Where would you go for good a good quality suit that's not too expensive?

I am looking for a good quality, fairly conservative suit that I can wear for interviews and later mix and match - any ideas, please? I don't seem to find anything I like and that's affordable.

What's the budget? Hobbs outlet do suits at what I think is a good price for the quality jacket/skirt/trousers at around £200.
If your budget is less than £100 I would try M&S,
I suppose it all depends on budget, your age/size and the type of job interview!

Hi, I looked at the Hobbs outlet, it looks pretty much depleted round there at the moment and even the sales are not great. I am a size 10 or 12 if it's a small 12. I looked at M&S too, but nothing there. I can spend nothing up to £150 if I have to. It has to be something presentable. Thank you!

Banana Republic suits are good quality and very reasonably priced, particularly if you buy online using one of the discount codes frequently available.

Austin reed in sale?

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/01/2014 19:40

I'd agree with Hobbs, also Planet, Austin Reed, jigsaw, debenhams also good

Rubybrazilianwax · 10/01/2014 19:56

Jaegar

Karenblixen · 10/01/2014 20:05

Just looking at Planet, looks good, but I probably missed the sale, haven't I? I used to buy New York Industry suits, but they are now out of my price range, unfortunately.

Have you got a slaters?

Karenblixen · 10/01/2014 20:16

Slaters? I am not sure, possibly. I will take a look.

I just looked at Alberto Biani (New York Industrie), but this is definitely out of my price range these days! I love those suits!

Still looking at Planet, their new black 2 button jacket plus skirt looks quite nice, but pricey still.

Austin Reed or Charles Tyrwhitt, if they still do women's clothing? I got a CT suit in one of their surplus stock sales at a racecourse and it was lovely. I bought an Austin Reed suit on eBay, and it's excellent too. And was a bargain, think I paid under £40.

Karenblixen · 10/01/2014 20:23

Charles Tyrwhitt don't do women's suits anymore, only shirts and jumpers (I am wearing one of their shirts right now, as they still send me vouchers).

Banana Republic skirts are quite short - I have long legs and I think a business skirt should be below knee length?

Can I get away with a trouser suit?

I have looked at Esprit as well, but their skirts are even shorter!

Check charity shops. There were loads of suits when I looked round today.

scottishmummy · 10/01/2014 20:45

Hobbs

Hanginggardenofboobylon · 10/01/2014 20:51

Definitely no issues with wearing a trouser suit.
I have a couple of TM Lewin suits, they are not amazing quality but have lasted without going shiny, usually come in under £100 you have to buy trouser suits from them though as the skirts are very Melanie Griffiths in working girl Wink
I have had a few Jigsaw suits over the years too, no idea of the price point these days.
Try Austin reed sale too although again I find the skirts an unfashionable 80's power dressing type length!

Hanginggardenofboobylon · 10/01/2014 20:54

Has the Hobbs site got any of the Lola suit left?? I bought it at the beginning of the sale and love it. Gorgeous lined trousers and a below knee pencil skirt

Karenblixen · 10/01/2014 20:56

Sold out, unfortunately Sad I missed the sale, I think.

Agree, I am not that keen on Austin Reed. I like Planet, still and the new Hobbs collection looks great, but v. expensive.

If you are planing on wearing it as seperates later, get 2 bottom halfs - skirts, trousers, dresses - bottoms get s lot more wear than jackets.

Hanginggardenofboobylon · 10/01/2014 21:05

Linea at House of Fraser?

I wear black suits day in day out Hmm

I had a great one from Hugo Boss, again check the sale.

Karenblixen · 10/01/2014 21:12

Checked Hugo Boss, nothing left in my size! Has everyone bought suits in the sale except for me?

Some of the nThe designer at debenhams brands can be ok. Jasper conran, julien McDonald

Hanginggardenofboobylon · 10/01/2014 21:17

The advantage of Hobbs is that if you can't stretch to the price they often do the same fabrics year on year so you can always add a piece later. Good investment IMO they last years.

Karenblixen · 10/01/2014 21:39

I just browsed through the Zalando website, but it is just too much choice - I am far too pragmatic for that.

I will see if our local Hobbs shop has a decent choice left in the sale - thank you Hanginggarden for persisting with Hobbs!

So far, I have just stuck to my European brands and it's been ages since I last bought a suit.

Update: This was too good to miss, so for now I bought the Planet knitted pencil skirt and roll neck in the sale to ease back into workwear. It is smart enough for now to go to information events and training. Suit will follow - I will look in our nearest outlet.

Thank you all!
