Thoughts on this dress (for work or smartish weekends)

Considering this dress

www.jaeger.co.uk/Belted%20Shirt%20Dress/630180G,en_GB,pd.html?dwvar_630180G_color=05500&dwvar_630180G_size=6&start=1&cgid=womens-sale

I like jaeger stuff and while it seems a bit pricey for a cotton shirt dress, I suspect it will be good quality and hang well.

I normally got for black, not sure about it being navy.

Any thoughts?

I really like it!

What size are you?

BritabroadinAsia · 25/01/2014 15:22

Really like the colour, and am sure it will be well made... but I don't love the fullness of the skirt. Might it look at bit mumsy? I prefer a shirt dress to be cut more straight, with a belt to accentuate the waist, but essentially to look like an elongated shirt.

Perhaps I can't get beyond imagining what it would look like on me (entirely wrong for my body shape), so if you are taller than 5'5" and not as full of hip it could work?

pyjamasatlunch · 25/01/2014 15:25

YES!!! I think it is very good value for money. The thing is with shirt dresses the quality of the material MUST be good and fairly heavy and the cut must be effortless and give you a feminine shape or they just look horrible. This ticks all the boxes.

As for navy - I prefer it to black - navy has a timeless sophistication while black generally looks a little sad and like you are being too safe!

BikeRunSki · 25/01/2014 15:26

I like it apart from the pockets on the boobs. They would put me off. Like the colour though. There was a thread about a short sleeved version of that dress in the summer, the general feeling was pretty positive.

HermioneWeasley · 25/01/2014 15:27

Ah, Britabroad, I am 5'5 and pear shaped (12 top and 14 bottom) but small waist.

I am pear shaped and so I look pear shaped - will this be a hideous mistake? I thought the fuller/a line skirt shape would skim me rather than accentuate?!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 25/01/2014 15:29

It is not cotton, it is 100% polyester according to the product details. So, that would put me off. That and the fact it could easily make all but the slimmest look like a scak of potatoes.

bakingaddict · 25/01/2014 15:46

I think you need to be tall to pull this one off and on some-one 5'5 and pear-shaped I think it might be a bit mumsy. Agree with Brit, think the skirt is just too full

BritabroadinAsia · 25/01/2014 15:50

Clearly we were separated at birth, Hermione... although we are the same size I actually no waist, so it would definitely look better on you!

That said, am still not convinced. And the 100% polyester adds to my unease. Sorry. I think you are keen, though?

mirpuppet · 25/01/2014 15:57

Try it on.

I am around your size & height & pear shaped and I find that all my shirt dresses make me look bigger than I am.

Perhaps I have never found the right one -- but I'm starting to suspect that they do not suit my shape.

HermioneWeasley · 25/01/2014 16:28

100% polyester has put me off. For the best part of £100 I expect natural fibers!

I like shirt dresses but I don't like the length of this one - it makes it look very frumpy. I imagine it would be even longer on you than the model and not a flattering length

FamiliesShareGerms · 25/01/2014 20:43

I was about to say it's polyester so I wouldn't. I've got an earlier version of it, though, and it is good for work but not really outside work.

EdithWeston · 25/01/2014 20:50

The general shape is suitable for work, and navy is more versatile than black.

But there's no way I'd wear polyester to work (and probably wouldn't wear it anywhere) and no way that pockets over boobs look good if you want to be taken seriously (unless your boobs are very small).

sugar4eva · 25/01/2014 22:09

I have to confess a liking for good quality polyester: I have Hobbs dress in it and it drapes well , washes like a dream and the colour stays true . Plus I find it rather retro!

theincrediblealfonso · 25/01/2014 22:14

i think it's really nice. i'd buy it myself if i wasnt a short arse!

Quangle · 25/01/2014 22:16

I've tried this on. It used to come in cream too, I think. If its the same one it's a really heavy almost old fashioned crepe de chine type fabric which I love. Agree with sugar4ever on that. It feels lovely and retro and sort of 40s ish which is my ideal look. I didn't buy the dress though - Skirt slightly too full and the belt was a bit dressing gowny - would have preferred a neat buckle belt.

MadBusLady · 25/01/2014 22:26

Hm, I'm a pear and that would make me look like a house, I prefer a neat slinky shape down bottom with a fuller or more colourful upper half. But I'm aware I seem to be in a minority. What shape do you usually wear on your lower half?

Cristiane · 25/01/2014 22:31

Polyester! If only it were cotton/ viscose.. it will be smelly after a couple of wears I think. it's sweaty and doesn't breathe

I must be an old gimmer but fabric is essential and you are better with a silk./ viscose/ cotton mix (and honestly it's luck of the draw and never seems more expensive, you just have to look and look in the shops)

ToysRLuv · 25/01/2014 22:59

Awful. Sorry!

burnishedsilver · 25/01/2014 23:45

I like it, but not in polyester.

MusicalEndorphins · 25/01/2014 23:58

Very frumpy, I'd take a pass on that one.

feelingvunerable · 26/01/2014 07:14

It looks like a rain mac to me-
Sorry!

Ladycurd · 26/01/2014 07:42

I have 4 of this dress in diff colours bit.ly/1fmZ273 but the capped sleeve version (see all versions in her shop). Incredibly flattering for all shapes (only dress I can wear). They are cheap and great quality, only downside is the ironing!

Ladycurd · 26/01/2014 07:42

bit.ly/1fmZ273 hope that link works

Stokey · 26/01/2014 07:52

I think it's a little dull. I bought a DvF wrap shirt dress in the sales for £ 160, think it was the Jeanne. I would go for something like that instead, if you could stretch the budget.
