I want something waterproof and practically indestructible for walks n with toddler ds.

So I am thinking wellies (live rurally).

Any recommendations or no no's?

I quite like the look of the joules wellibobs but I've heard things about joules wellies cracking??

And then I think hunter ones seem like a nice shape but then they are £££!

Seasalt ones look nice...

But 40 quid ish for a pair of rubber boots ?! Should I just get cheap ones?

Hunter are rubbish, mine leaked after a few months and I don't even wear them very much! I like the Seasalt shorties.

MissMilbanke · 09/01/2014 10:29

Dunlop are great and believe me I've bought a few wellies !
Do you have a farm supplies shop nearby ?

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 09/01/2014 10:30

I would say Dunlop too
I have hunters but they're old so pre the craply made ones
Dh has town and country? Which have also served him well since his dunlops went 'missing'

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 09/01/2014 10:32

I spent years buying hunters, joules etc and replacing them each year. mine are worn most days due to walking a very active Labrador daily through fields and down by the river. Two years ago I brought cheap £8 ones from asda and they are still going strong. They are black with a white polka dot which isn't ideal but better than the leopard print alternative at the time, the print hasn't faded at all, the soles are barely worn and they are still waterproof.

they have gone up to £13 now but still a bargain. direct.asda.com/george/womens/shoes-boots/daisy-print-wellington-boots/G004465330,default,pd.html other colours/patterns available.

Weelady77 · 09/01/2014 10:36

I bought myself hunters from a website called garden4less I've only got size 4 feet so got them in the kids section for £28, mines are in perfect condition but I only wear them in the rain

Fairylea · 09/01/2014 10:39

Thank you for all the suggestions. The asda ones are nice, especially for the money!

Hmmm... decisions!

I have hunters too and they are the only item of footwear I have ever had that I have not got blisters from and can walk all day in them without my feet hurting. They are expensive though. Perhaps try the asda ones and if no good try something more expensive?

cuttingpicassostoenails · 09/01/2014 11:03

Try a place that does agricultural clothing (Mole Valley Farmers is in Devon but there will be others). I got mine there and they are excellent.

peggyundercrackers · 09/01/2014 11:08

dont get conned into buying posh wellies - they are welly boots not a fashion statement.

MajorMassSpecsMistress · 09/01/2014 11:15

I've given up with wellies all together as I'm fed up of them splitting. I got some leather county boots instead and they are so comfy, totally waterproof and warm. They are more expensive than some wellies (not all, paid about 100 quid for my toggi Berkley boots) but they are paying me back by not being after split 3months wear like my 50 quid tayberry wellies were.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/01/2014 11:29

I've trtied all the nice flowery boots, Joules, Hunters - they all split. Joules don't even split they just leak from the beginning. They replaced loads of mine and they all leaked and I gave up.

Have Dunlops now and have dry feet, had them for years.

ShoeWhore · 09/01/2014 12:02

They're not cheap and definitely not a style statement but muck boots are much warmer than wellies and longer lasting. They're cheaper at our local agricultural shop than I've seen them online.

JustJazz · 09/01/2014 12:17

Muck boots if want warm feet. I have some Hunters which I've had for years (before they were mega expensive), and they've not fallen apart which is a real shame because I can't stand them! If I can, I borrow DH's muck boots as even though they are too big for me, they are infinitely more comfy than my Hunters.

Buzzardbird · 09/01/2014 12:25

I bought some Sainsburys wellies (children's, small feet) and they have been fantastic. So comfortable and we walk over hills a lot in all conditions. My really expensive walking boots have gone into retirement.

FiddleDeeDees · 09/01/2014 13:26

Another vote for Muck boots - I bought a pair after seeing loads of recommendations on MN. They definitely keep your feet warm and dry, and are good in snow and foul weather...only problem is they don't look very glam Sad

lookdeepintotheparka · 09/01/2014 14:39

I have some Rampant Sporting ones which have lasted really well and are actually comfy unlike most I've tried. I can't link but there's some nice polka dot ones in the sale on their website for £12 reduced from £40.

Normally I wouldn't have bought wellies with a 'trendy' label but they were a present from DH and they are still going strong after a lot of use!

SoonToBeSix · 09/01/2014 14:42

What size are you? You can get hunters kids up to a size 5 for £34 my dd is 5"6 and they are long enough.

bellabelly · 09/01/2014 14:42

My lovely Joules ones (from their ebay shop so a bit cheaper) arrived teh other day and they are dead comfy and I love them. Who knows how long they'll last but my cheapy ones from the garden centre only lasted 3 years before springing a leak, hence my lovely new ones.

Link to ebay shop here - free p&p too.

bellabelly · 09/01/2014 14:43

Mine were £25 so only a fiver more than my ugly old ones.

ineedsomeinspiration · 09/01/2014 14:45

I wear my wellies most days in the wet and cold months (so all year really). Hunters only lasted just over a year before they started to leak so not worth the money imo. Gone back to cheap ones and then if they only last six months then I'm not bothered.
Oh had his last pair of dunlops for over ten years till the tread wore on the bottom. They still didn't leak. Now on his second pair which cost a tenner from sports direct.

NewChoos · 09/01/2014 14:47

I have Joules ones, worn twice, think my foot was a bit damp, suspect leaky. Am going to try for 3rd time and return if I feel soggy.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 09/01/2014 14:51

I've got a fab pair of woof wear long yard boots for dog walking, they're magic. Waterproof, cosy and adjustable calves so I can tuck my jeans in. They are about £27 on equestrian clearance. I also have hunters, but only had them for a month or so....

Rooble · 09/01/2014 14:53

Joules ones are rubbish - mine got a random hole in the foot (no reason for it); discoloured; the pretend fasteny bits at the sides came unfixed. Plus wellies are incredibly cold. Had forgotten this as hadn't worn them since childhood. I prefer good solid walking boots/walking trainers.

higgle · 09/01/2014 15:01

I've had my Le Chameaux ones for years, nicely cut too, not big clodhopping things like hunters and with very non slip sole. I do however tend to put on my Joules wellibobs for short dog walks, I'm sure they won't last forever but they are comfy, convenient, look nice and after a year show n signs of failing yet.

TheKitchenWitch · 09/01/2014 15:06

I get mine from a local farm supplies shop, they are bog standard green farming wellies which do not win me any prizes in the fashion stakes but I've never had a pair leak or break.
