Organic or natural hair dye

Having become sensitized to normal hair dye, can you recommend a non itchy, mid - dark brown colour. I don't mind gold in it but hate red. Used to use Superdrug's Sensations but they've changed the formula and now it's shite.

Only semi or demi permanent please. Thanks.

Sanotint is great I've been using it for a while

chockbic · 21/01/2014 13:28

Is that a semi dye?

Annabelannabel · 22/01/2014 13:24

Actually it's permanent but I think they do a semi perm as well. I get it from tulips online. I hope you find one you are happy ewith.

WhereIsMyHat · 22/01/2014 13:50

You can use indigo to dye your hair balck, if your mix henna and indigo you can get dark brown or you can henna first and then use indigo.

WhereIsMyHat · 22/01/2014 13:51

Sorry, those are permanent. I need to read the OP more carefully next time!

chockbic · 22/01/2014 15:35

Thanks for the replies :)

Am wondering if a temporary or 6 wash colour would work but do have stubborn grey.

Isn't it a FAFF?!

OP posts:
Annabelannabel · 22/01/2014 20:01

Yes it is a major faff. I've found that semi permanent just don't cover grey at all, so I ute sanotint permanent dye and I've just bought a tween time crayon to cover up roots, was recommended on here actually

chockbic · 23/01/2014 14:57

Thanks anna x

Does the Daniel Field colour cover grey or at least blend it?

OP posts:
Annabelannabel · 24/01/2014 09:15

Sorry I've never used a Daniel field dye

chockbic · 24/01/2014 16:01

OK appreciate the reply.

Think I might give the sanotint a go. What can possibly go wrong?!

I tried Daniel Field water colours last month and was really pleased with the result. Good grey coverage, natural looking colour and didn't get the haystack effect with my hair that I sometimes get with home dyes. It lasted about 4 weeks - I swim regularly so semi permanent dyes don't last long for me.

EarSlaps · 25/01/2014 08:44

Yes, I just came on to recommend Daniel Field as well. I have been using henna and indigo, which I really liked but I found it hard to tone down the red without going too dark. Also, I struggled to find the time to do it.

I used Daniel Field a few days ago and was very impressed. No itchy burning feel or eye watering smell. I went for a 'dark blonde' colour- I am mid to dark brown with a few thousand greys. The colours come up dark so now the greys are a very light brown and the rest of my hair is shiny. It looks nice and natural.

A couple of stubborn greys remained, but I used to have that with regular dye. Time will see how well it lasts.

Ring them up for advice- I found them really helpful. Make sure you go to the proper site as well- the Daniel Field Mail Order one.

Hi Naturtint from holland & Barrett doesn't have so many chemicals in it. And there is no stink at all.

chockbic · 26/01/2014 15:48

Thank you ladies :)

I don't mind my hair looking dark, I mean not like Elvis or anything, but a natural dark brown is OK.

I've seen the Walnut shade on DF site. That is in the mid brown range.

Am trying to stay away from permanent dyes because of the roots and more damage to the hair.

Lush Henna Grin
Beautiful brown hair colour, shine, good for my hair, cost next to nothing.
Love it.

chockbic · 26/01/2014 15:59

Interesting Confused

How easy is the henna to apply? Also can it leave the grey sparklers orange?

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 26/01/2014 16:12

Ha!
I knew I'd reel you in Wink.

I use Caca brun from Lush (yes, stupid name) and get a 'warm' brown - if the sun is just at the right angle my drier ends look a bit chestnutty but I am not at all a red head and I've had people disbelieve me when I said it was henna I used. I'm almost 48 and have some greys, but no orange hairs, I don't think.

It's easy enough to use.
Basically you pour water just gone off the boil over it, wait a bit until the blocks dissolve (I poke them with my designated henna spoon) and to 'develop' the colour more you can put it in a bain marie for 20 min (I sometimes skip this).
I have shoulder length hair and just kind of plonk it on on dry hair in the same way as I used to commercial hair dyes (I don't bother with a brush).
I leave it on for a few hours, but one hour can be enough. Then wash it out, several times - it makes a mess in my bathtub but I just shower it out afterwards.

It has a very distinctive smell, quite like wet soil - I like it Smile. And I love what it has done for the texture of my hair.

Lush henna is pressed in blocked (like chocolate bars) and the staff are knowledgable. I'd do a patch test on the inside of you elbow and a strand test on your hair before I'd commit to the whole head.

chockbic · 26/01/2014 16:15

Right it sounds like a bit of a pain to be honest.

I like to just slop something on then rinse it off :lazy:

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 26/01/2014 16:37

It is a faff, but less so than sitting at the hairdresser's for hours and then pay ££ for the privilege.
And better than a worsening contact allergy.... Wink
Brown hair dyes are The Worst for allergies and it gets worse with each exposure so stay well clear.

chockbic · 26/01/2014 17:31

Oh I've tried the professional colours too and they also give me The Itch.

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 26/01/2014 17:32

PPD is in virtually all dark hair dyes

milktraylady · 26/01/2014 21:27

This one has no rescorcinol (sp?) and no stink, worth a try?

Have a look on www.hairdyeforum.com they mainly have unnatural colours. Theres a semi perm brand which they sell called Adore that has a lovely range of natural colours. Have a look at the pics
