College lecturer - new job. But what do I wear?

WhereAndHow · 27/01/2014 23:44

Not worked for some time, but soon to start a part time job lecturing at a FE college.

I don't wear dresses due to not liking to show my legs. Tend to wear jeans at home (obviously not suitable) and my business suits are far too smart and businessy.

Dress me please. I'm 5ft 7ins and a size 12. Late 40s. Darkish hair, palish skin. Devoid of style of know how. Have limited funds.

As you have limited funds, could you wear some of the trousers from your work suits with more casual tops ?

Mrswellyboot · 27/01/2014 23:48

Have a look at the slacks on H&M website. I think they would be ideal. There is also a nice wrap aqua blouse.

dizhin79 · 28/01/2014 01:03

fat face, white stuff, tkmaxx etc.... smart causal but still a bit interesting

NigellasDealer · 28/01/2014 01:17

wooden clogs, flared faded jeans, a woollen poncho in rainbow colours, and an Afghan hat

Monty27 · 28/01/2014 01:19

College lecturer friends of mine are very casually dressed. (I'm not a student).

RonaldMcDonald · 28/01/2014 01:20

I think jeans are fine

tiredandsadmum · 28/01/2014 01:37

Watching with interest as I am teacher training at an FE college. I wear jeans all the time - I'm in my late 40's and fin d them smart and comfortable. I wore suits for years (ex city banker) and just don't feel they would be suitable!

bettykt · 28/01/2014 06:56

No jeans. Leggings, tunic top and ankle boots, 7/8 trousers ballet flats and blouse/top. Trousers and jumper.

LaTrucha · 28/01/2014 07:13

I do similar and wear slim leg trousers like this, silk blouses like this or this, , ballet pumps or courts and smart jumpers like this.

It feels wearable, smartish and easy.

I do wear dresses and skirts too, though.

LaTrucha · 28/01/2014 07:16

sorry, that last link didn't work. It was a scoop neck jumper.

You would be fine with leggings tunics and boots, or wideleg trousers, even a smart pair of dark blue jeans.

Congratulations on the new job!

3bunnies · 28/01/2014 07:19

bettykt must be one of my students - that's what I wear! As long as you are reasonably smart on the first day you can see what everyone else is wearing. Good luck with the job.

boomoohoo · 28/01/2014 07:43

I've just been in FE. My lecturers wore everything from suits to jeans and trainers. Ironically the one who wore a suit always looked scruffiest (a man). One was very fashionable and stylish, others just casual. I think u should wear what makes you most comfortable. Congrats on the job by the way Smile

callamia · 28/01/2014 08:03

I teach (HE) in jeans and converse sometimes.
I mainly attempt to wear skirts and tops (I like boat neck tops the best), and dresses (sweater dresses and flat boots), but some days being a bit more casual is fine.

Congratulations on the new job!

KristinaM · 28/01/2014 10:38

Well obviously standards have gone downhill since I was a university teacher!!! We had one member of staff who wore jeans and a denim jacket and the students complained about how he was dressed!!!

Though I accept that smart jeans women with boots and stylish top are rather better than faded and torn double denim

slug · 28/01/2014 11:07

I taught in FE for 12 years. I rarely wore anything other than jeans. All those pockets to carry keys, spare pens etc.

Seriously, if there isn't a dress code, dress for comfort. Bear in mind you will be in classrooms of differing temperatures, you will be on your feet all day and teaching hormonally challenged adolescents.

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 28/01/2014 11:25

I think you need to start a collection or corduroy

wishinwaitinhopin · 28/01/2014 11:47

I have worked in FE as a lecturer for ten years now. Wear just below the knee pencil skirts. Dotty ps do some great stretchy ones. Then a plain t-shirt type top (next do some great smart ones) and a smart suit like jacket. It's smart but not too office like. And you can do whatever you want as far as colour ... And be as adventurous as you like.
The jeans debate - I wouldn't wear to work as think it doesn't look professional. It's different for uni lecturers as once youve got a PhD I suppose it doesnt matter what you wear. My uni lecturers wore big jumpers with holes in them. Lol. Good luck x

PoshPaula · 28/01/2014 12:07

No jeans. They might look good but they do not look smart.

Everything that betty said.

HelloBoys · 28/01/2014 12:34

what about a sweater dress? Hush have some nice ones see their sales.

bettykt · 28/01/2014 12:41

3bunnies I was a college lecturer Grin and hoping to get back into it and that's what I would wear.

morethanpotatoprints · 28/01/2014 12:51

Smart casual was the rule at my last job in FE.
As you said no jeans but maybe smart trousers and nice shirts/tops.
I would also advise lots of plain stuff as people seem to remember stuff with patterns and you get to the point where you think people will notice you wearing the same thing.

Good luck with the job, you are braver than me Grin
