What do they do?
Are they necessary?

Make shedloads of money for cosmetic industries by doing nothing that a half decent moisturiser and foundation can't do.

No.

Just my opinion Smile

Buttttt....... i cant stop going on about the aldi serum, costs £3.50, smells like suncream (which is always a winner with me Smile) and i swear has made my sin so much softer. ive not used it for 2 days as ive ran out and i can certainly tell the difference.

the one i have is for fine lines but there are 3 types altogether. my skin seems much brighter, softer and cleaner if that makes sense.... I have the skin that looks like it has foundation on which ive always wondered how to get. wish someone would have told me it only cost £3.50 from the supermarket down the road though!!

Prefer oils.

Have heard much hype about Aldi's Lacura serum and caffeine eye roll-on but found both were nothing special in real life.

Is the plural of serum sera?

Que sera sera? ( snigger, have nothing useful to add except I changed from using Olay serum to Aldi and I haven't ended up looking haggard overnight).

Serums are more intensive and concentrated than moisturisers and have a different formula. They do make a difference. If you have oily skin, use instead of moisturiser, if dry skin use under moisturiser.
