Do you have a home "uniform"

Montypig · 09/01/2014 19:05

I was reading harpers and queen at the hairdressers today and they were talking about their office "uniform" ( white shirt, black trousers, killer jewels and statement bag) and it made me think.

I really need a home "uniform" - something other than elderly pregnancy t shirts and jeans !

What should it be ? Does anyone do this ?

Erm....jeans and jumper/cardigan...It's not something I planned, it just evolved. Grin

I add shoes and a scarf when going out.

Geckos48 · 09/01/2014 19:08

Pj's

obviouslyneedsupernanny · 09/01/2014 19:10

I wear leggings and a big jumper around the house, with my dressing gown on top always! The dressing gown quickly gets removed if the postman or someone knocks

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 09/01/2014 19:12

Well i dont call it a uniform and it wasnt planned but i seem to always choose the same stuff which is dark blue skinny jeans, vest top and boyfriend type cardigan with either flat leather knee length boots or converse. I only wear a silver locket but when going out i have nice scarves i will throw round my neck as a bit of an accessory.

I tend to wear leggings and a jumper these days. I'll make an effort if I am doing anything though. School run is covered by coats in winter so not too concerned by what is unseen.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 09/01/2014 19:16

I do wear scarves with my coats though. Find them essential. I remove good quality and expensive ones as soon as I return home though. You won't catch me eating tomato soup in a vuitton.

DontmindifIdo · 09/01/2014 19:18

I didn't intend to, but mine is: black, grey or blue skinny jeans, with a plain long sleeved t-shirt or thin jumper, with a floaty scarf (I've got 20 Shock), and black or brown boots.

I've got a few casual dresses and tunics so am making an effort to wear something other than "the uniform" look a couple of times a week.

BunnyLebowski · 09/01/2014 19:19

Erm.

Grey wool thermal leggings, green oversized T-shirt with 'Irish girls do it better' on it and slipper socks.

Comfort trumps style in my house Grin .

Montypig · 09/01/2014 19:45

hummm, so as I feared, the "very elderly jeans covered in mud, oversized ( but not in a good way) pregnancy t shirt ( my eldest child is 6 !) and random fleece" is not, in fact, the forefront of style.............

I like the idea of jeans, t shirt and floaty scarf - this could cover a multitude of sins ( like flying finger food )

I also like the idea that I will buy 6 decent dresses, and 6 pairs of woolly tights and be sorted for every single day of the week ( but with one day of washing in pjs)

Leggings, slouchy old boyfriend jumpers, faded in the wash yoga pants and bare feet: Never answer the door.

I take all make-up off and my bra the minute I walk through the door. Don't think Harpers will be calling to do an 'off duty - at home with DD' feature any time soon.

dontcallmemam · 09/01/2014 20:08

Trackie bottoms with a hole in the crutch, thermal vest & sheepskin slippers. Oh, with old specs when I've taken my lenses out.
My personal style is very important to me.

sawadeeka · 09/01/2014 20:13

I have to get dressed, even at home. But I wear the same thing every day and am tiring of it - jeans+Tshirt+merino or cashmere jumper. In summer, I remove the jumper, and in winter I add a coat. Plus boots or flipflops depending on the weather.
Love the 6 dresses a week idea.

Mrswellyboot · 10/01/2014 00:04

I like back or navy jersey or yoga trousers, fitted tshirt and long cardigan. Fluffy boots or flip flops.

DontmindifIdo · 10/01/2014 08:03

The 6 dresses plan is a good one, although you will need more pairs of tights, or you'll ladder one pair and then throw your whole washing/wearing cycle...

If you do go with the jeans, t-shirt or jumper and floaty scarf combo, decide where you do pattern. My new year's shopping resolution is only to buy clothes that are plain, ideally in nutural colours. I keep buying brightly coloured patterns then not wearing them. I've decided, pattern for scarves only, coats, tops etc should be as plain as possible so I don't have to think about what goes with what after no sleep, although i'm going to try to make an effort to wear some of my colourful non-"jeans and top" clothes so it's not all wasted money. DC2 isn't currently doing sleep though so that's rather limited my ability to think about anything other than "I need a shower, I need clothes that are clean, I probably should brush my teeth."

AmberNectarine · 10/01/2014 08:10

Some variation on a theme of

Jeans - either boyfriend or skinny indigo/mid wash/black
T-shirt - usually crew neck with some sort of graphic design, couple of Kenzo ones the current favourite
Top layer - either cashmere crew or v neck or an American Apparel zip up hoody.
Footwear - mostly high tops, occasionally ankle boots
Coat - either navy Barbour arctic parka, navy pea coat or burgundy Uniqlo down jacket
Jewellery - always a selection of rings, rarely anything else

Rubybrazilianwax · 10/01/2014 08:52

I usually put on an old tracksuit first thing on the days I'm off. I do a bit of cleaning and am fed up of getting clothes ruined by bleach. After thats done I get dressed. I would never get away without someone or other calling at the house.
-jumper dress
-tights or leggings, denim shirt and few nice wide sweatshirts from h&m.
-denim/cord skirt, tights, polar neck

I know the collar under a jumper look is in at the minute but its one I've worn for years and always makes anyone look more dressed. I am always looking out for sleeveless shirts as they are great for a collar and less bulk underneath.
I actually never wear jeans at home, I just never find them as comfortable as a dress.

madmomma · 10/01/2014 13:11

Ooh bare feet dame? Brrrr!
My basic uniform is gap legging jeans and a jersey top from baukjen - either a cowl neck one (big norks) or an extra long t shirt under a cashmere sweater. Wedge ankle boots.

K8Middleton · 10/01/2014 13:18

Pyjamas!

You could try to revive the house coat complete with fluffy slippers? Wink Grin Or maybe invest in some "lounge wear" which is just pyjamas by another name really.

Slipper boots are good for not looking too sloppy but keeping feet warm (look a bit like Uggs), long cardigan and something skinny on legs covers a multitude of sins and is smart enough to answer the door without dying of shame. I don't know why having something on your feet makes an outfit look smarter, even if it is just slippers Confused

glammanana · 10/01/2014 13:38

Although I'm getting on a wee bit I always wear skinny jeans or leggings with ankle boots if going out with a longish jumper/t-shirt over and in the cold weather a big loose scarf around my neck/shoulders always have foundation on and hair in large clip as it is so long and looks a mess if left down I never really change the look unless out to a poshy place with OH.Smile

PurpleSprout · 10/01/2014 15:01

At the earliest possible point in the evening - Jack Wills 'loungewear' and a fluffy cardie. Currently it's shortie pjs, vest and slipper boots. I love my PJs Grin Blush

Weekend / cleaning / DIY days - black or grey trackies and v neck t shirt.

I do dress 'properly' if just about the house or working from home. Today am WFH and in skinny CoH jeans, cashmere sweater, wedge Ugg ankle boots and a zig zag Missoni scarf (but chilly), so am not as total slob, honest. Blush. That said I have many variations on this theme for general casual wear so that's probably a uniform in itself!

Flossiechops · 10/01/2014 15:21

Yyy!!! Nike black joggers, M&S thermal top with a polo neck over and a North Face Gilet and North Face slipper mules (can you tell my house is freeezing!!) Shock

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 10/01/2014 16:11

Leggings and tunic or knitted jumper type dresses. I'm not comfortable when's lobbing in trackies or pj's, I wish I could be I long to lounge on the sofa with a wine coffee and watch mindless tv. I'd love to throw on jeans and a top but I just don't feel me in them. I'm not glamourously or put together by any means but my uniform is tea type dresses cardigan and tights and boots or maybe leggings.

MacaYoniandCheese · 10/01/2014 16:22

Dark blue or black skinny jeans, long sleeve t-shirt (usually stripey) and a long sleeved JCrew cashmere tee on top of that. Some sort of dangly earrings and my beloved tall leather Frye boots (I have 6 pairs in different styles and colours). If it's slushy/snowy/freezing (Canada...it's been -20 this week Angry ) then it's my Sorel boots and Canada Goose Parka otherwise one of my J. crew wool coats.

Montypig · 10/01/2014 18:39

Hmmm, so it feels like I might be onto something with a home uniform - its got to encompass picking up the children from school and the supermarket too - and I was hoping rather for the upgrade of the look from my usual "just fed the pigs " look

dress and scarf shopping I feel !!
