots, flowery tunics one! Your wardrobe sounds great.

shopafrolic · 30/01/2014 17:25

Your wardrobe sounds fab - we own some similar items and I'm 41. No need to stop being fashionable at any age.
In terms of dresses why not try Me&em? Good quality and can be dressed up or down. and the sale still seems to be on!

Whitecat · 30/01/2014 17:39

They were probably admiring your personal style and wondering whether they could pull off something similar.

MrsFlorrick · 30/01/2014 17:45

Whitcat. Thanks. Grin

Shops frolic. I've looked at me and em before but never braved it.

Going to have a look and see. Thanks.

You look great and don't sound mutton at all. My Mum is in her 50's and wears a lot of stuff that I'd wear. I think nowadays people wear what they want.

KatieScarlett2833 · 30/01/2014 19:06

You dress like me and I'm 45.
So obviously you are fabulous Grin
