Am a total running novice always fancied it, but decided I am feeling a big need to take this up right now! help me wise ones to get kitted out:) what's the thoughts on karrimor running gear and how do there sizes come up?

The biggest worry is a good sports bra as im rather large up front! any recommendation's on makes and sizing of sports bras?

Any local indie sports/running/triathlon shop will be able to do gait analysis. And buy the shoes they recommend, bloody cheeky to get someone to do some work, provided judgement and recommendation based on their skill, training and experience and then not even buy the shoes. I am wary of online shoes - you don't know how old they are, and the soles and cushioning decays slowly and has a shelf life.

I had gait analysis for my current shoes find at the New Balance shop in Castleford and have also been to Up and Running, Wakefield and Accelerate in Sheffield. If you are anywhere near Sheffield, I really, really rate them.

Definitely go to a local indie running shop for your shoes. I bought a pair yesterday and they are so comfy and are definitely the right pair for my gait. Tell them what your budget is they'll work with it. Re: clothes, running clothes from Sports Direct are perfectly adequate you may need gloves and a hat if it's cold where you are.

But don't feel pushed into buying a pair of shoes just because someone has done the gait analysis if they don't feel right for you. I got fitted at a local independant running shop and several pairs she thought were good didn't feel right, and I haven't been happy with the ones I ended up with - and have heard from others since that they've found the same. Another independant shop tried to persuade my friend that a too tight pair of shoes would stretch Hmm

runners need had some nice bits in their sale, might be worth a look. ASICS were cheap and wash up really well. I started out with Karimoor, def good for starting out since it is so cheap. I found it didn't last though, my pink top went rather grey looking after 8 months or so, and both my bottoms the zips have broken. They run true to size.

Def don't go to sports direct for shoes, I've heard people in there being pushed into buying Karimoor running shoes, which truly are awful.

Don't forget running socks neither! I started out running in cotton trainer liners and got horrendous blisters in the arches of my feet.

CynicalandSmug · 10/01/2014 11:53

The best tip I ever got for sports bras is to avoid the expensive ones, and wear two. Very comfortable and no movement whatsoever.

Gait analysis gave me awful ASIC shoes which caused me to heel strike which then caused knee pain. I ditched those clunky dire shoes, and now run on the mid foot, injury free for years.

Please please read up on running with good form, I see so many people running badly locally, and it is bad form and bad shoes which causes so many injuries.

I bought a few things from sports direct. They're alright. But bought a running top from H&M on the off chance months ago and loved it. Have since bought running tights and a winter top from there. All have worn really well and wash well. Plus I find the tops longer than a lot of other sports tops which for someone with a long body is a huge plus. Also they have a lot of stuff in the sale right now.

Personally I'd worry less about the clothes though and concentrate on the bra and decent shoes. I used to get mine from an independent store but won a free pair from sweatshop a couple of months ago (yay parkrunner of the month!) and couldn't rate them enough. I'm not a very good runner but they took me seriously and listened to every niggle i'd ever had. Gait analysis was excellent and picked up some things that explained a lot about problems I'd had in the past with pain etc. They're also so confident that they fit the right shoes they'll take them back and replace them for free within 30 days if they're not right (this applies even if you get them for free too). I will be going back to them for my next pair that's for sure.

Some Shock Absorbers bras on 2 4 1 on Wiggle!
here

I usually wear the activity Run bra. After all, running is a gym activity.

I agree with the poster who said that there's nothing worse than hoiking up too-loose running trousers. Drives you mad!

My top tip is, buy running kecks with a little zip pocket in the back. Then you can put your keys in there and you don't have to worry about wearing a jacket with pockets (which, if you're anything like me, will be round your waist within 5 minutes of starting to run) or, worse, a dreaded bum bag!

I like Nike running capris. Sports direct always have them.

BikeRunSki · 11/01/2014 13:25

Or put your key on a string round your neck!
