Do you buy second hand clothing and/or sell your unwanted clothing?

Hi,
I am in the initially stages of starting up a second hand ladies clothing business and hoping that some of you lovely people would possible answer a couple of questions for me? Will only take a few minutes...
• Do you buy second hand clothing? How often and where from?
• Do you sell your unwanted clothing, donate to charity or chuck in the bin?
I would really appreciate your comments and opinions, any reason you do or don’t would be great to hear!

Thanks
Holly x

Yes. Ebay (only from 2 or 3 sellers I have known for years though) and consignment stores. I might pop into a charity shop in a more well-heeled area of town, but wouldn't normally consider them.

Yes. I Ebayed some maternity clothes, but TBH it's so much faff, I don't know I'd be bothered to do it again. I've sold designer stuff through consignment stores. Other stuff I give to charity.

Yes, from Ebay and local good secondhand/ vintage shops.

I usually take clothes to the local charity shop, but DH always sells his clothes on Ebay. He tends to invest in particular makes/ styles and so is able to easily sell them on.

I sometimes pop into a local vintage clothing shop if there's something on the window which looks interesting but don't find it significantly cheaper than buying new.
I have bought stuff on eBay and am starting to sell things that way but I've also been at a couple of clothes swaps which are brilliant!
A big group of you ( so my work colleagues or slimming group) get together. You bring items of good quality clothing which can be hung up and swapped for something else. They are brilliant - I always get ( and take) loads.

I'm almost tempted to set up a small business running them but most it's for charity (£2/3 to take part and leftover clothes to charity shop).

Good luck with your venture Smile

Yes I buy it from eBay, and sell my old/unwanted stuff there too. If I don't think it will fetch more than a fiver on eBay I take it to Oxfam.

Yep I buy most of my things and DSs on ebay. I've recently gotten a fantastic deal on a topshop coat, zatchels bag, ash spirals and some tokyo jane cuffs. I would not be able to afford most of this stuff were it not for ebay. I live somewhat in the sticks too so it's easier to internet shop than do it in person in the (admittedly slightly crappy) nearest town.

I also sell the odd item on ebay. But with fees and postage it's hard to make much from it. I helped dps mum sell quite a bit of stuff there when her mother passed away last year.

Thanks so much for your comments, I really appreciate it. I currently sell a few items of vintage clothing on Ebay, but have been thinking about trying to expand from vintage to include high street and vintage and get off of Ebay - I worked out that if I sold something for 99p on an auction, by the time Ebay and Paypal take their cut I am left with 16p before I have paid for packaging - I was quite shocked. Have a great weekend x

I buy and sell on ebay, I particularly like to buy on ebay when I am looking for something in particular, like a certain topshop dress or zara necklace that has sold out in store - I've managed to get some really good deals. I have also sold through dress agencies but have found it a bit of faff compared to ebay and they take a much bigger percentage too. Not sure if this information helps or not though!

I buy real vintage second hand from any shop I like really, but for modern or every day clothes I find them cheap enough new in the shops.
I buy all the families clothes new, but used to buy secondhand for dc many years ago as couldn't afford new.

samesizetoes · 11/01/2014 16:23

Underwear, vest tops, swimsuits, socks, leggings, shoes, bras and pjamas I'll always buy new. But, jeans, tops, dresses, coats, jumpers, scarves, hats and bags almost always second hand. Usually from charity shops or ebay/facebook selling pages/freecycle.

If something gets a bit old or I don't want to wear it anymore I put it in my rags pile of fabric and make something else out of it. Even if its to use as stuffing for a new cushion. It's not very often that I'll donate or throw any material in the bin.

Lizzabadger · 11/01/2014 16:44

Buy from charity shop, donate back to charity shop when bored with it (except underwear and swimwear which I buy new).

Jcee · 11/01/2014 16:45

I buy from eBay and charity shops - it tends to be tops, dresses and skirts and usually workwear for me, especially if I can buy brands or labels I wouldn't normally be able to afford new. I buy stuff for DD on eBay too and usually its denim Pinafores, jeans, tops and skirts. I like picking up bundles for DD clothes but you have to search for good deals.

Like same size I wouldn't buy underwear, nightwear, shoes or swimwear 2nd hand and sometimes I find it difficult buying from eBay to make sure it'll fit.

I recycle my clothes when I'm finished with them, I usually send to charity shop and sell the odd item on eBay if it's in great condition and a good label to fund new purchases, but as you say with fees etc it sometimes doesn't seem worth the hassle.
