'Hard' water and minimising impact on hair?

Hi everyone,

I've just moved to a new part of the country and having been here a few days, discovered that my hair is going mad with the much harder water here. It is horribly dry, flyaway and feels like I still have shampoo or something in it. (I don't). I have struggled with my hair when visiting here before so I'm guessing it can only be the water.

What do you do to protect your hair from harder water? I wash my hair every day, have used herbal essence shampoo and conditioner for years with no problems. My hair isn't dyed or highlighted etc. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you.

Does Lush still do shampoo for hard and soft water?

You could rinse your hair in filtered water after bathing / showering. I don't, but have lived in hard water areas all my life and my hair seems healthy enough to me but you could try this to see if it makes a difference.

I have lots of sympathy for you Sad. I live in a very hard water area and my hair and skin is really really rubbish because of it. In our old house we had a water softener fitted which helped quite a bit - so might be something to look at but can be expensive.

Thanks, the water filtering is interesting. Capsium, interesting to hear you aren't bothered by the harder water. I wonder if it settles down in time, and I'm just noticing it because of the change.

I'll have a look online at Lush Little, thank you!

Use diluted vinegar for your final rinse after washing. Apple cider vinegar is the best or white wine is good too. One part vinegar to at least ten parts water. It removes the chalk that's in the water from your hair. Do it once a week. Don't worry the smell goes as your hair dries. As well as getting rid of the minerals in the hard water from your hair it also smoothes hair and is good for your scalp.

Oh a vinegar rinse is great for hair - the water in my area is not too bad but I find it helps with an itchy scalp. I actually use the very cheapest malt vinegar and it's fine, although I do have v dark hair.
