Hi all

After some professional colour advice please.
My basic question is - can I put a blonde colour over previously dyed red hair??
I'm not trying to go lighter, just get rid of the red as it fades so quickly and is a nightmare to keep up with!

I'm naturally a light mousy brown/dark blonde and have used Loreal Majirel 7.46 all over about 6 weeks ago and pretty much faded to really light ginge.y

Can I now stick another 7 on it, say a 7.3? Or will I need to go to to a 6??
I really don't want to have to go too dark

I've googled this and have heard you need to use a colour eliminator or stripper which sounds like it could go wrong!!!

All advice appreciated, thanks

Hi, I'm not a hairdresser but have faffed about with my hair a fair bit changing back and forward from blonde to red and then back to blonde.

You said you're not trying to go lighter - what colour are you wanting to achieve ? Back to your natural colour ?

Even if the colour appears to have faded to the naked eye there will probably still be a lot of colour in your hair if it was only done 6 weeks ago. To get rid of any red I've always had to strip the colour (either colour B4 you can buy in Boots or one of the professional ones you can buy from Sallys). After stripping it you could then try your 7.3 - think this is a dark blonde colour ?

Do you have a Sallys or salon services near you ? I've always found them pretty helpful so you could always ask instore...

Thank you! Never used a colour stripper before, can I literally put the blonde tint on straight after using it or do I have to wait?

Red is a bugger to get rid off. I wouldn't use a blonde as any golden tones will go orange.

I had to use colour before and then immediately put on a neutral brown to stop it picking up any red. Then lots of super conditioning treatments!!

Once it stopped disintegrating I started having highlights again to lighten it.

I will NEVER go red again!!!

From reading your post my hair is at a similar stage as yours unoriginal.

Colour strippers/removers can work well, however, are quite drying & can leave your hair very dry & gingery, great if you're after a gingery colour.

I needed to lighten my hair from a med brown to a gingery colour & when a colour remover failed I had a bleach bath at my local salon, it's a gentle way to lighten your hair & surprisingly it only cost a tenner. The condition wasn't affected too much afterwards & I had a colour applied after, you can't apply a permanent colour after you've put a colour remover on your hair.

I'm wanting to go a bit lighter now, like a strawberry blonde, but I'm getting my hair in better condition first then I may have another bleach bath done in a couple of months just to give it that bit of lift.

Oops, I forgot I'm not a hairdresser, just mess about with my hair too much!

I'm confused Confused - what colour are you trying to achieve ? Back to your natural colour ? Did you put the Majirel on "virgin" hair (i.e hair that had not previously been coloured ? )

If you're wanting to get back to your mousy brown/dark blonde then I would pop into Sallys or Salon services and help them match a colour as close as possible to your natural colour. Get the colour B4 to strip out the last of the red in your hair and as long as your hair isn't in terrible condition just go ahead and use your mousy brown/dark blonde shade. (I'm pretty sure it says in the colour b4 instructions that you can dye your hair immediately after using it) I would dry my hair first though and see it in natural light to check that all the red it out first. I've stripped red from my hair loads of times and then dyed straight after. You need to make sure all of the colour stripper is completely washed out though or it will cock up the next colour your applying. Luckily I have very short hair so any mistakes are easily rectified...
