I have decided to stop colouring my hair for a while and try something a bit more natural (used to have a block tint, then roots from my hairdresser, Loreal colours). I am just fed up of being on the salon treadmill and feel that the condition of my hair is suffering.

I have light brown/very dark blonde hair, with a hint of reddish undertones. Some grey along my parting and sides, but lots of my hair is still a good colour too. The colour which I am growing out is a very similar, but slightly brighter light brown/dark golden blonde. My hair has some sun-lightening on the ends as well.

These are the products I am thinking of:

aveda conditioner

Henara

logona

a bit riskier - henna

Or possibly Daniel Field Watercolours?

All advice gratefully received - many thanks.

I brought the Avena conditioner for brown hair but changed it for the red hair one as it was to brown... it doesn't so much blend in grey hair more add shine.
have you thought about a colour shampoo instead. . superdrug do colour shampoos which are underrated. .. they are numbered from light to dark as are hair colours.
I use 7.34 warm copper gold and love the shine and warmth it gives me without my hair looking coloured.
dont go any darker than your natural colour, and to start only leave it on max 10 mins then shampoo it out.
please update if you try it as i think this product is fab but not many other people seem to have tried it.

Thanks. I am not near a Superdrug but assume that I can order online? Are they like semi-permanents?

I think that I will try the Aveda first as this is the 'lowest impact'.

I have just had my hair highlighted for the first time after a 10 year break - the white in among the dark blonde was becoming very visible in winter with no sun streaks. It looks great! Maybe try cutting your hair quite short to speed up the growing out process? And then have highlights on your natural colour, rather than a block colour?

marleebrodie · 05/01/2014 14:13

What is the Superdrug product called?

FunInTheSunD · 05/01/2014 16:54

colour effects... wash in wash out...
in a small grey bottle/container.

FunInTheSunD · 05/01/2014 16:56

Branching out... Avena is also the most expensive, have you seen the price... Shock Shock

I really like Phyto Gloss. I've also used the Superdrug Colour Effects which is nice and good value, but the Phyto lasts longer and makes my hair shinier and softer. My hair is dark brown with very subtle highlights (with grey coming through) and it works well whilst conditioning my hair slightly. I use the chocolate, but I suspect the chestnut might work better for you.

FunInTheSunD · 06/01/2014 22:07

I'll definitely give the Phyto Gloss a try... thanks for that tip... Smile Smile

Thanks for the tips - I am not too worried about the cost of the Aveda as it is much cheaper than £70-£80 every 8 weeks for salon colour!

Will also have a look at the Phyto and Superdrug options.

If none of this works then I will probably go for highlights as Bonsoir suggests.

I dye my hair myself and then use Aveda black malva shampoo (and the conditioner which does lay down some colour) to help stop it going brassy and keep the colour richer for longer. It's working for me so far.

Update: I bought the Aveda blonde (chamomile) conditioner and really like it so far. I have not been able to leave it on the hair for longer than a minute or so, but it definitely gives a lovely wash of colour and leaves my hair very light and soft. However, the effects seem to fade if you wash your hair with anything else in the meantime.

Greys - I am not sure that it colours them, but have yet to try leaving it on for longer. However, it does seem to blend them in. Feel it is quite useful if you don't want a chemical product.
