in between colours how to hide greys?

Newhere2 · 21/01/2014 13:48

Hello, I've met the point now where greys seem to appear after a week of having my hair coloured (yes it grows fast) and really it needs doing every 3 weeks, but its so expensive. Of course the greys are all around my part and hair line Grin

Does anyone have anyways they try to keep greys masked in between colour treatments?

I read somewhere about some a aveda shampoo and conditioners helping give temporary coverage.

Thx

Buy this

I've just used it an hour ago, brilliant results, takes ten mins. You just brush on the dye using the brush applicator included, I did my parting and a tiny bit at my temples. Then shampoo out ten mins later.

Product called Color Wow root cover up is make up for hair - works really well

AngieM2 · 21/01/2014 15:16

I put a boots botanics semi-permanent color on in-between hairdresser visits meaning I can go about 8-10 weeks between professional coloring.

AnnabelleDarling · 21/01/2014 15:27

What colour is your hair?

Aveda do colour depositing shampoo and conditioner, in different shades. I use Black Malvasia to tone down any orange in my dark hair but it wouldn't conceal my greys.

Colour wow do a powder colour for roots. Batiste dry shampoo comes in different shades and will temporarily cover greys, or Revlon do a crayon type thing called Tween Time, I think, which you can use to 'colour in' greys.

EasterHoliday · 21/01/2014 15:29

Gilly how do you know which colour to get?

Newhere2 · 22/01/2014 09:46

Thanks :)

The Clairol product looks great. I've got date brown hair so I guess I'll just go for the darkest brown.

Tony and guy salons sell a spray product that temporarily covers greys. My stylist raves about it but I haven't tried it yet.

Passthecake30 · 22/01/2014 10:36

I use the loreal root touch up, in the dark blonde, just half the tub at a time

Passthecake30 · 22/01/2014 10:38

Sorry - not loreal - clairol, as pp

BuzzardBird · 22/01/2014 10:45

Tween time only seems to be available in the US? It does sound a good product. My greys pop up again after only a week usually and don't really want to keep putting dyes on my hair every week.

Anyone know if this product can be bought in UK?

AnnabelleDarling · 22/01/2014 10:48

buzzard You can get it from Amazon or ebay

Newhere2 · 22/01/2014 10:48

Buzzard, I see you can get tween time on amazon uk. Do you have to do that every day? (or every wash)

I have a similar problem

I get grays in the area next to the ears (if that makes sense) nowhere else.

I used to have a great hair colorist who'd colour whole head with perm or semi perm color then do highlights. now they hardly do that.

the highlights don't catch there of course.

Would I be best off doing what you guys do above? if ever I mention the Clairol Root Touch Up to an old colorist I had she shrieked and said don't do it!

I never know what to do but if I want hair say in ponytail I don't want the greys showing thanks a lot!

WallyBantersJunkBox · 22/01/2014 11:02

I have this too, I always make sure my hairdresser covers the grey at the sides of my head really well, I check in the mirror and tell him to put more on if i'm not satisfied. Grin

I don't tie my hair back for the last 2 weeks before my next treatment, and I find keeping my hair clean at the roots really does help the appearance, if it's a bit oily then they grey looks so much worse.

I change my parting throughout the 6 weeks too, as I was finding that the grey seemed to show through my usual parting much quicker.

I've tried every conceivable touch up product, lipstick applicators etc but they've never looked right. The most successful thing for me was to have my main color dyed a sort of nude shade, and have highlights in the areas where the grey is strongest. The grey blends with the color better, so it doesn't look as "jarring" at the roots. With this method I've gone from coloring every 4 weeks, up to 8 weeks.

BuzzardBird · 22/01/2014 11:06

Out of stock as far as I can see. Will keep searching, thanks.

OP in case you get tempted by the L'oreal Preference re-usable colour in the can, don't bother, it is the biggest waste of £11 on the market. Does not colour anything.

BuzzardBird · 22/01/2014 11:09

Oh, have found it now on Amazon, have also found something called "cover your gray" (sorry US spelling of grey) which is less than £3 a stick! Has anyone tried this?

WallyBantersJunkBox · 22/01/2014 11:10

That's the lipstick I've mentioned - tis shite.

Leaves a blobby dark lump of stuck hair on your scalp.

Ambassadoryouarespoilingme · 22/01/2014 11:13

hi I've got Tween Time from Amazon - its only about £6. Its great, like a wax crayon. My hair is mid brown with blondish highlights (following the radical bleach bath to remove the years of black dye!) and I bought the light brown Tween Time. It stays on until the next hairwash. Its not a perfect match but enough to tone down those damn glistening silver roots which come through about 10 days after my colour has been done.
The only thing you have to watch is that it can rub off a bit on your pillowcase, but if you only use it on your hairline at the front and top of head this doesn't matter too much. At least it doesnt come off in the rain!

BuzzardBird · 22/01/2014 11:17

Sorry Wally cross posted. I see now that the reviews are dire. All has to be imported from US too. Strange they do not sell these products in UK?

Passthecake30 · 22/01/2014 11:22

helloboys my hairdressers have never objected to me using root touch up, tough luck if they did

ThisLittlePiggyStayedHome · 22/01/2014 11:23

Bumble and Bumble do a coloured dry shampoo spray that is instant and really effective. My hair is brown but the 'blondish' one blends perfectly. I use the Clairol root touch up generally, but always have a can of the Bumble and Bumble stuff around in case of unexpected night out, visitors, photos being taken etc! It's a bit expensive but lasts a long time. You can get it on Amazon as well as at some salons.

ThisLittlePiggyStayedHome · 22/01/2014 11:25

Just checked Amazon, it's called Bumble and Bumble hair powder, not dry shampoo :)

HelloBoys · 22/01/2014 14:14

thanks so much to everyone on this thread....

I tend to sadly be dictated to by hairdressers (no more!) so it's good to hear from real women who use what the F they want (!) and get great results. will be buying the touch up and B&B spray too.

Smile
smellslikemeanspirit · 22/01/2014 14:49

I use root touch up, and the tween time til I go back to the hairdressers-both are great but found that last time the root touch up didn't take as well, which may have been due to using tween time! Can't win!

WallyBantersJunkBox · 22/01/2014 14:56

Buzzard I have an American hairdresser in Switzerland.ConfusedGrin

He gave me a free one but it is literally like rubbing a brown lipstick on your head! Because of my highlights it brings more attention to the root, not less.

The others mentioned might be better if you can get a color match?
