I've been looking at pictures of face contouring on Pinterest. What is the darker contour make up?

Is is darker foundation? The lighter is highligher or concealer?

Oh I have bronzer too but don't want to use it as I think it makes me look mucky.

This thread has made me realise that I may have a bit too much makeup as I appear to be able to assemble the entire kit bar dark foundation without buying anything Grin

ThePigOfHappiness · 31/12/2013 15:46

Yep that's it. I think it was good, though I never use setting powder, I like to look a bit dewy. I use the urban decay setting spray instead

ThePigOfHappiness · 31/12/2013 15:47

P.S. you can never have too much make up!

Curioustiger · 31/12/2013 22:50

Did it. Photos were rubbish with too much glare from bathroom so no real point in me posting. I have to say it looks great, I am really surprised. Embarrassingly I think it looks more subtle than my normal makeup (from watching tutorials I think I previously was not wearing enough foundation and then quite a bright blusher, so it looked a bit harsh on my skin).

It took about eight minutes --let's not talk
about how long it took me to find all the brushes and makeup in my cupboard of shame--. I reckon I could get it down to five after a couple of goes. The only difficult and faffy bit was swapping brushes for blending. I would only do it for special occasions though as while it looks great, I am wearing so much makeup now!

Cocolepew · 31/12/2013 22:54

8 minutes? do you look like a Kardashian now? I'm obsessed with peering at Kims face to check out her foundation.

Sadly no! I did think although the foundation I bought looked dark in the shop, on my skin it wasn't that dark, I think I could get it more cheekbone-y if I practiced (as an FYI it was about five or six shades away from my normal shade... Not enough, should have gone darker).

eshermummy · 31/12/2013 23:26

this has made me very curious so I had a quick look on youtube - I reckon I get the gist of it but I cba to sit through all the tutorials so tell me, did you put your normal foundation on first and then apply the dark one on top or does the dark one go on first before any other colouring products and then normal coloured one to fill in the gaps iyswim?

Curioustiger · 31/12/2013 23:42

This is what I did

  • moisturiser
  • normal foundation
  • light concealer under eyes, down bridge of nose, middle of forehead, lines from corner of mouth to ears (almost)
  • tiny dots of benefit highbeam over the above as didn't think concealer was light enough
  • dark foundation lines down sides of nose, cheekbones, under bottom lip, temples
  • blend it in (that was a bit messy as I didn't change brushes often enough)
  • powder on top
  • more hi beam on eye lids and under eyes
  • blusher on cheekbones

That was it! Not hard but it is TONS of makeup.

The brand sleek do a contouring kit I three different shades. Each comes with a highlighter and contouring powder. Sleek are fairly cheap too.

ijustwantnicehair · 01/01/2014 04:05

But isn't it obvious if people are within three or four feet of you and the lights are on?!?

FergusSingsTheBlues · 01/01/2014 07:48

I used to put a light dab of bourjois in my chin dimple and put a vvv faint stroke of brown eyeliner under my bottom lip.....

But if I put concealer down the length if my nose it makes me look beaky as hell and I've only got a little snout

cardoon · 01/01/2014 10:05

F%&$ tiger are you really a TIGER? Grin

cardoon · 01/01/2014 10:06

ALL THOSE STRIPES Shock

FergusSingsTheBlues · 01/01/2014 10:24

I don't see how it can be convincing tbh

Curioustiger · 01/01/2014 10:38

Did you look at the video I linked to? It looks really natural. It's a leap of faith though when your guests are arriving in fifteen minutes and you're peering at the stripes in the bathroom mirror ready to blend!

cardoon · 01/01/2014 10:53

She does look fabulous

TessTackle · 01/01/2014 10:56

Mua do a contour kit I think.
Very cheap so worth a go for a practice.

AntoinetteCosway · 01/01/2014 11:41

CuriousTiger next time try the contour and light concealer underneath your regular foundation. You'll need a lot less of your normal foundation and it should be easier to blend. Works particularly well this way round with powder/mineral foundations.

AntoinetteCosway · 01/01/2014 11:43

Kevyn Aucoin was the master of this by the way. If you google him you'll find face charts and instructions. He had brilliant books in the 90s. The looks are a bit old fashioned now but the technique is amazing.

Curioustiger · 01/01/2014 11:44

Thanks antoinette will try that and report back.

Curioustiger · 01/01/2014 15:31

Tried it antoinette's way earlier. Still good but I got a more defined look last night, probably because I have liquid foundation as my normal foundation. Was quicker though, five minutes tops once you have all the stuff in front of you.

Curioustiger · 01/01/2014 15:32

I might try it antoinette's way again with powder Foundation as I have that too somewhere...

Cocolepew · 01/01/2014 15:39

contouring for your face shape

OP posts:
scripsi · 01/01/2014 16:01

I would love to do this (am very pale and tired of looking moon-faced on photos!) I would rather use cream/liquid products and I need quite high coverage. What works best? I have estee lauder doublewear as a foundation (though its days are numbered now they have changed the formula) but what could I use for the light and dark contour - would liquid or cream concealers work best (and if so which one would you recommend)?

Cocolepew · 01/01/2014 16:43

Scripsi if you look on Superdrugs website they have the Sleek contour kit for under a tenner. It comes in fair, light and medium you might be able to judge what colours you need from that?
