Wedding is morning suits - what should 5yo ds wear?

Suddengeekgirl · 29/01/2014 10:04

SIL is getting married.

Dh will need a morning suit as she wants all family in one. So he will be hiring one from Moss Bros I think.

I will need a hat I guess.
Dd is flower girl so she will be in whatever SIL decides on.

Ds is 5yo. What does he wear?
A boys morning suit?
A normal suit?
A shirt and tie?

Normally I'd ask SIL but after dh put his foot in it and laughed about the morning suits I would rather not appear to be rocking the boat/ making a fuss! Confused

What time of year is it? How about a white linen shirt (or one with a slight pattern), a waistcoat, and trousers?

dontcallmemam · 29/01/2014 20:16

I'm not an expert but if it's a summer wedding I love little boys in smart shorts and a crisp short sleeved shirt. I'm not a fan of children in adult style clothes. Maybe not trainers though.

PoshPaula · 29/01/2014 20:19

I agree with don'tcall I am getting married this summer, and my little boys will be in longish shorts, shirts and waistcoats. Sandals on their feet.

Suddengeekgirl · 29/01/2014 20:22

Wedding is in June. I think quite a lot of their friends will be in morning suits. SIL and her DF are very country, horsey, shooting types so I think it will be rather posh!

I don't like boys in adult clothes either dontcallmemam. Ds will be wearing his school trousers (in surprisingly good nick) a aeroplane patterned shirt and tie for a wedding next month. I know it won't be smart enough for SIL's in June.

Are there etiquette rules about what dc wear at weddings? Confused

I can remember being 5 and being MASSIVELY envious of the grownups' suits at weddings. Looking back at the wedding photos I'm sort of wondering if it's too late to report that FUCKING SAILOR SUIT as child abuse. (It was the 1970s, apparently this was considered acceptable.)

LatinForTelly · 29/01/2014 20:55

Jo Jo Maman Bebe used to do smart linen trousers and nehru (sp?) collared shirts which they marketed as little boys' formal wear. What do you think of that sort of thing? Not sure if they are still in business mind, and I think their last clothes size is 4-5, so if your DS is tall, he might be out of them.

That sort of thing can look nice for little boys at summer weddings though. Not too mini-adult.

LatinForTelly · 29/01/2014 20:59

Oh yes, they are still there, and they go up to age 5-6 here

MrsLettuce · 29/01/2014 22:21

shirtlinen waistcoat
linen shorts

MrsLettuce · 29/01/2014 22:30

Urhg posted to soon

a print shirt this, this or this with nice, traditional linen waistcoat and
shorts would work really well. Formal black shoes, white socks. The bus shirt is my favourite but the mopeds are great too.

Suddengeekgirl · 30/01/2014 06:08

Thanks for the suggestions! :)
Unfortunately anything from monsoon won't open properly on my phone - just jumps to the mobile site home page. Hmm
I'm not massively keen on cream on ds - he's blonde and it often makes him look a bit sallow iyswim. Confused
Sadly he will probably be too big for jojo maman by then - he's already wearing some age 6 stuff!

I think I might find some pics of possible options and ask ds. I managed to talk to SIL about it and she's not too bothered what he's in so will let him choose and let SIL veto anything she doesn't like.

Ah yes, the monsoon site can be really annoying!

Product names were:
Eddie Elephant In The City Print Shirt
Boris Badger Print Shirt
Nathan Linen Waistcoat
Nathan Linen Shorts
there was also a white shirt with fine line mopeds which I can't find just now

MrsLettuce · 30/01/2014 07:48

That'd be the: Moped Print Shirt

intheround · 30/01/2014 08:00

Don't forget Matalan. The quality isn't too bad. We had to pick up a waistcoat set at short notice once and I thought it would be rubbish but I was surprised.

DS1 was 5 when it was my SIL's wedding. Thatw as in December, but DS wore plain navy cords (from Jojo I think, but M&S always do plain navy chinos or something like that), a navy and white gingham shirt and a navy knitted tank top. The shirt and tank top were from Jasper Conran at Debenhams.

If it were me, I'd avoid linen for my DS because I know that it would look shabby and creased within an hour or so of him wearing it, and well before any photos were taken!

What about a gingham shirt (maybe red and white? Next tend to have things like that in their summer collection) and 3/4 length trousers or longish shorts in the colour that matches the gingham, and then canvas shoes? I am a huge fan of little boys in matching colours as I think they look so cute. But I'm not a fan of suits and linen waistcoats and neru styles for little boys.

I have somr lovely photos of DS in a red and white small check shirt, red shorts and some red canvas shoes, and very similar ones of him in exactly the same combo but in vavy and white! Its a look that I must gravitate towards!

wickedfairy · 30/01/2014 09:19

I got my sons suits from Monsoon - they are lovely. DS1 (7) is pale grey with white shirt and waistcoat and a little grey tie with elephants on itSmile

DS2 (toddler) has a grey but slight darker, sort of tweed pattern - waistcoat and grandad collar white shirt. They both look seriously smart and very cool.

DS1 is made up with his grown up suitGrinGrin

Grotbagstwin · 30/01/2014 09:21

M and S have some good stuff, we bought my ds a tweed waistcoat and trousers with shirt and tie for £28, doesn't look too formal but very smart still, he won't be wearing the tie.

Suddengeekgirl · 30/01/2014 09:34

I think it's the thought that most of the guests will be in morning suits - all SIL's family have been told they need them. BIL to be's side all have them already from their horsey pursuits. Their friends are all very horsey too/ well to do so I think they will probably follow suit.

Ds and dd are the only children going so I need to balance their comfort (not moaning all day) and keeping up appearances. Confused

The patterned and gingham shirts are what I'd chose but I'm not sure they'll look right in photos iyswim.

Might have to spend some time on Pinterest looking at wedding pics and how small boys are dressed in similar situations....

Zara have some very nice plain, collarless shirts that'd also work well with the shorts and waistcoat, but, yes, pinteresting about a bit sounds like a very good idea.
