White Stuff clothing - all that??!

After seeing many on MN singing the praises of WHite Stuff clothes I finally had a look at the White Stuff section in John Lewis today and...

What the heck? The clothes were all sludgy coloured, shirts looked stretched out and worn, fabrics looked over washed and nubbly. It all looked crunchy and sloppy styles -- all a bit like what I might have worn as a grad student in 1992.

So have I missed something? Perhaps John Lewis' selection wasn't very good or White Stuff aren't having a good season? To be fair I love Toast clothes and the Toast stuff on display at John Lewis also looked shite!

I got a really nice velvet skirt there in the sale. It is quite a muted palette of stuff but nice I think.

MillyRules · 20/01/2014 00:23

Look at White Stuff site and see if you still feel the same.

williaminajetfighter · 20/01/2014 00:28

I shall check out the website and see. Was just a wee bit disappointed on first glance.

I don't get it either, but I have decided that the slightly apologetic and twee style of clothing sold by White Stuff, Boden and Joules is often bought by people who want to look as middle class as possible, lest there be any confusion on the part of anybody looking at them.

Financeprincess · 20/01/2014 00:42

...that and those wretched floral wellies!

AlfAlf · 20/01/2014 00:50

You're right, a lot their clothes are murky-coloured and shapeless. Some nice accessories though.

plentyofsoap · 20/01/2014 01:22

I have had a couple of very nice dresses from there, although the last top I got was very poor quality and has put me off.

Floisme · 20/01/2014 07:19

To be fair, I still like the colours - they do a lot of plums and purples that suit me - it's the styles that I hate; they're so droopy and dreary, although I have just bought a shirt there in stretchy cotton, very fitted. Agree that the quality is poor now. It's a shame as I remember when they just had a couple of shops in Cornwall plus mail order and at that time, they used beautiful fabrics that washed and lasted really well. I think they've been going downhill ever since they hit the high street.

I find white stuff size up too big, I am a size 10 in old money but their 10 seem to be huge on me. Last year I bought a lovely button through tunic dress but can only wear it with a belt as it looks like a sack otherwise. Great as a gardening smock though Grin

Elsiequadrille · 20/01/2014 10:22

The quality is a bit hit and miss, and some of the prints are dreadful. But there are, on occasion, a few nice things to make it worth a look.

Rollermum · 20/01/2014 10:25

Have only bought one thing there - a denim skirt and it aged really badly and quickly

Indith · 20/01/2014 10:32

I have a tunic I got off ebay which is lovely. A friend has a load of older tunics and dresses which are fab. Off the back of that I got some stuff new and it was horrible. The jumpers bobbled within a couple of wears and were just slob a home and need an extra layer jumpers in no time at all. The tops looked horrible and just stretched out of shape. I was gutted given how much it cost.

The only good things are 3 wool mix tops I got that are absolutely wonderful. I wear them under dresses and jumpers all the time through the winter months. They are soft, thin and warm and have washed really well.

nevergoogle · 20/01/2014 10:41

i rate the dolce soft yoga style trousers. I change into them when i get home and the quality is good enough that they last forever.

princessalbert · 20/01/2014 10:59

I have had some nice skirts - but this was a good few years ago. They lasted well.

Most recently I had a cardigan, a summer weight tight fitting cardy. It seemed to lose its shape after a wash or two.

Mixed reviews from me. I do like their summery look though - v casual and easy going.

Primary School teacher!

Some good bits but most of it is a) shapeless and b) dreary colours, neither of which are any good for me.

WheresItTo · 20/01/2014 13:29

I have a couple of friends who buy most of their clothes from white stuff and they always look great, but whenever I go in and try stuff on I look like I am wearing rags! The cut just doesn't suit me, I think.

RockMummy · 20/01/2014 19:03

Depends if the colours suit you. I love teal, lime green and cream. I will try clothes in those colours in any shop to see if they look nice. I bought a beautiful green patterned dress in WS in the autumn and it suits me. Their trousers are not a good cut for me. So it does depend on your style and the colours which suit you as in any shop.

LittleBabyPigsus · 20/01/2014 19:10

The colours look good on the right people. My mum is a Soft Summer and looks great in them (and she luffs White Stuff - she is 42 btw). I am a Winter and look beyond shit in them, but it's all down to what looks good on the individual.
