Does this dress suit me?

Please be brutally honest. You've been really good at this in the past.

I've been coveting this dress for months but it's been out of stock. Finally spotted it back it stock so ordered but I'm actually not sure it suits me right. It is my size but feels ever so slightly possibly a tiny bit too tight around the bit where the pleats start IYKWIM (not insurmountable as I'm trying to lose a bit more weight).

The style feels a bit young girl ish (I'm old 32) and very different to my usual style, but that might just be because it's not like my usual dress choices. Would really value your opinion as to if the style suits me and whether to return it (I'm using some christmas money to buy it so could return and but something more suited at some point in the future with no bother).

Thanks

I'd say that the style suits you well, but there's something wrong about a toadstool pattern on a grownup. There's plenty of lovely kitch retro prints about. Some experts will be along soon with some better ones, I hope.

spookySwitched · 10/01/2014 14:44

I'd say its not awful, but you do look like you have a lovely figure and I'm sure you could find something nicer.

If you keep it I guarantee you won't wear it much.

HyvaPaiva · 10/01/2014 14:50

Brutal honesty, OP. Sorry, I don't think the dress is flattering.

Quirky prints can look great but this one would only suit a little girl. It looks like overgrown children's wear.

The style is most unflattering at the waist. It's not a problem with your waist but the dress. Waists need definition, this blurs your waistline.

In the second photo it does look rather pulled, maybe a little tight as you say, above the waistband area.

Sorry!

chocoluvva · 10/01/2014 14:51

I'm with spooky on this.

Hassled · 10/01/2014 14:52

I think the style is fine and the cut is OK - doesn't look tight.

But a big fat no to the material. It's just too young for an adult.

MerylStrop · 10/01/2014 14:54

I think you could get something with a better cut, a better fit and a better print but the same general vintagey vibe. Generally not keen on prints on a white background, and even less so with thick tights.

Send it back if you can.

Are you after something for a particular occasion or general wear

AndTwoBits · 10/01/2014 14:57

I'm sorry but no, it's a very childish looking dress. My 5 year old would adore it, i'm really sorry!

Floisme · 10/01/2014 14:57

Nothing to do with your age but I don't think the pleating around the tummy is very flattering. Maybe if you can work out what you like about it - e.g. colour? shape? - then someone can help you find something that suits you better.

Reastie · 10/01/2014 14:58

Spooky yes this is my thoughts/worry too, and if I'm not going to wear it alot I really don't want to part with my money. It fits me but I'm not sure how much it suits me.

Well, i'm going to buck the trend and say I love the fabric, but I've always had weird taste Grin

Meryl not any specific ocassion, I've just fancied the look of that dress for age I seem to be the only one who likes the toadstools

I shall send it back then. That was my feeling when I tried it on but wanted to check it's just that it wasn't different to my usual style that it was putting me off.

I'm torn between liking the dress but also feeling you could find something that would flatter you more. I mean that in a positive way: you look like you have a great figure and the cut of the dress suggests you might be trying to hide it.

I you do keep it, as Meryl suggests, lose the thick tights.

The tightness around the waist together with the pleats is rather unflattering. The toadstool print is not my style but maybe you can get away with it if you have a 'young-looking' face and you keep the shrug on. Not thrilled about the tights either.

What makes it weird for me is the cotton fabric, which is more suitable for summer, combined with a knitted shrug and thick tights. Yet I don't think it works for you as a summer dress by itself.

MerylStrop · 10/01/2014 15:14

I don't dislike the print per se, just not keen on it for on grown up clothing...maybe a nice cushion cover? ; )

My other post sounds a bit grumpy, sorry.

You could really suit that nipped in waist flared skirt 50s-ish kind of look, but the waist needs to be on the waist and seamed not gathered.

Twinklestein · 10/01/2014 15:14

I like the fabric on its own - but not as a dress for an adult. It would make great curtains...

Also, I think you have a lovely figure and it doesn't fit particularly well.

(Btw with regard to your thread in relationships, you would have no problem finding someone else). Thanks

whereisshe · 10/01/2014 15:19

I don't think it suits you - you have a good figure and the cut of that dress makes you look like you have no waist... I like the print though, it's quirky.

DreamRabbit · 10/01/2014 15:29

Can I be cheeky and ask where you got it? I think it's absolutely adorable! Reminds me of the Japanese brand Emily Temple Cute - very quirky and girly.

blobandsnail · 10/01/2014 15:34

I love this dress. I have the birds pattern one and wear it a lot.Sometimes I add a waist belt to mine to add a little definition. If you have the confidence to be a bit quirky you can easily pull it off.

DreamRabbit it's a cath kidson dress.

5HundredUsernamesLater · 10/01/2014 15:42

I like it. Seen and admired it on the website but unfortunately I'm to old and too fat for that style dress. A young colleague of mine wears similar styles and always looks good.

rookiemater · 10/01/2014 15:55

I'm not mad on it tbh. Like others have said you have a great figure, but it's not a very flattering dress, also the length is not brilliant - sort of on the knee but not quite.

enormouse · 10/01/2014 16:00

I kind of like the print. I think it's quite sweet.

But like others have said you have a great figure and that dress doesn't do it justice. I wish Cath kidston would put a bit more effort into their dresses/skirts considering the money they want for them.

ElizabethBathory · 10/01/2014 16:26

It's hard to tell if it suits you without seeing your face :) But I think the shape of the dress suits your figure fine - I'm sure, like others have said, you could find something more slimming/flattering, but you have a nice enough figure to pull off the dress, IMO.

Re. the print, I think the toadstools are far too big! They just look a bit mad. I am all for quirky prints and have clothes with tiny ponies on, sequinned rabbits, hearts, butterflies, matryoshkas, etc (am also 32...) so I do think it's fine to indulge your childish side once in a while. But that particular print is just a bit hideous.

Reastie · 10/01/2014 16:29

Twinkle 'it would make great curtains' Grin . Thanks for your nice comments re: me and my other thread btw. I have lost alot of weight in the past couple of years Grin [proud]

Dream it's Cath Kidston. Glad it's not just me liking it!

I agree I wasn't sure it was flattering, but wasn't sure if it was just me thinking this or not. Wish they sold the same fabric but a more flattering style Sad

Blush I can't believe how many of you said I have a great figure. It means so much as I have never had a great figure!

burnishedsilver · 10/01/2014 16:41

The shape suits you but the print leaves a lot to be desired.
What you need is that dress in a different fabric, rather than a different dress in the same fabric. The fabric is more suited to a childs bedroom, sorry.

Congrats on the weightloss :-)

blobandsnail · 10/01/2014 18:00

OP if you're not sure about the dress but love the material how about getting the skirt instead? www.cathkidston.com/mushroom-skirtcath-kidston/fcp-product/1008797. You might find it sits better on your natural waist.

MairzyDoats · 10/01/2014 18:03

I'm with everyone who said the dress suits you, it doesn't look too tight to me, but dear god NO to the mushrooms. It was fine until I zoomed in.
