Feeling crap

Started this tonight , won't be going back. Really hated it and couldn't keep the rhythm (no rhythm) felt really naff! Couldn't understand the instructor either. Walked out after 15 mins while friend stayed the hour. Feeling a failure!
I don't have masses of weight to lose, just want to tone up and enjoy something whilst seeing physical benefits

Hate the gym, hence this. Did I say I was feeling rubbish?!

It's tricky the first time. Don't give up after just one go! Next time it will be a little easier.

I was shite at dance classes when I first went, after a few weeks I had it sussed and can pick things up fairly quick now.

Skinheadmermaid · 08/01/2014 21:56

What is body combat? Dancing? Urgh sounds awful!
Start a martial art and learn some real combat!

stargirl1701 · 08/01/2014 21:58

I love BC and I'm crap at aerobics type workouts. It's same every week for a few months so you do learn quickly. I would give it 6 weeks before making a decision.

Body Pump is better for toning though.

ZenNudist · 08/01/2014 21:58

Oh I saw your title & actually sighed with sadness I don't get to go to combat any more since having ds (3.4). I loved it.

It is hard to follow the routine at first but believe me I am a mega klutz who can't follow aerobic classes for toffee.

Speak to the instructor and say you are new and can she make an effort to explain the moves and keep up reminding you what's coming up

If its an established class some people will know routine without following instructor. If she's any good she should be able to teach to the newbies as well as the die hards.

It is really good for losing weight & toning up or just general fitness. Don't be put off.

Whatever you decide to do don't be so hard on yourself. You are assuming everyone else is judging you as hard as you judge yourself. They aren't! They're just getting on with their gym thing. Don't worry!

ZenNudist · 08/01/2014 22:00

Second doing combat + pump + balance. Your gym will do all 3 probably. Pump is weights and balance is yoga (ish).

theladylovescupcakes · 08/01/2014 22:04

I do combat twice a week and have been for about 18 months. I found it tricky the first few times, and ached so badly after my first session. I'm totally addicted now though! As someone else said, the routines are usually the same for a few weeks. That said, if it's not for you, then it's not for you. Perhaps give it another go? You'll get on better the next time, I'm sure.

If it helps, I did metafit last night for the first time and didn't enjoy it one bit! Hurts like hell. Grin

TracyK · 08/01/2014 22:08

I did combat for 15 years and loved it, but didn't really lose any weight. Do you have kettlercise near you. I lost a stone really quickly doing that twice a week. I prefer combat for the choreography, but prefer the results from kettles.

Meglet · 08/01/2014 22:13

skinhead body combat is like martial arts set to aerobic routines. i was just trying to explain (badly!) how I was crap at dance but stuck at it and it was ok in the end.

What does annoy me is when instructors have the music too loud to hear what they're saying.

lady No one goes to a class the first time and does it beautifully.

plentyofsoap · 08/01/2014 22:27

I was not keen on this class (I am quite fit) and I have seen a few walk out so do not feel bad. Keep trying different classes. Body attack will make the weight come off Wink

r2d2pink · 09/01/2014 04:39

It depends on your 'problem areas'. If I need to lose a bit of fat, Body Attack is deadly, whips me into shape like nothing else. Best to combine with a class to tone up, e.g. Yoga/pilates/reformer/ barre. Variety is key. Incidentally, rollerblading gave me the best butt I ever had

DrNick · 09/01/2014 06:18

I didn't like. Prefer pump

DrNick · 09/01/2014 06:19

I think it's thd prancing I hated op. You'd prefer pump

Novelsituation · 09/01/2014 06:50

I love combat and it is my most regular form of exercise ( x3) a week. It took a few months to get all the moves right, but is huge fun once you know what you are doing. I like it because it is not as high impact as body attack.
It's good for legs, bum, torso, arms. I've always hated my legs but they are in their best shape ever (possibly still tree trunky by other people's standards). I have no hesitation in wearing sleeveless stuff ( am 44).

Northumberlandlass · 09/01/2014 07:00

I did my first combat class this week too Smile
I actually enjoyed it but think it'll be easier once i've learnt the routines

I find Attack too high impact & it really affects my achilles. Body Pump is amazing though & i've seen such changes in my body shape, maybe try that?

Northumberlandlass · 09/01/2014 07:02

I do balance too & also love it. Amazing core strength!

HazleNutt · 09/01/2014 09:44

you're not a failure just because you didn't like combat. I teach it and I always ask people to try it 3 times, if possible - it is very overwhelming the first time, but we do the same program for several weeks.

But if you don't like it - no problem, your gym must have other classes. What about Bodypump, as already suggested, or pilates, if you don't like jumping around? Spinning, if you want a good cardio workout, but find following the combinations in combat difficult?

WhereIsMyHat · 09/01/2014 11:00

I hate any of the combat, pump type classes. I find spin/ RPM, yoga and Pilates all suit my workout style as I have no rhythm. Body balance is alrigh too. I think what I hate is the 'packs' you get at the pump, balance, combat type classes, I more of a go in, work out and go home.

I tried a class last night which was high intensity interval training, was 30 mins long and left me exhausted but I like it, very little need to dance in time.

DrNick · 09/01/2014 13:37

I'm not a dancer. That's why pump is simple. It's a 1.2.3.4. Beat

LadyofDunedin · 09/01/2014 14:10

Hi all
Thanks do much for replies, made me feel a lot better.

Given how much I disliked it; the tutor, loud music, unclear nature I won't be going back,

A lot probably has to do with my lack of rhythm and the very dance nature of it- which the OP above kindly points out.

I didn't think the teacher was much use to encourage me to continue, and given how rubbish I felt about myself, I think I'll stick to what I know!!

WillPenn · 09/01/2014 16:18

I hate Body Combat. The music is too loud, the instructors all shouty, and all the faux aggression really annoys me - I don't want to imagine punching someone thanks very much. I do have a good sense of rhythm so Zumba and Sh'bam (what an awful name!) suit me much better. Body Attack also ok for me on occasion.

It is just a matter of finding what suits you - I've tried a lot of different classes now and some I love, while others I hate with a passion.

PiperChapman · 09/01/2014 16:37

just find what suits you

I do.cardio combat twice a week and spin three times a week. I'm addicted to spin! I tried a body pump class and hated it because I hate weight type stuff. I'll.persevere though because need to build my strength up - it's all.very well being cardiovascular fit but it needs to be everything else too

HazleNutt · 09/01/2014 16:46

piper does your gym offer Lesmills GRIT classes? Especially Grit strength would be good for you - it's just half an hour, so half the suffering of Bodypump. Grin

DrNick · 09/01/2014 17:56

lol at the grit video
