Am I nuts?..... Hair appt tomorrow, could do with hairdressers advice!

So at the beginning of last Dec I had a bleach bath & colour at the hairdressers to get my hair from a med brown to a brightish coppery red.

It's now faded to a nice light auburny ginger. Iv'e got about half an inch of what looks like light brown roots.

I want to go just a couple of shades lighter. So on they way back from the dentist this morning, I popped I to my local salon ( as you do!) & booked another bleach bath! They only charge £10!

My hair isn't in brilliant condition. But the hairdresser who did my hair last time said its not that bad either. The only thing is I did whack a blonde dye on it about 3 weeks ago hoping it would lighten it, needless to say it didn't make any difference.

I'm I likely to end up with yellow hair after a bleach bath? My hubby would go absolutely apeshit if he knew that I've booked an appt, we're short on cash this month, although if all goes well & it only costs £10 he won't mind, it's only if it goes bad & I end up having to have another colour put on & pay nearly £50, he'll hit the roof!

Am I better of leaving it for a while? What to do?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is what is the likely outcome of a bleach bath on coloured light gingery hair?!!! Will I almost definitely need a colour applied after or will I get away with just the bleach bath? I know it's difficult to say without a crystal ball but any advice welcome! Unless of course my best bet would be to leave my hair well alone for now!

Not much help on the colour front as never had reds only blonde but I just wanted to advise caution. I ruined my hair a few years ago with too much bleach too close. Please be careful.

HaveAGoodDay · 23/01/2014 19:36

Ok thanks, I know they don't use a high percentage of bleach, I think it was something like 9% vol or something if that makes sense? And they mix it with shampoo. I'm reall in two minds as to whether to go ahead or not!

I'm not a hairdresser but have mucked about with red dyes and bleach a lot ( invariably end up going back to light blonde after wasting too much money !!)

What exactly did the hairdresser say when you booked the bleach bath ? Did she give you any indication of the possible outcome colour wise ? I've always been under the impression that to get rid of red you had to first strip the hair of the old dye and then bleach and tone the hair (to get anywhere near blonde)

If you do end up with "yellow" hair it's not necessarily the end of the world. Rather than apply an actual dye you might get away with using a good purple shampoo (Touch of Silver is pretty good and available at Boots) which will cancel out the brassy yellow tones. The only thing you need to look out for is the purple colour staining the ends of your hair if they are very dry as any damaged areas will soak up the purple in the shampoo.

I've done the above and then re-dyed myself a few weeks later with Nice n Easy or L'Oreal off the shelf dye to get a more even blonde colour. At least that way your hair is getting a few weeks rest. And condition, condition, condition ! Argan oil is pretty good but can be pricey. I really like this leave in conditioner www.boots.com/en/Tresemme-Keratin-Smooth-Heat-Protection-Shine-Spray-200ml_1285848/

Thanks Cannot for your reply. The lady who booked my appt basically said the bleach bath will/should lighten my hair a couple of shades. But difficult to say whether or not I would need a colour after or not. I'm not wanting to be blonde blonde anyway, perhaps a strawberry blonde or something. Oh I don't know. I think I'll what the hairdresser says when I go in tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Morning Have.
I'm a hairdresser well I was before DD and you should definitely not be having a bleach bath on your roots. There is absolutely no need, especially if you just want the. Copper colour again.

Because your roots are "Virgin" in that they've grown through and not been coloured, the use of a "tint" (permanent dye) will be fine to take you back to that original colour, roots and ends will just be done separately.

Tints can lift your own colour 2 shades and then inject as much or as little copper tone into said lifted hair as you want.

Hope this helps :)

TessTackle · 24/01/2014 08:08

Oh I just read your next post.

What an idiot Blush

I really wouldn't recommend a bleach bath so soon.
I certainly wouldn't do one on any of my clients.

There's only so much your hair can take.

Blamenargles · 24/01/2014 08:42

You will still need to colour because you will still have roots.

With stripping any colour you cannot guarantee what colour it will go and that it will lift even. The ends of your hair will have a greater build up of colour so tend to stay darker.

Even if you don't need a colour on you probably will need a toner on. Which they probably would want to do straight away, your hair will have gone through lots of strong chemical treatments in a short length of time.

Also make sure you tell them you have put a blonde on top.

Some home colours have lots of metallic salts in which react with bleach.

You may also benefit from having the ends cut after.

Hope it goes well

I think it's unlikely that you will get out of the hairdressers having paid only £10. Do they charge extra to wash and blow dry it?

HaveAGoodDay · 24/01/2014 12:50

Well I've had it done. It looks okay, lighter which is what i was aiming for & there wasn't any need for a colour over the top, so I was lucky. My hair is, however quite dry on the ends, which is to be expected, so intensive conditioning treatments were advised & to be left overnight to maximise results.

I was naive thinking i could just get away with paying the £10 though - they charged an extra £15 for the blow dry in top! Which if I'd of known about (didn't charge me that last time - but I had a colour applied as well last time so perhaps that was included) I would've gladly walked the two minute journey home with wet hair!
