What do you wear to work when it's raining?

Interested to hear what office workers wear when it's pouring rain. I have a longish walk to the station and always get soaked trouser legs/tights. I'm short so don't have any knee-high boots but might need to invest in some.

I don't have a huge walk (maybe two minutes), but if it's pouring I tend to wheel out my black Merrell Wakefield. It is smart for a waterproof. And I try to wear boots on a rainy day.

I tend to wear tights with dress/skirt as tights dry faster than trousers.

I spray all my shoes with waterproofer and wear ankle or long boots + my long warm waterproof hooded coat, originally bought for standing around sports pitches but proving perfect for wet mornings.

I walk 15 mins to work each morning and wear a longish coat and use an umbrella. If it is really chucking it down I wear wellies too and tuck my trouser legs inside- I am past the age where I care what I look like Grin
I wear black polyester type trousers so they take no time to dry once I get to work.

I generally wear skirts and knee-high boots when it's raining. Smart and practical.

Floisme · 04/01/2014 13:05

I walk 30 minutes each way (it's my only exercise!) and this is one of several reasons why I have given up on trousers - bleeding useless in the rain. I wear skirts (I'm into pencil or tubes at the moment) or sometimes dresses with either knee length or ankle boots. Plus a reasonably waterproof coat with a hood (umbrellas are useless too). It's not glamorous but then neither is arriving at work soaking wet.

MakeTeaNotWar · 04/01/2014 13:09

I have a 30 minute walk to and from the track station and a 10 min bike ride at the other end - I wear waterproof trousers over my clothes and a rai coat, dry as a bone when I arrive at the office

LadyIsabellasHollyWreath · 04/01/2014 13:09

Skirts/dresses with knee-length patent leather boots - I change into court shoes at work.

smellylittleorange · 04/01/2014 14:52

Yep give up on trousers here too. I wear wellies and waterproof coat, opaques, dresses/leggings if really cold, my work is smart casual. I also have a backpack I don't think I look terrible but not completely stylish..at least I am warm and dry though. My coat has a removable hood which helps to ensure I am not too casual all of the time

ElizabethBathory · 04/01/2014 15:01

I have a 15 min walk to work so if it's raining heavily I either wear wellies or winter boots (knee high furry walking type ones) and change at work. And yep, trousers are useless, I wear skirts or dresses to work all winter.

nicelyneurotic · 04/01/2014 16:37

Thanks everyone! I think I'll need to take in a second pair of work shoes then and wear with a dress!

Oh no, not what I want to hear. Am about to start an office job with a 10 minute walk each side of the bus. I live in wet west Wales, and work in one of the owns that keep being shown on the news with storm damage at the moment... My trousers and court shoes combo won't stand a chance, will it? Confused

How common is it to walk to work in trainers or more sensible shoes and change into work shoes in the office?

gaggiagirl · 04/01/2014 17:56

I keep a pair of smart shoes in my drawer in the office, spare socks and flip flops too. I trudge to work in my uggs or wellies.

smellylittleorange · 04/01/2014 18:16

I have a whole box of shoes under my desk - black wedges, blue dolly shoes, tan moccasins, black ballet flats and a pair of tan high heel boots in there at present! It is easier in the summer though

kaumana · 04/01/2014 18:50

I agree that trousers and rain do not make a good match. I keep a pair of shoes at work as well.

ElizabethBathory · 04/01/2014 19:10

All the women in my office have several pairs of shoes under their desks, including me! It's very normal. Plus, if it's raining no one cares how stylish you look, they're just trying to get out of the rain. I have some nice leather boots than can take some rain, but when it's pouring Id rather wear wellies or snow boots than get the leather soaked.

JemimaMuddledUp · 04/01/2014 19:22

Excellent, thanks.

I have a steep hill to walk up to get to work too, so flat shoes would be much more sensible to wear to get there.

I think I'll walk there in heels on day 1, then measure up the under desk space for a shoe stash Grin.

AwkwardSquad · 04/01/2014 20:14

I wear sturdy boots and a longish coat, plus scarf, gloves, brolly etc. then change into work shoes when I get to the office. I keep a couple of pairs at the office. I don't wear trousers to work (can't find any that suit me at the mo) so usually only end up with damp knees at the worst! And tights don't take long to dry.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/01/2014 20:15

I keep heels at work, and travel (10 mins walk at either end) in boots and a parka.

Bonsoir · 04/01/2014 20:16

It is fine to wear a smart pair of rubber boots on the journey to work and to change into shoes when you get there.
