Coats or shirts with removeable sleeves

Hi, maybe this should be on the Elderly Parents thread, but I am looking for some coats or shirts with detatchable sleeves because it's hard putting coats and shirts on my elderly Mum, but they don't seem to exist much... Other than a sort of poncho, does anyone have any ideas?

would she wear a loose easy to put on cardigan with a gilet over the top?

ProfessorDent · 15/01/2014 12:31

Thanks clouds, will have to Google those words... Confused

Am looking for a poncho from Jigsaw (£70) and Cape from Monsoon (£100) or detachable fleece currently...

A gilet is just the French word for bodywarmer. I'm never sure how to pronounce it myself.

ProfessorDent · 15/01/2014 12:42

Oh, yes, that looks good but then you have a lack of sleeves, which is chilly. Really I need detachable sleeves, really that is a gap in the market surely for the elderly. Maybe fleece with detachable sleeves might work.

I haven't looked myself but my dd has a puffa-type coat from Boden with detachable sleeves and hood, don't know if this sort of thing is available in adult sizes?

cloudskitchen · 15/01/2014 21:36

Poncho or cape sound like a good idea. you can get some really cosy ones at the moment

ProfessorDent · 17/01/2014 12:12

Ilovemydog, it seems there are loads of these items for kids but none for adults, I imagine it is because you need someone else to do up the zip on the sleeves (although actually you can do it yourself if you take the jacket off, hmm, got a head cold today) but with a kid you can imagine a parent helping with it, the zip is quite fiddly.

The Boden site has puffer jackets but none with detatchable sleeves for adults.

Since my first post, I have figured that really I am not sure an item without sleeves would help, as it might still be hard to get the wrist through the other hole. So a cape and poncho might be the way forward I suppose.

I had a look too and there do seem to be lots for kids but not much for adults. I think you're right, a nice cape will do!

I quite like this one from Lands End. And according to Marie Clare a cape is absolutely the latest thing! Your mum is going to be super trendy. Grin

ProfessorDent · 17/01/2014 16:24

Oh, these are good, thanks! Have you bought stuff from these sites, are they reliable?

I really wouldn't recommend detachable sleeves. The zips are very fiddly, and usually need putting together under the arm. So your mum would need to stick her arm in the air!

Lands End is an excellent company - I've been buying from them for over twenty years. That's excellent for quality and service, but let's just say their style is "classic" Wink

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 17/01/2014 19:49

This one is quite nice. Smile

ProfessorDent · 18/01/2014 11:35

Thanks, these look good! Agree about the zippy sleeves, I tried it with a jacket in Mango, Covent Garden, recently and it was a real fiddle. Someone should come up with velcro instead of zips, with so many elderly these days that's a business opp for somebody...

I have a few outdoorsy jackets with detachable sleeves. They are very fiddly. In a similar situation, my dad had an Inverness Cloak (Sherlock Holmes coat).

BikeRunSki · 18/01/2014 16:15

something like this? Tweed versions available for several hundred pounds! Google "Inverness cloak" or " Inverness cloak". Basically it is a long coat, but with a waist length cape instead of sleeves. No need to thread arms through sleeves. My dad had Parkinson's and could barely move at times. This style of coat was a godsend.

BikeRunSki · 18/01/2014 16:16

I meant ".... Or "Inverness Cape" in my second sentence.

ProfessorDent · 20/01/2014 12:41

Several hundred pounds for an Inverness cape! Do they throw in 4 and 20 virgins for that? The link you posted is the cheaper one, doesn't look too warm, but I will look for other variations, thanks!
