Concealing under eye problems......

FabMum1 · 12/01/2014 20:28

Since reaching a certain age......40...... Not only has my skin changed but also the area around my eyes.

I have a new cleansing routine which seems to have got my skin under control, I hardly have to use any foundation now. But obviously my old concealers are now too thick to cover my under eye area.

I have dark circles which need concealing. I've tried the Bobbi Brown concealer, but it's too heavy. Plus, Collection and MAC.

I think I need light reflective as well as concealing now. Can anyone help/have any suggestions?

I find it a nightmare ,most brands that I put under my eyes highlight the fine lines .I find mixing a moisturiser with ysl or collection the best way so far. I need light reflecting not conceaing though.

ggirl · 12/01/2014 20:33

I am 51 btw so you prob don't have the line problem

FabMum1 · 12/01/2014 20:59

Thank you ggirl

I think maybe I need light reflective more than concealing too. The fine lines just seem to soak up the concealer and look worse

Try the By Terry product ..Touche Veloutee. Very good.

I've tried a cheapy and been really impressed. I'm usually a make up snob so this has been a revelation! It performs as well as the spendy ones

It's Boots 17 Phwoarr paint and its about a fiver . Good coverage without being too heavy. Give it a go

ggirl · 13/01/2014 07:54

I've tried this by terry hyaluronic one and was not impressed

I am 42 and have tear troughs (darker lines that are the beginnings of a bag) that really bother me.

I use a creamier based concealer (bobbi brown creamy con, the collection wand one, cle de peau, dainty doll in second lightest - anything I grab) and a Louise Young tiny concealer brush and only apply to the dark line and in the corner. Do not apply up to the eye lashes or the puffier skin or else.

Sometimes I set with the tiniest bit of Laura Mercier brightening powder, but again, not on the 'bag' itself.

The worst thing you can do is use a light reflective concealer with the start of eye bags.

It's in the deft application of a concealer a shade or two lighter than your skin, not the concealer itself. And an acceptance that you can't completely cover up the darkness - learn to live with it a bit!

Less is more. I've had the same concealers I own applied by inexperienced MUA a la kardashian and I look 90 years old.

And this tip comes from my top makeup artist friend who is my age and has the same issue.

I've recently tried the Clarins Instant Concealer, specifically for under eye area. It's in a tube and you only need a weeny bit, very pigmented. Clarins claim that it also has ingredients which will work on those creases. It doesn't settle into lines and I have put away my Benefit Boing in favour of this. Benefit showed every single crease. I'm 51, though.

I find counteracting the colours in the dark circles to be the best method. So, because mine are purple-ish, I use a yellow concealer - I like the Bourjois healthy mix one, it's very light and creamy so shouldn't highlight fine lines. Although I am too pale for Bourjois foundation, I use the medium concealer because it is more yellow, and it blends in perfectly. Worth a try! If your dark circles are more blue, try an orange concealer - I know it sounds weird but it's the same principle as green anti-redness makeup. Get an orange concealer here.

Touche Éclat by YSL, always. I go through phases (when I've run out) when I convince myself that it doesn't really make any difference. Then as soon as I buy a new one, I remember just how much of a difference it makes.

They have lots of different tones now, which is good for some, but the one for all, original tone was perfect for me. I think it was for most tbh.

Are you using any eye cream? Burts bees is my personal favourite, but I'm doing my usual "doesn't make much difference" because I've run out of that too and am reluctant to buy more Grin Don't think they sell it at boots anymore, but you can get it on Amazon I think.

Fino812 · 13/01/2014 10:14

Ran out of touché éclat over Christmas and feeling too poor to replace bought a cheapie Bourjois concealer stick (stick anticernes correcteur). It's amazingly good. I am very shadowy and wrinkly around my eyes (a lovely combination) and it works a treat to brighten AND it doesn't sit in my lines. Fab.

blackandwhiteswan · 13/01/2014 11:05

ooooo Fino, will keep that in mind, as I don't think my touché éclat has much life left in it. Concealers can be very unflattering if they sit in the lines, so you need to be really careful not to choose anything too heavy.

madmomma · 13/01/2014 13:28

They're all too heavy past a certain age aren't they? I gave up undereye concealers last year because they all - even the £££ ones, sit in the crepey bits. I just take foundation up to the lashline and then use a tiny bit of a light reflecting one to clean up the outer corner. I found I had to choose between looking tired or looking old (with cakey concealer). I chose tired Grin

FabMum1 · 13/01/2014 20:16

Oooo tomorrow morning I'm going to try just concealing the dark area. I normally conceal the whole under eye area

You're right madmomma, they do all seem too heavy.

Just want to find the right thing

Well I tried that tip and it worked a treat so thanks very much clare

clarequilty · 14/01/2014 18:52

glad to help. Any product with a pigment in it will settle - some quicker than others of course. And some products are too thick (laura mercier secret camo, for instance) for that area, while some people prefer the 'setting' type of concealer (like the collection one) and others the creamy thick type like Bobbi Brown.

But in the end they all dry/cake and settle and you want to keep it minimal and not add that layer to the slightly bagging area. So also avoid the YSL type highlighter/concealers.

It's slightly different if you are young and have just hereditarydark circles, then the kardashian type triangle trick works better,

BaconAndAvocado · 14/01/2014 21:45

I have dark shadows (thanks mum!) and use Benefit Erase Paste under Clinique Even Better foundation.

It works well but doesn't completely conceal the dreaded panda eyes.
