Do people do clothes interventions as well as bra ones?

IceBeing · 06/01/2014 14:19

I have had the bra intervention already which was fantastic...I am just wondering if anyone wants to help me dress less like a penniless student and more like a grown up woman?

What I am currently wearing at work today:
jeans (possibly straight cut - I am a bit hazey on this)
burgundy long sleeved T-shirt/jumper (£8 from Sburys)
Regatta grey fleece type thing
flat black trainer/shoes with velcro (scummy looking)

I am actually a lecturer and often look substantially less well dressed than the students I am teaching...

I have reasonable financial means....I could buy nicer clothes if I new what the hell I should be getting.

NB: this is my very first foray into S&B and could easily be my last....

Oooh yes I love a nice blazer.
someone upthread linked (I think) to a beautifully cut one from Coast.

I like this one

Redoubtable · 07/01/2014 13:01

some lovely jackets here

There are inventive and competent fashion people around here who would give you excellent advice if you gave them a direction. They're like bloodhounds; all you need to do is give them a scent of what you're after and they'll sort you out!

IntegrateExpectations · 07/01/2014 13:12

I love those academic chic pics.

I like a lot of what Mel Giedroyc wears.

If you have large breasts absolutely do not wear round neck t shirts or polo neck jumpers, they will look nearer to your waist than your chin.

KristinaM · 07/01/2014 14:32

Pinterest - no people can't see your email address.

You can use any name you want .

Warning -it's very addictive

AlternativeMoniker53 · 07/01/2014 14:47

I hear what you're saying OP re the physics sexism. I used to work in an area where I had to tone everything about myself down in order to be taken seriously.

Have you considered visiting Marks and Spencer's? I find it a nice, safe space and the staff are usually very helpful. They also stick plenty of conservative but stylish, rather than fashionable, clothing that is inexpensive and is easy to wash and wear.

I think the smarter jeans (I'd avoid skinnies or jeggings if I were you), a couple of plain cotton, v-necked long sleeved tshirts or light jerseys and a classic blazer would be a good start. I'll have a look on their website. Maybe a low-heeled ankle boot? Safe but more stylish and put-together than your current look.

AlternativeMoniker53 · 07/01/2014 14:52

How about this kind of look? The red might suit you?

Plumpysoft · 07/01/2014 14:59

Step away from the fleece! Agree with the converse, or some suede slouchy suede ankle boots. A house of colour consultation will massively help. X

IceBeing · 07/01/2014 15:04

Thats a good call on mel! Definitely dig her look.

A whole red blazer....hmmm that is going t o take some adjusting too!

right I have pinterest under first name ice second name being. I have only added two things. One is the wrong colour but i love and the other is a would I get away with that?!?

will see if I can add more tonight!

Now this is absolutely perfect!

Scarletohello · 07/01/2014 15:23

I really think a colour/ style analysis would be perfect for you! With your colouring you are probably an Autumn ( so no black!) also with a large bust there are only certain styles that will really flatter your shape ( I'm a 34 G so know what that's like). I had my colours done years ago and it revolutionised my wardrobe. I now wear colours I wouldn't have looked at but they really suit me. Everything in my wardrobe matches and its saved me loads in time and money when I go shopping. And I get loads if compliments on what I wear too..!

IceBeing · 07/01/2014 16:51

right people. Explain shoes to me.

Where do you buy nice shoes from? I realise sburys isn't the answer...but tbh you seem to get the same tat everywhere.

I am quite taken in by the idea of nice smartish ankle boots but I don't want something with a horrid slippery plastic sole or that will wear in 5 days.

I want something I can wear day in day out for at least a few months!

OP posts:
IceBeing · 07/01/2014 16:52

Ha yes you would think I would be autumn...but black suits way better than brown and red better than orange.

I blame my pinky pink face.

In fact at the end of the day my problem with colours is that my face (pink) clashes with my hair (orange).

bleurgh.

A lot of mumsnetters swear by ash jalouse boots. I'd love a pair but they're a bit spendy for me (am trawling ebay for some right now!)
Clarks have quite a good sale on at the moment. Lots of nice looking ankle boots there.

Hobbs, Jones and office are other possibilities.

ShoeWhore · 07/01/2014 17:28

these boots are very similar to ash jalouse enormouse but a fraction of the price. I've got them and wear them constantly.

burnishedsilver · 07/01/2014 18:49

Op, ugly people are very rare. Is highly unlikely that you are ugly. What's more likely is that you are lacking in confidence in your appearance.

An easy place to start would be to pick a non intimadating shop, like m and s, find a manaqiun that you like the look of and try on the whole lot. It's already been put together for you.

IceBeing · 07/01/2014 19:00

okay so if I go to clarks and buy ankle boots then they will last?

does it matter how much I pay? I mean like if they are 50 quid they might last but 20 quid and they wont?

OP posts:
IceBeing · 07/01/2014 19:06

and its okay to wear ankle boots with a shortish skirt?

OP posts:
MadBusLady · 07/01/2014 19:09

Clarks are high quality IME and they have a good sale on. And ankle boots with skirts/short skirts definitely! Though I should warn you this is more - gulp - fashionable than long boots.

MadBusLady · 07/01/2014 19:11

Re: price, I have awkward wide feet and bunions and want to be comfortable and I would definitely not buy £20 boots (unless reduced obvs). I don't think cheap shoes are as good as cheap clothes IYSWIM.

IceBeing · 07/01/2014 19:29

Ah okay. I am leery of wearing knee high boots because I have chunky calves (play badminton) so I don't think it looks too good. Although maybe that is more of a problem with ankle boots argh!

my plan is to find some sort of skirt to wear to work tomorrow, wear my knee high boots(put up with any abuse I get then walk to shops in lunch break and obtain ankle boots from a shoe shop. I will attempt to spend more than 50 quid (unless in sale).

good plan?

OP posts:
IceBeing · 07/01/2014 19:30

mad are you subtly hinting that 50 quid is also not enough to spend on ankle boots?

OP posts:
IceBeing · 07/01/2014 19:31

Or I could wear 'the dress' and not give a crap if people make comments...

OP posts:
MadBusLady · 07/01/2014 19:42

No, no not at all. £50 should be decent (though it's not an exact science). Ankle boots in the Clarks sale, lots under £50 reduced from much higher.

MadBusLady · 07/01/2014 19:43

Can't believe you're having to factor in possibility of sexist comments. Depressing. Sad

ShoeWhore · 07/01/2014 19:44

And quite shocking really. Trying to think of a suitable reposte...
