I knew it would happen but it's so depressing - post natal hair loss

So mid September a few weeks from giving birth my hair was lovely and thick and the longest it has ever been, I think I even still thanks to the heat wave and pregnancy hormones, had a light tan. I was swanning about in maxi dresses which made me look pregnant - but that was fine because I was. It's now mid January and today the mass hair loss has begun. I'm not sure I'll have any left by the end of the day. I'm pale and sporting oversized eye bags due to DS deciding sleep is not on the agenda. Apart from getting pregnant again what can I do to improve my hair and skin? Also I'm on the hunt for tops which cover the baby belly without making me look pregnant?
Thanks

Awww suntoday, I'm sure you look lovely but totally understand the worry. I've only just given birth so look like crap but my hair has been great too so dreading the day.

I guess there isn't anything can stop it but how about treating yourself to a nice treatment at the hairdressers, mine do l'anza ones which are lovely. Or you could buy some home ones or almond/coconut oil and do some home pampering. I love putting in oil or treatment then heating a damp towel in the microwave and sitting with it on my head.

Have you considered having your hair cut? Mine is long and nice at the mo as I'm due to give birth next month but I'll have it cut and layered at Easter I think.

I did the same first time round too. I just didn't have the time to keep it nice and was loosing so much that it was always pinned up. At least cutting it made me keep it down and forced me to style it a bit.

My gp recommended a silica supplement for excessive and prolonged post pregnancy hair loss. I was amazed by how much it helped.

At least you know yours will grow back, mine won't .

It isn't hair loss. During pregnancy, you didn't lose hair, and now the pregnancy hormones have stopped, your hair is going back to normal - all the hair you didn't lose over 9 months is coming out at once - that is why it looks like terrible hair loss.

You are just losing the hair that doesn't fall out as usual during pg. You will end up the same as before you got pg.

Eat well, get yourself out and about and exercising (brisk walks is fine),make the best use of the day whenever there is any sunshine, for the Vit D, eat plenty of fruit and veg and drink plenty of water and you will be your healthy energetic self in no time.

And if not, talk to your GP to ensure that you are not anaemic or depressed.

My hairdresser told me to wear my hair down because when it's tied up you dont really shed it, it just stays in your ponytail till you take your bobble out and then it EXPLODES.

NewBeginningsSnoopy · 12/01/2014 22:53

Coconut oil is MAGIC for this.

Ooh interesting about the silica, how can I get some?!

Yes to a good cut, good products and be gentle with it! I spray a bit if bastisse thicken dry shampoo round the mix lengths/ends of my hair for body.

Try layer your tops- a long line fitted vest to worn under a looser jumper/top with the vest just showing looks good.

Drink masses of water, wear a but if bronzed then put a pop of blusher on top for a really fake healthy glow. Clarins flash balm is amazing if you have the budget.

I feel your pain. I dread washing and brushing my hair now as it just comes out in clumps and just makes me want to cry!!!
It's definitely not just what I would have lost when pregnant as the patches around my temples are much worse than pre-pregnancy.
I had a blood test on Friday to check my iron levels, I think it can be worsened by a zinc deficiency too. If it seems like really excessive hair loss it might be worth getting your thyroid checked too as post partum thyroiditus is quite common.

Hope yours gets better soon. I totally sympathise with the eye bags too!

Me too! I thought it was a miracle there was a hair left on my head the amount I was shedding. Now at nearly a year on I can see the light! The shedding had drastically reduced and i have a kind of short under fringe(!) where all the hair is growing back
