Babyliss Big Hair - do I need to use product as well?

I have shoulder length, limp, fine hair and would love it to have a bit of oomph. I am very bad at doing anything with it myself - mousse etc just seems to stick to my scalp and make no difference to the volume. A good hairdresser can get reasonable volume with product and a serious blow dry.

Would a Babyliss Big Hair help me do this myself at home by avoiding product / making sure I use it properly, or would I still have the same problem?

I use a product to protect from heat, but I don't bother with a volumising product usually as it gives enough oomph without it (although BBH plus volumising spray does mean even bigger hair!)

I use a heat protector spray and also a Lee Stafford one which is called something like 'I don't like my hair the day I wash it' (really!) AND a mousse but it works! It makes my hair so much thicker. I have THIN hair and it's growing and these products really help (hair photo here - www.avenue57.com/a57/look/12152/looks-can-be-deceiving.aspx)

I use a little oomph spray - mousse doesn't tend to work for me either. The spray I use is just a cheap V05 one from Savers and it's pretty good. And I put a little L'Oreal Extraordinary Oil on the ends.

you don't have to, but the results are better if you do. I don't like mousse either, leaves hair kind of crunchy, but there are tons of other options available.

I have a similar hot air brush, and I use:

  • Wella Shockwaves Xtreme Hold Mousse before (as my hair is very soft and slippery, so this thickens it up and makes it hold styles better);
  • VO5 Volumising Heat Protection Spray before (mostly just to protect the hair from heat, although it does add a nice bit of extra oomph);
  • Elnett hairspray afterwards to hold the style (may not be relevant to you - I give myself a bouncy fringe and flicky-inwards short bits at the front).

Those things make the hairstyle last for 2 days, and don't make my hair crispy or stiff as long as I brush the products through properly. I wouldn't go near an open flame afterwards, though!
