Moisturiser for using with roaccutane

dontmixthecolours · 13/01/2014 13:23

I'm starting roaccutane this week and wondered if anyone could recommend a good moisturiser to use while on it. I normally use Liz Earle light moisturiser for oily skin but I'm worried it'll be too light. Thank you

I used very basic brands at the time like oil of ulay, Nivea and E45. You will defo need something that is quite enriched, which is quite a novelty after having oily skin and previously avoiding anything that was too heavy. the skin does get very parched, drink lots of water, I also had to slap loads of Vaseline on lips and inner nostrils as the skin got flaky. Good luck with it, I know it comes with a bad press but roaccutane really can work and sorted my skin out within 4 months.

Body shop aloe Vera night cream. So soothing and rich. I used it during the day too as your skin dries out alarmingly. However the drugs do work and I have pretty perfect skin now. Only regret is that I didn't do it sooner!

lurkingfromhome · 13/01/2014 16:05

La Roche Posay is your friend here. I'm on Roaccutane and using these products almost exclusively (Boots often has offers on them too). I use Effaclar H (specially formulated for "oily skin weakened by over-drying treatments") most of the time, and Cicaplast ("for flaking, chapped skin, post cosmetic peels") if I have any particularly dry patches. That one can be used on your lips too.

Oh, I also wanted to try vitamin E as I'd read that it's good for cell regeneration and sorting out scars. Picked up a couple of those in Holland & Barrett (it's the Dr Organic range) and use those too and they seem to be working quite well. I use the serum at night.

Lipbalms, in case you're interested in those: the absolute best ones for me have been (a) Carmex (b) Burt's Bees and (c) Lanolips. Don't bother with Vaseline - it forms a barrier but doesn't actually add any moisture when you feel like your lips are like the Sahara.

I personally didn't go with the e45, cetaphil eyc that gets reccomended because they are full if carp that acne prone skin doesn't need. Elemental Herbology's Cell Plumping wasnt saviour. With La Roche Posay SPF fluid.

Btw I was ever dry or peeling so do t count on your skin becoming dry. My skin was normal throughout sh

ladypete · 14/01/2014 00:23

Pressed to soon...

..so I have bottles of crappy cetaphil in a drawer somewhere.

Sorry about the spelling mistakes, I'm typing whilst lying sideways in bed! And the Cell Plumping WAS my saviour!! Grrrrrr

Chocolategirl7 · 14/01/2014 07:04

Oh this is interesting! I used E45 when I had it (a while ago to be honest) and just slapped it on. I must have had every lip balm going too.
It worked a treat for me and my skin has been pretty much clear since ( although I suffered dreadful depression at the time - so please keep an eye on that).
I have dreadfully wrinkly skin now (I'm mid 40s) and wonder if I should have taken more care at the time. Hmmmm

dontmixthecolours · 14/01/2014 09:15

Thanks chocolategirl. The depression does worry me a bit, I've suffered a bit in the past but that was after recurrent miscarriage so I'm hoping I'll be ok. Trying to focus on the fact that my skin will be better than it is now.

Thanks again everyone

I don't mean to minimise or make light of the depression thing, and yes, do keep an eye on it, but I have found waking up every morning for the past 20-odd years and staring at my acne-ridden face in the mirror a fairly depressing sight. Actually seeing an improvement and knowing that things can only get better is quite cheering, I find Smile.

Ladypete, which cleanser did you use, if you don't mind my asking? I have been using Cetaphil but am a bit Hmm about its ingredients. Not sure what to try next (as am so unused to buying skincare NOT for oily skin). My skin is not actually drying out that much but I can't use all my usual glycolic type products.

Chocolategirl7 · 14/01/2014 16:18

Lurkingfromhome - I almost put that in my post - what came first the depression or the acne? Wink
Who knows! But getting rid of the acne is a long term thing and it is so wonderful to wake up every day with clear skin. But if they could develop a drug without the side effects of roaccutane that would be even better!!

ladypete · 15/01/2014 21:47

lurking I used one called "cool & clear" from SpaceNK.. It's a gentle gel based cleanser but doesn't strip the skin

I will re-iterate my skin wasn't dry though so if try a sample first Smile

VikingLady · 15/01/2014 21:55

I used the "mature skin" types of Olay/Loreal etc. I was on roaccutane for 4 months when I was 14, and I think I needed heavy-duty moisturiser for at least a year! You may need to reapply moisturiser after going out in bad weather. And lots of lip balm!

Fantastic stuff though. I still have flawless skin 20 years later.

lurkingfromhome · 16/01/2014 07:56

Thanks ladypete - you've given me a good excuse to go and visit the wondrous emporium that is SpaceNK Grin

dontmix - feel free to PM me if you want to discuss how your Roaccutane treatment is going. I've been on it now for 7 weeks so am a bit ahead of you.

princessalbert · 16/01/2014 09:33

On the acne forums - many use Cetaphil cleanser and moisturiser. I bought some - and like the face wash (despite the SLS, it doesn't dry out skin) but the moisturiser is too much for my face. I use it on my legs.

Would be interested to hear more about your roaccutane treatment. I have an apt with a private derm shortly - mild acne, but at 45 yo I want clear skin.

Good luck

lurkingaround · 16/01/2014 10:27

I would second the La Roche Posay route. I think my derm recommended the Toleriane range for dry skin when I was on Roaccutane. I was on a low dose, so while my skin dried out it was never very bad. The depression thing post recurrent miscarriage I understand, I had a similar situation, but my own experience with Roaccutane was so positive, no hint of low mood, just delight at fabulous (well, sort of!) skin. Pores look smaller, no peering at spots in the morning, and not having oily skin or hair was quite a novelty.

The lip balm that worked best for me was Elizabeth Arden 8 hour one. you will often get it on offer with the smelly 8 hour cream.

princessalbert, I was 40 and like you mild(ish) grumbling acne. Low dose did me and I still thoroughly enjoy my clear skin.
