Please tell me how you do it?!

I'm 36 yrs old, 5'6", size 14 - I'm pretty happy with my figure but sometimes have problems disguising my mum tum. I want to look smart, a bit creative and hopefully nice. I am a middle manager in the civil service.

But... I have run out of places to shop, I can't afford Hobbs, Next has gone through the floor (shapeless chiffon anyone?) and I am in serious danger of considering per una. I sometimes like Monsoon, not the hippy shit.

Please help. What should I wear? Where can I buy it?

I am a great fan of dresses. They are so easy to wear, and you don't have to create an outfit, just pull them on, perhaps add a scarf or necklace, and you are good to go.

Try Zalando. They have loads at all different budgets.

I'm 31, size 14, 5'9", not sure how smart you need to be for work- do you wear suits or can you be a bit more casual? I don't do suits but have to look fairly smart. I buy nearly all my clothes in the sales- tend to pay max £35 for a dress, £25 for trousers, £20 for skirt, £20 for top, often a lot less though, the dress I wore to work yesterday was £7 in the New Look sale... (there are some lovely smart things in New Look if you have time to sift through all the other stuff)

I have work dresses from Phase Eight, Mint Velvet, Oasis, Nomads, Promod, Bravissimo and New Look.
Jumpers/cardigans- Uniqlo, Promod, Kew, New Look, All Saints
Trousers- Uniqlo, Next, Jigsaw (from charity shop)
Skirts- All Saints, Uniqlo, New Look, Warehouse, Hobbs (second hand from ebay)
Tops- Phase Eight, Uniqlo, Pepperberry, Cable and Gauge (TKMaxx), Promod, Boden (plain ones, not fun!), Nomads, Everette Bleu (TKMaxx), H+M
I also have a few vintage velvet jackets that I got from ebay.

Thanks everyone - you reminded me of some brands I used to lie and had forgotten about (phase eight) and have introduced me to some new ones I'dnever heard of before (Cos, Baulkjen).

I am now watching a ton of Hobbs suff on eBay.

I haven't dared go into H&M for years.... I thought it was strictly for young, skinny, tall girls?

I have no tummy muscles to exercise. The excess amniotic fluid surrounding DD2 washed them clean away.

I have had a bra intervention... But at M&S outlet shop so it may not count.

Inspired by this and the other thread about looking professional & feminine at work, I bought 2 faux wrap Ghost dresses from TK Maxx this morning which I am intending to wear with a black Burberry blazer my friend gave me years ago (I've never had the balls to wear it before and I can't actually get it done up Blush).

I don't have to wear suits, but I sometimes choose to wear them when I have an important meeting/big event on. I really like the way dressing up boosts my confidence and changes the way people react to me.

I feel like I'm organising my own personal rebrand.

The TK Maxx dress is here, sorry I've forgotten how to do links: www.tkmaxx.com/dresses/black+white-patterned-dress/invt/30043400&bklist=icat,4,shop,1,3091

Outlet stores, but at weird times and in the chavviest places (no offence, I'm serious). So - don't go in the January sales, cos that's when everyone else is bargain hunting. The middle of February, however, can result in some serious, shops just want to get rid at all costs, bargains. Similarly, Bicester Village is not that great any more, even at less expensive shops, cos it's just constantly busy with rich Chinese tourists and doesn't have to try very hard. In contrast, somewhere like The Galleria in Hatfield, or the Freeport one in Braintree are not teeming with rich Chinese tourists and thus have to try harder.

I really recommend Jaeger (outlet stores only of course). The quality is fantastic, the cut forgiving for non size 10 people, and if you time it right you can get some serious deals. I have numerous dresses from Jaeger that cost £250 new, but that I bought for £50. Similar price reductions on skirts and tops too. My best ever purchase from Jaeger was a navy pencil skirt, completely classic, reduced from £99 to £13.

I know you say you can't afford Hobbs, but it is great quality and in the sale or in outlet stores you can get fantastic deals. I have spent quite a lot at Hobbs in the sale, but now have lovely things that were greatly reduced (eg, silk top reduced from £99 to £29, a lovely silk dress reduced from £159 to £47), that will see me through this Spring/Summer.

The thing about building a good work wardrobe from sales and outlet stores, which is the only sensible option as far as I can see, is that it does require an investment of time as there will be many times when outlet malls are full of rubbish, and you will also need to be prepared to buy things out if season. But if you can do that, I think in the long run it will be better value and more sustainable than buying cheap and cheerful things from places like H&M.

If your work's dress code is quite smart, shift dresses are amazing for hiding big stomachs. Buy a couple of plain ones from M&S, and different scarves, cardigans and jackets can transform the look of them so no-one will guess that you're recycling the same dresses.

Me&em is normally pretty £££ but this cowl neck top in forest green is only £20 in the sale and still in stock in 14-16
I have already bought it and it's a great work top over black trousers or skirts.
