Any idea where I can buy organic make up?

I'm just slowly trying to get over a flare up of Peri oral dermatitis.
It's been terrible, sore, uncomfortable and so embarrassing.
I'm getting over major surgery so my self confidence is at it's lowest ever.

I've been researching the condition and it's recommended that you use as much natural products as possible so I've thrown away my benefit and now need a concealer and foundation with as little chemical content as possible.

Lots online but I'd rather shop so I can try it on.

Thanks.

Hmm not sure about brick and mortar stores unfortunately! Try health food stores? Not sure if Beauty Without Cruelty are organic. What about Bare Minerals? I would imagine they have some physical outlets.

Ledkr · 16/01/2014 19:30

Not sure about bare minerals tbh. Im going to research the ingredients.
Thanks

Beauty without cruelty- they have a loose powder that has always been mineral based before mineral became the thing.

Elysambre is another good brand.

LittleBabyPigsus · 16/01/2014 19:43

Also I realise Etsy stores are online only but most will do samples, so you can try before buying full-sized products.

Also, powder is very simple to make - you just need cornflour and different coloured clays for colouring. Mystical Moments on ebay is a good store for clays, lots of different colours and I'm sure the owner would do samples if you asked. The more clay, the heavier the coverage will be and like all mineral foundation you can build it up until you're happy with what you have.

If you are having skin problems, it might be worth trying the homemade kind? There are recipes on pinterest. You can add Vitamin E as a natural preservative too although you don't really need one as long as you keep the powder in a cool dry place.

Ledkr · 16/01/2014 19:45

Thanks flange does mineral make up automatically mean no chemicals?

Ledkr · 16/01/2014 19:46

Wow thanks little that's interesting.

everything is made from chemicals!

Is there anything in particular you need to avoid, or do you just want makeup with Tue shortest ingredient list?

They have a selection

You can get Dr Huaschka make up in John Lewis and also Selfridges I
think. I have also seen it occasionally in local health food/farm shop
places.

I mainly buy organic skincare and make up online - it can be a bit hit or miss and I am a bit uncomfortable choosing colours but I usually stick to things that I have found reviews of ( often on Amazon , then buy from a smaller retailer) and , as someone above has said, many websites will send you free , or cheap , samples .

There are loads of different websites out there when you start looking . I often buy from Green People , The Organic Pharmacy ( their make up range is Organic Glam) and another site called Mypure (they often have free delivery) .

There are also lots of blogs around with people talking about and reviewing organic products which can be helpful . I have been looking at them recently in my hunt for 'organic' nail varnish remover Smile

Ledkr I have peri oral and pustular dermatitis on my face and swear by Lavera as it has a really great range of cosmetics and skin care for sensitive and dermatitis prone skin.
I buy Lavera in the UK from a website called Lucy Rose Organic Beauty : www.lucyrose.biz as their customer service is vg. :)

Ledkr · 16/01/2014 19:58

Think I have to avoid heavy oils or wax's also the dreaded SLS and even fluoride toothpastes!

OP posts:
Ledkr · 16/01/2014 20:00

bookfairy any other tips?
I'm desperate.
Currently a massive flare up is hopefully tailing off with anti biotics but its been slow and not helped by originally being prescribed steroids.
My face is so sore. It's really got me down, I've always had lovely skin.

Twinklestein · 16/01/2014 21:42

LoveLula has organic cosmetics and beauty care etc...

Quoteunquote · 16/01/2014 21:45

Green life in Totnes do a large range, they also have an online shop ring the shop for expert advice.

FrugalFashionista · 16/01/2014 21:53

OP I'm recovering from perioral too. I'm being really careful with makeup and skincare because they seem to trigger it, but Lily Lolo concealer seemed to work. Using it very sparingly though but I get stinging, burning and flareups from my other foundations and concealers.

I'm barefaced a lot these days (after 20+ years of daily full slap). I changed my toothpaste and shampoo too. Skin almost clear now - incredible because it was still red and raw and sore around NYE!

Good luck and feel free to ask, some stuff on the Frugal thread too!

BookFairy · 16/01/2014 21:54

Oh Ledkr I really feel your pain. It's miserable having a sore face. Have you been referred to Dermatology?
My dermatologist recommended I use Cetaphil cleanser and mousturiser when it is bad. It is a bit pricey - £8.99 ish - but you can buy it in Boots.

Don't let yourself touch or pick at your face!

When I have a flare up I wash my face carefully with cetaphil (tepid water - not too hot or cold), dab it dry with face towel, and apply cetaphil moisturiser. I wait over 30 mins before applying mineral foundation with a soft brush that is not made from
animal hair - most are made from animal hair and that is so scratchy on sensitive skin!

I hope it starts to improve soon :)

LittleBabyPigsus · 16/01/2014 21:56

Mineral makeup is basically powdered clay with a few other ingredients (eg mica which creates shimmer). It contains chemicals because everything is a chemical!

To be honest, if your skin is that sore I would forgo makeup entirely - sorry! Do you have creams from your doctor? I would religiously stick to a very gentle cleansing and moisturising routine until your skin can heal, and take a zinc supplement as zinc helps wound and skin healing. It's one of the few vitamins that actually does something! You need to take it with vitamin C for it to absorb, I take a Wilkinsons own brand berocca daily since it contains both along with other vitamins. Eat plenty of oily fish and leafy greens, and a probiotic can also help.

Once your skin has healed somewhat, use a homemade clay and cornflour powder, then gradually work up to a standard mineral makeup.

FrugalFashionista · 16/01/2014 22:16

Explaining my routine, this is how I curbed perioral in 7-10 days without antibiotics:

  • I quit all skincare, including moisturizers and cleansers and facial wipes
  • I quit all makeup, including eye and lip makeup and loose powder
  • I wash with tepid water only once a day and with natural castile soap every few days
  • the stinging/ tightness/ flaking is a part of it, resist the urge to moisturize, if you wait a few days, your skin will heal
  • I got some relief from zinc and calendula nappy cream (Fissan); LRP Cicaplast Baume B5 may have helped too, but it felt more irritating
  • ditch your toothpaste and go fluoride and SLS free
  • switch to sulphate/SLS free haircare
  • don't touch your face and keep your hands clean and wash/disinfect all of your brushes
  • the days when you are sore and look awful feel interminable - I tried less drastic strategies for many weeks but they didn't help, so I went makeup free and stayed indoors a lot over the holidays
  • let your skin heal before reintroducing makeup slowly, one product a day (I've had flareups from lipstick, lip gloss and eye shadow; cornstarch and loose powder were overdrying on the sore skin and caused more flaking and stinging)
  • nobody knows exactly what the trigger is - so organic is not necessarily safe; steroids however (even nasal sprays!) are one of the known causes
  • I didn't change my diet or use any exotic oils or supplements - there are lots of suggestions about going vegan/ gluten free and using apple cider vinegar or yogurt to cleanse and tone the skin, but I didn't need to do that!
Ledkr · 16/01/2014 22:27

Oh thanks everyone.
Ybh it's really nice to have some sympathy and understanding.
I've been miserable fir two weeks now.
Looking back I've had it in small patches for a year but I got very stressed just before my op on the 3rd jan and also stopped steroid creams as realised what it was.
So I think the stress and stopping steroids caused a huge flare.
I've literally a red, sore and flaky beard and moustache!
Never been more miserable.
I'm using the anti biotic lotion but its slow going.
Is it ok to use that nappy cream during a flare up?
I'm desperate to moisturise it, it's so uncomfortable.
I find honey soothing, I read it on a PD forum.

OP posts:
FrugalFashionista · 16/01/2014 22:52

Honey and nappy cream were okay for me!
I've also had a small perioral rash on my skin since summer but Nov-Dec were super stressful (your body produces cortisols when you are stressed) and then I got the sore moustache and little areas in the corners of my eye...

Going out was awful, but people were too polite to stare and I only went out after dark. I regained my confidence soon though and now I've been everywhere. It starts with bumpy patches, then sore areas and little pustules, and when they dry up, then you'll have some peeling and itching (minerals at this stage are a disaster!), and finally just some redness. The redness is disappearing too - you cannot believe how relieved I am. Hope you'll feel better soon too!

BookFairy · 16/01/2014 23:23

E45 cream gave me a big scab so be a bit careful with that! I think the key is to not try too many things.

I had it around my mouth/jawline and it was grim. Much sympathy for you.

MrsFlorrick · 17/01/2014 20:03

These folk. Brilliant. Just fab. Their delivery is fast.

They stock the best most natural brands.

And full list of ingredients too

www.naturisimo.com/

www.beingcontent.com/

And lucy rose as someone else mentioned.

I find mineral makeup too irritating.

Try un-cover from RMS beauty. Apply with brush or fingers.

It's the biz. Very gentle but adjustable coverage. A tiny pot lasts me 3 months and I use DAILY and full coverage.

The other makeup worth a go is the foundation from Neals Yard. It's the only powder mineral
Makeup which doesn't irritate. Coverage is low so you could use something else under concealor or some such.

I do like the Lavera products but their make up has too much alcohol in and is too harsh for me. Shame because their shades are perfect and everything else about it is lovely.

Can't shed light on you peri oral derm. It's a bugger.

It can help to wash with selsun or nizoral shampoos. Apparently dandruff is similar to peri oral derm.

I'd give the dandruff shampoos a go. You've nothing to lose.

I buy all my make up skin care and shampoo etc from one of the above sites. I get terrible reactions to phenoxylethanol, methyl paraben, diemethecone (I HATE that stuff big red welts and flakes on my face and they chuck it in everything these days), cetyl alcohol, any other "cone" aka silicone, bismuth oxycloride.

Hope you find a solution soon.

Ledkr · 17/01/2014 20:19

Thankyou x
