Non-frumpy knitwear

Ideas please, S&B! I love knitwear.
It seems many here dislikes cardigans. Are they always frumpy, or do naice flattering cardis exist too? What would the alternative be, only wear jumpers?

Signing in for tips. I am hourglass and its hard to find warm yet flattering clothes.

southeastastra · 05/01/2014 21:20

who dislikes cardigans? what's wrong with them! i love them myself

thisismyYuleTimenickname · 05/01/2014 21:24

I don't know what's wrong with them! I like cardigans! But S&B frequently find them frumpy. I'm an hourglass too and would like some tips! How to be fab AND warm?

I'm an hourglass too and cardigans suit me MUCH better than jumpers! I look terrible in anything but the thinnest v-neck sweaters. Round necks are very definitely frumpy, and I find jumpers need to be tucked in or belted to avoid looking bulky.

IMO, all chunky knits looks frumpy on me. And anything that hits at mid-hip makes me look fat (am 5'8" and a 12-14). Cropped cardigans or longer cardigans or coatigans (hitting below my bottom) look much better.

I have several cashmere polo-necks, which look good with skirts, skinny jeans or even dress pants (i.e. suit trousers).
I also have a couple of thin cashmere v-necks which look good on their own (I wear a thermal v-neck vest underneath, which is not visible, but keeps me warm) or with a thinner, cotton polo neck if the weather is extremely cold. I also have a huge collection of scarves which I wear with the v-necks if it's chilly, to dress them up a bit.

I love cardis.

My non-frumpiest knitwear has been from All Saints, but I refuse to buy any more as it just falls apart.

Financeprincess · 05/01/2014 23:44

I love a cardigan. Banana Republic do the chic-est ones.

Whistles are very good for elegant jumpers in good fabrics.

Karen Millen. Lovely knitwear. Thin knit so very flattering, but still warm, and most of their cardis do up with bright silver poppers or zips, so none look frumpy. Love them, got about 20. Quite short in the body though, so you need to be short torso/long legs body type for them to look like they fit well...my friend borrows mine and they look like they are slightly too small as she has a long body even though she's thinner than me. Great for big boobs too (me: 5ft 4, size 6, 32e).

Thanks vitaminC, helpful post. I think that shorter, thinner v-neck cardis are the most flattering on me.
When I wear bulky and boxy longer jumpers over my curves it's less flattering. Makes total sense of course, but I'm really found of those when it's cold.

It's nice to get shop recs but would be even nicer to get links to items - so I can see what S&B thinks is non-frumpy Grin

My best knitwear items are
hobbs v neck jumper
And cos wool dress
Both plus a good necklace or scarf.

I don't think they're frumpy but not an expert in identifying frump/non frumpy clothes, I just know I like these items!

thisismyYuleTimenickname · 06/01/2014 12:25

Nice jumper!
COS clothes are mostly for very slim/rectangular women aren't they? Or am I wrong.

Well the models are certainly like that, yes but I bought this in a store where I was able to try it on and it works (5ft 0 & size 16 btw). Got a nice top too which looks totally different to the website picture on me with a pair of boobs in it but again, I like it a lot.

Chewbecca I love both of those items. I would buy that grey jumper if it was available in my size!

JeanSeberg · 06/01/2014 16:02

Do you like any of this kind of stuff?

Chewbecca · 06/01/2014 16:28

curioustiger house of fraser have it in 12&14 too?

june1957 · 06/01/2014 16:35

I hate to say it but Boden do nice cardis, as do White Stuff and sometimes The White Company. Or if you have £££ and like cashmere look at Brora.

SugarHut · 06/01/2014 17:20

Wearing this as I type :)

Plus some nice ones both new in, and in the sale. There was a lot more instore the other day, especially sale stuff, than there is listed online for some unknown reason.

Phase 8, Mint Velvet. I agree about jumpers looking chunky if you're not careful.

Phase 8 do gorgeous unstructured jumpers which are thin but warm.

I love knitwear but the cheap stuff is cheap imo.

goodasitgets · 06/01/2014 17:58

I have a (cheap) longer length cardigan with spiked shoulders that I wear with a waist belt. Have found adding a belt helps a lot!

Belindaearl2 · 06/01/2014 21:57

Cos & Jigsaw are good - Navy
