Help - family photo shoot - tips for not looking fugly please?

Jupiter118 · 05/01/2014 23:00

Horror of horrors - extended family shoot in near future and I need tips for not looking awful. I always seem to end up looking dreadful in photos.

What colour clothes? What to wear generally - think it will be quite casual.
Should I do a semi perm on my hair to cover the grey and make it glossy?
What kind of makeup? (Am not good at makeup anyway..)
Am quite a chubber (size 16) so how best to pose to look as thin as poss? Am starting new year diet tomorrow, but I don't believe in miracles.

All tips very gratefully received? TVM

Do what the Victorian ladies did?? Grin

Would save a fortune on hair and makeup Grin .

But seriously, I would colour your hair, do some pretty daytime makeup and wear something unfussy and flattering. And get the photographer to strategically position the dcs in front of your wobbly bits!

burnishedsilver · 05/01/2014 23:05

Good posture, for the few mins it takes to pose for the picture, really helps. Also, wear a plain colour, not a pattern.

3bunnies · 05/01/2014 23:10

I read somewhere before my wedding to try to stand with arms away from your body so that there is a gap between your elbow and your waist- it is supposed to break up the colour and make you look thinner.

3bunnies · 05/01/2014 23:16

Some tips here or slip the photographer an extra £20 to photoshop the proofs before he shows anyone

Lairyfights · 05/01/2014 23:21

I will only advise on makeup really as that's the bit I feel confident about, and love! Sorry if I go on and say stuff you already know or do!

  • Make sure your foundations/powders and concealers are not HD ones, the white back flash will show up on your face!
  • Lots of mascara, after eye lash curling - works wonders!
  • Stick to a neutral/goldy/bronze eyeliner to rim your top and bottom water line - it will really open your eyes!
  • Highlighting and contouring (even lightly if you're not used to it) will really add dimension to your face. Contour with a bronzer around your temples/chin and jaw/side of nose/from the corner of your lips to bottom of your ear. Highlight with a highlighter your cupids bow, top of cheekbones, under eyebrows, middle of nose. Remember to blend all this in well! Use blush on your cheeks!
  • Eyebrow wax or pluck, or just a general tidy up will also really help!
  • Practice with a neutral smokey eye, a light colour all over the lid and slightly darker in the outside crease will look lovely and not be too bold! Obviously I don't know your skin colour, eye type - so you could have a play with neutral tones.
  • For photos I tend to avoid lipgloss because it can look too gloppy and shiny (for me). I prefer a matte or velvet lipstick, nothing too bright but not paler than your natural lip. Again you'd have to experiment with colours. Lots of lip balm on before!

Also, remember lighting in photos studios will also bring out all your makeup beautifully - so it just needs a helping hand!

Wow I have gone on, sorry, I get a bit over excited when it comes to make up! Bit of a hobby!

EATmum · 05/01/2014 23:28

I've been told to look down not up to the camera. Not sure why?
I also think bold colours work well in photos, but in block rather than pattern. But that might just be me ... I don't photograph well!

Kikithecat · 06/01/2014 07:56

Make sure your eyebrows are shaped (threaded?) and wear a big smile!

Inkspellme · 06/01/2014 08:04

If you can stand slightly sideways and turn your head to the camera. apparently has a slimming and poised effect.

would also second a big smile. It really does make a difference on photos. It will give you an appearance of confidence and being comfortable with yourself even if thats not quite how you feel inside!

The make up advice is fab - some really interesting stuff there.

CalamityKate · 06/01/2014 08:12

EATmum the opposite is true; if you look down into the camera it pretty much guarantees you a double chin. You need to look UP into the camera.

Jupiter118 · 06/01/2014 08:21

Wow thank you keep the tips coming as learning loads.

What is HD makeup please? clueless

Aaarghhh. That could explain a lot Calamity!

Jupiter118 · 06/01/2014 08:22

Oh and Grin at the Victorian ladies link - seems sensible to me Grin

OP posts:
SugarHut · 06/01/2014 08:34

Yes, you need to look up to the camera. No one looks flattering shot from the chin up Grin

You need a plain one colour shirt. White always looks best...unless you are doing a basic portrait, in which case most studio backdrops are white...so check that first. If it is white, then go for either caramel or powder blue (strange yes, but trust me) depending on which suits your complexion more.

Take some photos of yourself smiling on your phone, sometimes your natural smile is not your most photogenic. I'm a model, I knows my stuff, I do Wink and my "prettiest" look for the camera, I feel like I'm virtually gurning!! If you want to inbox me I can tell you in quite ridiculous detail how to stand/sit etc....but you will need to practice lots, otherwise you will look like the staged/posed one whilst everyone else looks relaxed.

Make up wise, heavier eyebrows than usual, and a shit load of mascara, almost too much to wear seriously in RL...your eye makeup needs to be literally 4 times the amount you would wear normally. Don't apply this rule to all make up though, lips and cheeks must not be too rouge at all, even the tiniest amount of over blush can make you look like Mrs Rosey Apples.

Then, there are some obvious things, if you are the chubbiest family member (not mincing words here lol), don't stand directly next to the thinnest. If your face is a little on the long side, don't sit next to someone with a very round face, if you are the palest, don't stand next to the most tanned, where you will both contrast and over emphasise these things.

And always smile, lips open showing a little/lots of teeth, depending on what suits you. Teeth together or the tiniest bit parted. Never "grin" lips together, if that makes sense.

CalamityKate · 06/01/2014 13:55

Anyone who had only ever seen me in photos would think I'm under 5 feet tall; I always bend my knees to ensure the camera is higher than I am :)

CalamityKate · 06/01/2014 13:59

Ooh Sugarhut they're great tips!!

I hate smiling for photos; I am tiny of eye and when I smile, bunchy of cheek which results in me looking like a grinning mole. Imagine a blonde Penfold Hmm

mrsrhodgilbert · 06/01/2014 15:34

We had to have this one years ago as sil won a photo package. The bit of advice that sticks in my mind was to wear long sleeves. I assumed people must hate how their arms looked.

elQuintoConyo · 06/01/2014 15:35

Oh crap, I wrote a lovely post which didn't post (on phone).
Basically said: fabulous info, great tips, I'm adding it to 'threads to watch'.

Oh, and my tip: get everyone else to 'smile' like Chandler Bing Grin

Jupiter118 · 06/01/2014 16:18

Thank you sugarhut and lairyfights. Loving all these tips - need to checklist them all!

I did one with my family a while back and we agreed a main colour to wear. Not all over on everyone but just a theme. It was purple, so dad wore a purple tie, I wore a purple jumper, sister wore a mainly purple dress. It honestly didnt come out looking completely purple (DH wore a black shirt, DB wore a white shirt, children in whatever) but it did mean the final picture looks co-ordinated.

Alternatively all wear jeans and a white shirt, I like that look in portraits.

Agree with practising your smile. My sister is a photographer and she says I have two smiles. One of them I like, one makes me look like I have hamster cheeks!

Jupiter118 · 06/01/2014 23:06

Like the idea of a colour theme, but scared about possibly baring my feet - what a thought... in fact too scary to contemplate...

scripsi · 06/01/2014 23:14

I am going to do this with the DCs as a surprise for DH's birthday. Could you PM me with full details of how to post please SugarHut? I have never taken a good photo so I would be happy to practice posing/gurning!

Robfordscrack · 07/01/2014 04:05

Wear your most flattering neckline. Don't have everything straight on facing the camera. Don't wear matt black - it makes you look tired. Have your hair blow dried beforehand. Also, as an experienced retoucher, I can tell you the first thing I do is whiten up the white part of the eye, and whiten the smile slightly (just subtly, not Simon Cowell fake), soften but not completely remove any lines which makes you focus on the features of the person. (Removing them all would look too j.lo plastic). I do sometimes have requests from friends/relatives who forgot to have their roots done and need me to fix it (in photoshop I mean!).
