To nose-stud or not to nose-stud...

Katnisscupcake · 29/01/2014 14:07

Ok, so I turn 40 in June and I would like to do something a little reckless... I know, I know, a nose-stud isn't exactly reckless, clearly I've led a very sheltered life... Smile

When I met my DH he was a massive fan of tattoos and had quite a few, so I got a very small tattoo, a pretty rose, in the small of my back. Vowed I'd never have another one (I'm a big wimp).

But since I was in my early 20s I've really liked nose-studs. Nothing big, just very tiny nose-studs (never a nose-ring). I actually think that they can look quite stylish on some people. I have a very 'normal' nose. Not too big, not too small. I had a belly-button piercing but had to take it out recently for an operation and haven't bothered to put it back in - my stomach isn't the same 'washboard'/'six-pack' tummy that I used to have since having DD!! Grin

Am I crazy?? If you have one/had one, did you have any problems with it. Do you have a backing on it that goes inside your nose (like on an earring). And the big question, how much does it hurt when you have it done?

Clearly I don't know much about them...

I work for a large blue-chip company but from home so don't see work associates very often. Is it really really crazy to be thinking about this???

I don't have one but really like small studs on people. I say go for it, life is too short not to do what you like. Plus if you hate it and take it out quickly it should heal.

Only reason I don't have one is work.

Wuxiapian · 29/01/2014 14:57

I think you'll regret it, but, as PP said, you can always remove it.

plantsitter · 29/01/2014 14:59

I had it done when 18 and it never really settled. Was gross when I had a cold too. I wouldn't do it personally, though I it looks nice.

ChablisChic · 29/01/2014 15:00

You won't know if you like it until you try, so I say go for it! If you don't like it, take it out, the hole will close over if you haven't had it in for long.

Warning - if you do have it done, don't fiddle with the back (inside your nostril). DD does this and it looks as though she's picking her nose! Not a good look.

Sleepthief · 29/01/2014 15:01

I had my nose pierced at 17, stopped wearing it some time in my 20s and put a ring back in last year at 39. I really like it - never regretted it (even through my conventional square phase). I'm a ring girl woman though. Can't really get into studs. Go for it. It will make your eyes water, though Grin

Skinheadmermaid · 29/01/2014 15:18

Go for it.
I had my nose pierced at 12, 26 now, never had any problems. I think little sparkly studs looks very cute.
I personally wear a thin gold ring.

Katnisscupcake · 29/01/2014 15:35

It's making my eyes water just thinking about it... Maybe I should get some of those stick on ones to start with to see what it will look like before I take the plunge...

Thank you all!! Smile

What about a slice of colour in your hair? I'm not the wild type but always fancy a flash of blue or violet. I work in a very conservative profession so it won't be happening any time soon.

ironmansmum · 29/01/2014 18:06

I am well over 40 and would love one! Looks great on the right people. However, the idea of having a cold puts me off!

Mum2Fergus · 29/01/2014 18:58

I had one at 35, 45 now. I've only recently taken it out (well, lost it after bout of flu and never replaced it lol). I'd say try the stick ons first, worst case if you go for and decide it's not for you it can be left to close over. I would say though that it's the most excruciating pain Ive ever felt in my life...not for the faint hearted.

Katnisscupcake · 29/01/2014 19:00

Oh goodness Mum2Fergus really????? Ooooh I'm really not sure then...

DH has said to try the magnetic ones first, a little bit worried about losing a magnet up my nose though because I do sniff... a lot... Confused

MaryLou2 - strangely enough I wouldn't feel brave enough to go for colour in my hair!! Grin

It's not sore honestly. I've had it done twice. If you managed a tattoo on your back you'll cope with this. You can also ask for numbing spray if you really can't cope.

I have a very small stud in, the back is kind of curled and is plastic so you can't tell it's there. I've had it done gor quite a while now and I don't feel it's there, can blow my nose without an issue.

Only think I will say after you have it done it will be quite sore if you knock it, one night in my sleep I caught it with my finger and the pain woke me up. That's the only time it ever hurt me.

I think you should get it done, google image the different 'studs' you can get, I recommend the flexible plastic.

WhatAFeline · 29/01/2014 19:10

I am 43, have a small silver ring in my nose. I am a professional, it has never been an issue. I don't think age is a factor.

JadziaSnax · 29/01/2014 19:12

I'm 40 and have a tiny stud in my nose, had it since I was 26. No problems and no regrets. Go for it, I think they look really nice.

JadziaSnax · 29/01/2014 19:13

The studs don't have backs on, the ones that I use have a bent wire so that they don't fall out.

Minshu · 29/01/2014 19:14

I had mine done at 18. Long time ago, but don't think it was any more painful than an ear piercing, although location did mean my eyes water Grin

At 39 I now wear a stud when I feel like it. I have some tiny stainless steel jewelled ones which are straight with a tiny bobble on the inside bit.

The only problem I would foresee is that you would have no flexibility to go without it until fully healed which could take a couple of months.

I'm approaching 40 and having the spaces between my 3 old tattoos filled with flowers Grin

AimeeDubucqdeRivery · 29/01/2014 19:15

I found it hideously painful like mum2fergus OP.

My stud fell out too after a couple of months and I couldn't get it back in, so mine was a brief dalliance with nose piercing. Would never have it done again because if the pain. Still wince thinking about it

BitOutOfPractice · 29/01/2014 19:15

I really like them myself but don't think they are suitable for a formal business environment sorry

Lagoonablue · 29/01/2014 19:17

Sorry think they look hideous but that is just opinion. If you want one then get one.

MostlyCake · 29/01/2014 19:20

I pierced my own nose at 14 with a drawing pin and bag of frozen peas ....It did hurt but I thought it was worth it! Mid 30s now and no regrets.

You can get studs which curl, sort of like a corkscrew - these hurt like crazy so avoid, avoid, avoid. I actually just use a bent stud (90 degree angle) which stays in fine but if you do catch it, the stud will come out easily.

wakemeupnow · 29/01/2014 19:21

I had mine done 20 years ago in India. I took it out when Dc were babies as they always seemed to catch it waving their little hands about. About 8 years ago I re pierced it myself by filing a point on a stud and shoving it through which was how it was done the first time round !
It didn't hurt much at all either time. The nose studs are kind of bent/ curly at the back to stay in.
I think you should definitely go for it !

MostlyCake · 29/01/2014 19:22

If you go to a piercing place it will be over in no time and you are very unlikely to end up with an infected nose like i did I blame the drawing pin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 29/01/2014 19:23

I had mine done at about 25. It's been in and out depending on mood many times since and now at 42 I put it back in before Christmas and love it. I just have a very small, subtle clear sparkly stud and I think it looks great. Wasn't especially painful at any point and I'm a big fat wimp.

Blithereens · 29/01/2014 19:37

I've got a nose ring. It's a plain steel one which hugs my nose. It has never stopped me getting a job or anything. I love it and don't feel I look like me without it. I forget it most of the time tbh! I don't dress alternativey or anything, it's just a small ring that blends in really.

I'm 32 and I plan to still have it when I'm 132!

Blithereens · 29/01/2014 19:40

Oh, but do go to a professional piercing place and DO NOT have it done with gun. Any artist worth their salt will do it with a needle.

It doesn't hurt particularly but it does make your eye water so wear waterproof mascara! Grin
