chunky sweater for an extreme pear shape?

I am very pear shaped and on the bigger side (14 top and 16/18 bottom). I normally wear a-line or flared skirts with tops and a cardie for work.

I knit and have pattern for a lovely looking boat necked sweater. It's very chunky with cables. I've found wool in a colour that would go with all my skirts but would it work on someone my shape. I love boat necks and would wear them a lot when thinner but have lost my way dressing my bigger self...

Any help gratefully received!

Firstly I'm a firm believer in if you love what you're wearing and you feel comfortable that is the main thing. Is the colour you're planning on going for a good colour on you? Secondly have you tried on any chunky knits ? I'm pear shaped and mainly wear skinny jeans with knitwear (hiding post baby belly!) it has been an education finding what does and doesn't suit. For example I still need the arms to be fairly slim otherwise I look too top heavy, also the type of knit makes a difference, today I tried on a cable knit jumper which added too much bulk. Finally the length is important, I tend to avoid anything which sits at my widest point , above or below seem to be more flattering. I would try lots if styles on first and find one you can replicate. Good luck, I wish I had your skills!

Go for it.
You're making it yourself so can make the length just how you want. If you think it's a bit baggy round the waist, you old either wear a belt or knit a bit of shaping into the waist. It's really easy to do. If it's cable it will be easier to put the shaping along the side seams rather than across the whole width, which might throw the cables out. Just measure up from the bottom where the waist will fall &,using your tension guide, decrease from hip to waist, work an inch, then increase back up again till you have the right stitches for the arm hole shaping.
Hand knits are always so much nicer than bought, mass produced garments, one reason they cost so much if you can find them to buy. The choice of yarns knocks spots off most manufactured knits.

Could, not old Blush

Thank you for your responses, i'm going to go for it. Aquelven that's a good point about the choice of yarns and a good tip about measuring waist length, I hadn't thought of that.

Suntoday I was also worried about the arms but I'm thinking of doing them 3/4 length which will hopefully stop them feeling too bulky. I'm hoping that a wide neck will take some of the bulk out of the shoulders.

Thank you!

I could have written your post. I am exactly the same shape and size as you. I also knit.
I agree with the waist shaping mentioned earlier. I also wear my sleeves at three quarter length. They are very flattering on pear shapes as they finish at waist height and draw the eye there. This is usually the slimmest part on pear shapes.
Do you go onto the Ravelry website? It's a huge resource of knitting patterns. There are also lots of forums where people help each other and discuss all sorts of things knitting related, and unrelated. There is a very famous knitwear designer on there who runs courses in America on how to get your knitting to fit, and which styles suit which shapes. There is a large group on Ravelry that posts picture of various things they've altered etc, but this designer will also give advice on how to alter your pattern to suit you. I can't remember her name off the top of my head (helpful). Amy Herzog springs to mind. If you go on to the groups page and search for her,or customising garments, I'm sure you'll find the group.
